Some of the whine in the thread from either cheat sympathisers or cheats themselves is amazing. If i was one of the cheats and i'd found out my mods had been removed and i was let off with a wrist slap i'd take a deep breath of relief; not come to the forum crying about how "harsh" it is. This punishment if anything is WAY to soft! Consider yourselves lucky!

Nobody using legit mods gives two hoots about these cheaters losing everything. They got away with it for a year, blasting people to kingdom come and killing off a central character to the universe with cheated rolls. Now FD know who they are so any future cheating by these people will hopefully get their accounts perma banned.

It seems soft but FDev still have a difficult position because they also sat on the cheat after it had been reported for months apparently. The important things are
1) FDev know who they are now
2) The god mods are gone so there's none out there now and that makes a HUGE difference.
TO be honest.... I think that 2 weeks is fair enough.
Let's just get some perspective: There is a lot of information/logs/vids/online statements etc. to trawl through and at the end of the day, this is not a block of flats on fire due to sub-standard, flammable cladding being culpably applied to shave a few quid off the final price and make something less of an eyesore for the rich neighbours... it's just a game. It doesn't demand immediate attention.
The fact is (and I'm quite pleased, actually) is that they waited and watched while the news of the cheat was spread and people who never tried it decided to try the cheat.
After the two week lag, those who weren't actually cheating but learned of it and tried it for themselves are also punished...
THIS IS A GENIUS MOVE by FDEV... They sit quietly and patiently and wait to see which sort of people have the sort of personality who would KNOWINGLY jump on a controversial "exploit" for their own PvP enjoyment...
Then they punish ALL OF THEM.
Even those who were on the fence and just tried it for a laugh.
This will have a far more chilling effect than just punishing the (hard)core members who have been exploiting it since Day Zero. This will dissuade sheep and chancers in the future from keeping known "exploits" to themselves and instead make them more willing to avoid them or report them, or both...

Well.. this turn of events confirms what I imagine everyone thinks. SDC, and other such 'L33t' PVP groups are all cheaters. Why, some of their 'members' may not have ever used such an exploit I hear some people cry! So what. They're cheaters by association.
Hopefully the 'notoriety' these groups have gained will just ebb away into distant history now.

None. Seriously, read the bloody announcement. Nobody is having stuff taken away purely on the basis of having good rolls and never using the exploit.

Easy? No, I personally think that FD handled this correctly, in the end. Losing all modules if one has been exploited is a just punishment. More is not necessary.

All they're doing is reverting the modules.
If it were me, I'd wipe your save. If you complained by submitting a support ticket, i'd shadow ban your account for abusing the support ticket system. Or I'd further screw with you by giving you mods to your modules that make them worse than stock.
Because cheaters deserve the worst response the developers care to make. Whatever that may be, banning etc. Doesn't matter. You are no longer a player worth caring about.

Don't want to dwell on it, let's move on, but the bug was reported a LONG time ago and ignored remember. Players have seen multiple counts of historic inaction.

Actually that's a great point. Anyone NOT pvp'ing with their usual ship will obviously be one of the cheaters. And without their godrolled ship they'll die easily and giving themselves away as a cheater.
Someone should start noting down names perhaps?
Sorry Jenner, I was guilty of doing this, please be aware though that we are just venting, a good number of those that are now known to have cheated have been taunting us, insulting us and making out they are 'better than us' for what seems like an age, and it turns out for a good while they have been cheating. To be honest with you, in my opinion a bit of naming and shaming in this case is probably an apt punishment alongside that handed down by Frontier, some of these guys and gals brought this upon themselves, but I will desist.

This game has an Open mode... By joining that mode, you are GIVING YOUR EXPLICIT PERMISSION to be intercepted/ganked/101mps bump-StationDestroyed/laughed at AND PVPed by other player.
That is Open.
Let me tell you what non consensual PvP is... That is playing in a SPECIFICALLY non PVP group and someone breaks the rules... But no, even then, there is a Mobius disclaimer which states that since it is unofficial, it cannot GUARANTEE someone will not break the rules... So even if you join Mobius, you are giving your EXPLICIT consent to the CHANCE of being ganked.
There is only one true way to engage in non-consensual PvP (eww. this term is so distasteful it literally leaves a bad taste on my keyboard as I type it) and that is if you join Solo and someone, somehow manages to hack your instance and destroy you.... THAT is non-consensual.
Basically...
You are mistaking your preconception of what Open should be with what it actually is.
The fact is it is up to FDEV to make sure that Open is enjoyable for as many people as they can... if they want to... if they don't, you're just going to have to accept the rough with the smooth.
If you live in Open, you die in Open... It's as simple as that.
If you don't like Open, vote with your feet (or thrusters) and stay in PG or Solo.
If enough people stay away, FDEV will (hopefully) get the message and create a proper, realistic, playable and most importantly FUN Open.
But please, don't come here with your safe-space, antiseptic language....

On the record, I want it said that I believe FDEV is one of the fairest and most generous devs as far as looking after their player base goes.... I have, due to my own negligence, left a session running when I though I had quit and come back to a (rather significant) rebuy screen.
A simple ticket request to FDEV and three days later I was reimbursed... It was 99% ( there is possibly a programatic way to tell if someone has gone AFK) my fault... but they managed a charming and personally written email to tell me the good news.
This is why, despite my sometimes caustic appraisal of ED as a game, I am a big fan. Fairness and an egalitarian outlook goes a long way.
I still think it would have been better if they silently modified the modules to have really bad stats (below stock). Their guns could shoot ammo or lasers that regenerate their targets and damage their own ship. etc.
Their ship name could be changed to CHEATER ...and they can't change it until they sell the ship and no cheater modules are equipped.
