Ships The Keelback Club

The only thing Engineered on my Keelback is the lvl 2 MC turrets, which is nice since turreted weapons are normally quite nerfed compared to gimbaled and fixed. Everything else is stock. I'm a PvE-only player at the moment, FYI.

Thanks for the reply!

What do you use it for? General usage? Missions? The salvage stuff I keep hearing about coming eventually sounds interesting.

By MC I assume you mean multi cannons?

I used it for general missions and even cargo hauling back in my early days, but now I use my Diamondback Explorer for non-combat missions due to the excellent jump range. I keep the Keelback for bounty hunting in High Res sites and combat missions. The SLF is what makes the Keelback great IMO, without it the Type-6 built to run away from a fight might actually be preferable.

Quick one for the combat Keelback pilots.

SLF in CZ's how do you keep them alive? Or do you not bother and use them as a limited time weapon system?

I've been messing around in some local CZ's and find the SLF does not stick around for long :(

My own favorite approach is to park my Keelback 15km out and go in with the fighter myself. Of course, once someone turns rails / missiles towards me I usually explode quickly, but it's fun. :)

In general I'd say to distract/destroy enemies with railguns, they're the biggest threat to the fighter by far.

I'm not really using my keelback as a dedicated combat ship but sometimes I go and take it out for a spin in a res. Unless you have a high level fighter pilot you should't really be expecting to much from him. Mostly I use the fighter as a distraction or just to have some added damage.

Then again my Keelback is outfitted to be a multirole support ship. I mainly use it as a salvager/light mission runner. It's just about my main ship as it can just do about everything and once engineered it jumps decent distances.

Yeah once the crew gets to a decent level they can be useful. Not sure how they will survive in a CZ though as they seem to attract a fair bit of attention.... Ah well still bucket loads of fun.

I love my keelback, I've had it since I upgraded from the hauler when I first started out in ED (only a couple of months ago) but I have played constantly, as I fancied a bit of trading and still do - but its mostly for the keeping-under-the-radar missions where I can land on any pad, get those data boom missions and with a Grade 5 FSD (36ly, with materials, I can get 72ly), big sheilds and great manoeuvrability (better than the orca) I can 9/10 get away from interdictions and outrun the pirates (not quite true, i can boost at 350) but my shields have so far held out long enough (without a scratch) for me to scoot away at supercruise onto my destination.

I wont be getting rid of it - even though I own a vulture fully loaded for combat and RES, plus an orca fully loaded for passenger travel and an ASP Explorer fully loaded for exploration (all grade 5 fsd's).

The Kellback has paid for itself many times over, as well as a huge proportion of the other ships that I have purchased and has definitely contributed to great REP and INF.

Its a fun ship - I can haul about 64 spaces of cargo which isn't something to laugh at (especially if its mission cargo), though the fuel scoop is definitely laughable with my setup at a measly 75's though that tank will get me 100+ly on one fill up.

I've not been able to mission stack with any of the other ships, like I do with the keelback. Its rebuy value is next to nothing (in comparison) and I can literally fill up my mission list and just go delivering, picking up or transferring data without breaking a sweat.

Its an AWESOME ship.

I'd thought I'd add my 2 pennies worth to this thread. I've been flying my keelback almost exclusively for the last few months, I believe it's my favourite ship in the game.
It's because it's not the best at anything, but can do everything, and most people hate it. It makes me think on how to do things in game, to compensate for it's shortcomings; you just can't blast away at everything in a hazres but have to choose your targets and time of attack wisely.

So, I use it for combat (PvE of course) and I don't worry about PvP players as I suck at combat so no matter what ship I'm in I'd die anyway.
I use it for missions, general material gathering and exploration.
My exploration version has a 37ly range and everything on board for long term voyages (no fighter bay as I tried exploration with a SLF and didn't get on with it).
It runs very cold; approx 16% heat running in deep space so no need for heat sinks.

The next one I'm building is for PvE piracy, I want to commerce raid local fed and Imperial systems (for RP reasons). I plan on stripping shields with the SLF and use cannons on the KB to module snipe the power plant. Well that's the plan anyway, how well it'll work time will tell.

Finally, I hope one day FDev will bring out the raider paint job for the KB, I think it would look excellent with rusty panels etc.

I've been asking for a raider pack (paint and kit) for the KB since they came out. If there is one ship that is just screaming for them it's the KB!

On the live stream last night, I thought I heard Sandro say one of the things being looked at was the possibility of a multicrew keelback.

Anyone else notice this?

I didn't catch that but I'd love to have multi-crew for the Keelback. I've recently reconfigured mine for mining/bounty hunting. It's been fun flying my Keelback again but I'd really like a better pilot in the SLF.

Not only will the Keelback have an extra seat, my lovely SLF pilot will be sitting in it :D She's getting really tired of being consigned to the cargo bay every trip we go on!

Oh man, don't get my hopes up.

I really hope Frontier goes that direction with Elite, and lets us hire crew that we can *see* and get even more attached to.

But also please give us a way to save them when we inevitably kersplode! It would stink to have crew that you can't take into truly dangerous situations. That's a whole 'nother discussion, though...
