News 2.4 The Return - Response to release date speculation!

I want major new content, but I'd still rather they took a year to flesh out & connect togethet core gameplay elements before doing so.

I also agree.

I want atmospheric planets more than anything, but I have to agree that the best move right now is to expand and improve what already is in the game, even if meaning that things like atmospheric planets and space legs will be put even farther away (assuming they ever come at all).

My ultimate hope is that we will get both, fleshing out of core gameplay as well as a slow release of additional landfall planets-maybe quite barren worlds with trace atmospheres.

Remember that Zac did indicate that other, new stuff would be released in the post 2.4 period, but that the key focus will be core gameplay mechanics.

I'm interested to know how much you'd be prepared to pay towards this one year of ED game development. How about a monthly sub of £10? That's £120 for the year.

I believe atmospheric landings will begin with gas giants - which means at first it is enough to model the atmosphere itself without taking care of the surface that has wind erosion and reflect color variations that stem from the soil's interaction with the gases.

I can't see why we can't get both. The people doing the planetary surface tech are different teams to the people doing gameplay elements. They will need to work together though, but I could actually see basic atmospheric planets or gas giants coming out at a similar time to when the core gameplay updates come out. Of course we would probably need to pay for the gas giants/basic atmospheric planets. The core gameplay updates I believe will be free for people that have the core game and horizons.

Many people want major new content (guilds, atmospheric landings, space legs), not just a year of core-feature improvements.

I want both. Not necessarily a year of core improvements (I don't think FD ever committed to a full year/season of such changes), but I think things like the mission system, BGS, combat zones and Powerplay could be improved a lot with a little love.

I do see there's a bit of risk now. Every time FD engages with the community, there's a risk of disappearing down the rabbit-hole. "Oh, FD is asking for feature feedback. Here's a 100-bullet-point list of must-have changes! I assume everything I want is going to be fixed/changed, now they're focusing on it!".

Look at how a relatively simple feature like ship transfers became a forum war.. I think FD will have to be pretty focused and headstrong in whatever they choose to do in the core feature changes.

£10/month in 2017+? Bargain! I paid that every month for 4 years in the noughties for WoW. I'd pay up to £50/month if it gave me all the stuff we're asking for / dreaming about. It's only money; you can't take it with you.

That particular question was asked years ago and IIRC there was certainly some interest in the £10 a month tier. I would pay that.

Even though I agree that is the most likely, I certainly hope not :D

Gas giants are the least interesting of all the planet types that we can't currently fly in.

And a giant ferocious space-going rabbit breathing fire through its nostrils , swatting those puny fdl's and annies like they was confetti at a barbecue.
The horror,the horror...

If it brought back scooping from gas giants like the original elite, I'd be all for it. Go into a super Jupiter and you just might get your ship crushed.

Gravity up to ~40G. Wind speeds as high as 1,800km/h, and probably much higher. I'm not feeling the 'not interesting' bit! :)

I'm not sure if we'll see that first though - IMO gas giants are a development all to themselves. I'd expect non Earth-like atmospherics next.

Chortle into my morning tea!

I thought it was a enormous star swallowing goat that chases our armadas of ships fleeing through space until we get rescued by eddies in the space time continuum.

Why is this taking so long to come out? In all the previous betas the updates launched as soon as beta ended, like the day after. Why such a delay this time?

I also find it taking a long time. Tomorrow they'll announce the release date of 2.4 So they delayed the release by more than 2 weeks.
