ED and the Oculus Rift Developers Kit 2 (DK2) Discussion Thread

Let me clarify, sorry.

While in your ship, look to right menu, go to FUNCTIONS, then down to 'INTERFACE BRIGHTNESS'.

This is the one I was meaning.

Ok dk2 is awesome.

I do have one issue though. I get some weird highlights around asteroids that come and go. Like purplish stuff. Is this the chromatic aberration that was mentioned earlier?
I have OVR-whatever process turned off in order to get things working, is this the calibration you referred to?

Is that not the "black smear" shadow problem everyone is talking about ?
Wish mine would hurry up, next on the list, knew the cut off would be me.

Huh, dunno. I should snag a screenie to post.
You will be very happy when yr dk2 arrives. It's way better than the other kit.
Plus they'll having it running out of the box by the time yrs arrives I bet. Mould be nice not to have to monkey with processes etc.

holy hell guys.......... I sm going to sound like a screaming fanboy now but....

I got ED working. No idea why, it just worked when this morning it didnt. it must have been me rushing. but cripes.

This is THE best gaming WOW moment I have ever experienced.

You know that notion of building up a tolerence in the rift... that went right out of the window just with pushing 2 hrs solid in there.

everything is so BIG you just do not get a sense of scale on a monitor (and that is coming from someone who games on a 70 inch)

If I was going to be objective (tough i know!) the resolution is still not ideal, with not all text being usable. This should be fixed for CV1 however. Also the FOV is not an issue in this game because you would wear a helmet anyway right?

I love the rift, and this game is certainly going to be one of the all time greats in it. I know I am preaching to the converted here but any one who owns a rift has to get ED.... should everyone with ED buy a rift? I dunno, maybe not, but they should certainly have a go on a friends and then make their own mind up.

PS I have an ok spec PC, with a heavily overclocked GTX 670 but I run ED on low settings. I will wait till my next gpu before i ramp that up.

oh and if you put your stick roughly where your avatar has his, the trackong on it is perfect. so much so when i dropped something off my desk for a couple of seconds i was looking on my cockpit floor for it!!!.

Well mine is a mere 5 km away from me according to tracking service, arrived today at local depot at 11AM.
Phoned UPS and asked if i could come and pick it up, but sadly not as they
only allow that after 1 failed delivery attempt.
Delivery stated as tomorrow 31/7 late afternoon.
He better not drop it if he want to grow old :)
Read the guidelines setting up in ED. Inserted Screw in wall to hang camera on
downloaded and installed latest oculus runtime.
Waiting time is killing me.

It's amazing how often I've heard that the last couple of days. I'm starting to think it's maybe not just hyperbole. ;) Makes me kick myself for not ordering mine in March (and hence have to wait until September / October for it) but you live and learn.

Glad you got it working. :)

has the new 1.1 update messed up the rift settings for anyone else?

edit: nevermind. I restarted and it fixed itself.

Quick off topic question.. I play in the DK2 with a 360 controller. How to I come out of hyperdrive with the controller?

I just got my DK2 and the feeling of playing ED with it reminds me so much of playing early 3dfx voodoo games. We're playing a different kind of game now, and I find myself craving more hardware and a better display. I get what this technology can do now, what it will inevitably become, and I want it *now*.

Even with my gtx670s at the lowest settings, I'm having trouble keeping vsync (presumably because rendering for the rift means rendering twice). If I could only put out more fps and had a higher res rift with greater fov, this would be perfect. They've completely nailed the head tracking and I'm not getting any motion sickness.

My mate bought ED yesterday and the lucky ****** had his DK2 turn up today, WOW WOW WOW was what he text me followed by 'close to tears' ... :D

Thankfully I just got shipping notice and mine will be here tomorrow so I'll let you know tomorrow night on the question of hyperbole ;)

ED is definitely one of the best experiences you can get with the Rift right now. I think a lot of these "wow" moments will continue to be had as more and more users get the Rift -- especially more so as first-time users.

I had that "wow" moment with the DK1, despite its deficiencies. With the DK2, it's still a wonderful experience, but mine was more measured / tempered.

I can only imagine the mindsplosion moment when the mass consumers put on CV1 + ED for the very first time.

The bit that made me go wow is kinda silly, but check out the red grab handles in the upper-left and upper right cockpit. They look so real! :p

Is anyone else not able to get the game working with their DK2 since the new beta started? During the premium beta (when I could only play singleplayer), I tried the DK2 using the Extended Mode trick (disable the services etc) and it worked, but I only got about 5 minutes to try it out, then the new version came out and I've not been able to make it work again...

Same technique tried, disable services, Rift is in Extended Mode, launch game, put into Oculus Rift (headphones) mode, but while the 3D works, it's only a 2D plane I'm looking at, rather than the awesome 3D menu system I had before where I could move my head around and lean in to read text better etc.

The Rift camera doesn't seem to activate either, I have a feeling that's definitely part of it...

Anyone got any idea how to fix this problem? As you can imagine I'm bursting to try the awesomeness of Elite with my DK2 properly...

Damn that's a to hear considering I just upgraded to a GTX 660 and my DK2 is coming soon..

But wouldn't you not want vsync? If you turn vsync off when you're at a point where you can't properly run with it, wont your FPS likely land below 75 refresh rate anyway, and be higher than with it on?

Not really, I have a GTX660 too and I only get ~40 FPS in Rift Mode, so it is much too slow. You need a Highend Card to play ED with Rift.

When you say "so it is much too slow", do you mean "the game is actually unplayable"

Or do you mean, it's playable but not satisfying, or..

Like in what way is it bad? Is it comparable to playing a game at 20fps? I could tolerate that until I got the money..

Oculus Direct Mode for DK2 Planned?

Any plans to support the 0.4 SDK for the DK2? The game is simply mind blowing with the new Oculus development kit 2 but lacks direct support which creates judder and stuttering. Any idea when this support may be deployed?

I think it would be extremely wise for Frontier to implement this as soon as possible, since this will be the only game to fully support the 0.4 SDK. Money can't buy this type of free publicity in the Oculus community. Please support it asap.

They are working on it, SDK 0.4 dropped in their lap just as the current trunk was being completed so it will be a little while until they incorporate it.

So, soon (tm) :D
