ED and the Oculus Rift Developers Kit 2 (DK2) Discussion Thread

wow and here I was about to order the kit.. I imagine this is going to stump sales a lot, I mean if we have to run games at 60+ FPS to not feel drunk in game people are going to have to have super computers to really enjoy it...:S

I remember reading somewhere that Sony were saying (presumably in regards to Morpheus) that games developed for VR would have to lose some graphical whizz-bang but what you gain (VR) is worth the "loss".

You're right though, it is going to be the case for some time that getting the very best VR experience is going to require serious kit - those of us used to going into the graphics settings in games and automatically turning everything up to 11 will maybe have to compromise a bit more.

Yep done that, only thing I've found is if I cancel the OVRService_64.exe it greys out the config and can't see the rift.

Done all that as well. I see the game in the rift but there is no tracking.

yeah.. same as me yesterday morning.

I dunno what I did then different to what I did last night :/

all i can suggest is unplug everything, and plug all back in again starting again. but no idea why that would change anything.

I'll have another tinker tonight, I'm just waiting for that DOH! moment I'll get when the thing I'm doing wrong suddely becomes obvious.

you wont HAVE to VR at the native res of the panel. even at 1080p you will still enjoy the reducing of the SDE.

same with refresh rate, I didnt feel at all sick after 2 hrs last night gaming at somewhere around 70-75fps (total guess)

just remember, VR does have a performance hit. I can game on a monitor with my rig on full bubble in VR on high detail its horrible, I have to drop to low settings. its still worth it.

I am hoping when ED support direct to rift I can push it a bit. extending the desktop does seem to be inefficient

So how big a difference in FPS do you get between monitor and VR? And on what graphics card?

I have a 4gb GTX680 and I would have hoped that it could run higher resolutions (or twice 1920x1080) without trouble.

Thanks!

A quick question (with a long setup) for those of you with AMD 7950s/Nvidia 780s:

What are your framerates? I'm running an AMD 7950/i5 3570k@4.5Ghz/16GB and these are mine from some simple analysis:

Using the waste disposal combat scenario and switching between LOW, MED and HIGH graphics presets:

LOW: ~69fps
MED: ~58fp
HIGH: ~44fps

while parked at a station (sat on the pad, not in the hanger):

LOW: ~65
MED: ~50
HIGH: ~40

Obviously I get more or less than that depending on what I'm looking at, but those are about the average (I used fraps benchmarking function).

I won't bore you with even more numbers, but I will say that there's a fairly consistent 40%-50% drop in framerate between what I see during normal play with vsync off and what I see in the rift - e.g 130fps in the asteroids in normal rendering mode equates to 69fps when in rift mode.

Anyway, can anyone with at 780 give me some similar figures? I'm tempted to upgrade, but only if I can hit the magic 75ps pretty consistently in the asteroid fields/stations as that appears to be where the framerate dives (I get more than enough FPS everywhere else)

Additionally, anyone with a 7950 seeing wildly better results? I know stereoscopic rendering takes a lot more power, but I wasn't aware it was a factor of two.

Done all that as well. I see the game in the rift but there is no tracking. the OR demos I.e desk and tuscany both work fine.

Have you got a webcam? Try disconnect all non-essential USB devices.
It has been known to cause conflicts.

Give me a buzz when you are in front of your PC...
No reason it shouldn't be working perfectly...
Lack of head tracking usually means you haven't killed the two processes properly or in the correct order.
The config app should grey out ... That's normal
Don't panic, its likely something simple...
If not, you can give your DK2 to me so I can play couch knights with the missus! :p

Thanks!

2gb GTX 670 overclocked... I reckon VR has a (estimate as FR does not show up in rift) at least 30% hit on FPS. Add that on top of it being less forgiving in terms of how you actually notice framerate in VR.....

No webcam.

I've got a t-flight hotas and KB&M aonf a Bt Dongle. I'll disconnect everything and see if that helps.

Funny thing is it all worked before I upgrated the Firmware. and as I say the Desk and Tuscany demos both work fine.

Computers......:rolleyes::D

Lol I will be able to get on it this evening at some point. if not sounds like counch knights with the mrs might be on the cards. :D

Ain't dat de truth?!

Not sure if it will make any difference for you, but I couldn't get it to work for a while, even though I was following SlackR's instructions meticulously. I started tinkering, as you do, and eventually it 'Just Worked' after I set the Rift orientation back to landscape in the nvidia settings. What do?! :S

Once I got it working, that was the end of my night... In spite of a few minor issues which should go away once direct mode is integrated, I had a complete blast for about three or four hours until I had to force myself to go to bed... :D

Hyperbole? My ass-trolabe! This is incredible...

Hrm 30%? :( so about 40fps in stations and 70fps in space then with VR for me, if I am lucky :(

I can just about read the text in commodities and missions (DK1). Setting the res to 1080p in the options menu made a huge difference if you have not done that yet

Yeah I've also forced aa to max outside the game using nvidia control panel. Just not worth straining over the commodities. Hopefully they'll put a simple rift toggle in like starcitizen has instead of having to go through the menu.

@TJ - don't know if this will help (probably not if Tuscany is fine for you), but with the DK1, some of my USB ports made the unit flakey. Might be worth trying others, especially some at the back of your machine (ie, direct motherboard ports).

@Technotica/Mad Mike - I think I read somewhere that Rift VR had a ~40% hit at the same res as non-VR. I also read that nVidia have some of their mathematician boffins trying to do something clever in their drivers to reduce this by some margin.

Has anyone got Low Persistence working in Elite yet?

I read on the OVR forums if you turn off shadows, AA and set everything low it'll be working in LP mode.

I have an R9 290X, FX8350 Black (4.1Ghz x 8) and 16Gb fast ram.

I've been playing on full everything and putting up with the stuttering, I just figured it was how it was and didn't bother trying to get it better. I could tolerate it no problem, I had a DK1 for a year so I can tolerate anything pretty much, but I'd much sooner it was low persistence.

not sure what settings are on or off but...

playing in "low" in elite it certainly felt low persistence. there was no blurring

Also (not sure is relevant but ........)for instance, the helix coaster made me feel rough right away.... elite didnt even after 2 hrs play (I had 1 woozy moment when i borked docking but it passed quickl

frame rate does tank a bit inside stations.

As long as it's refreshing at 75Hz you should be in low persistence mode. The stuttering you're seeing is likely being caused by your framerate getting low enough that the timewarp stuff can't compensate or it (seems to me that as long as you can get to about 70fps, timewarp can keep things smooth)

Use fraps to get min/max/avg and make sure you're getting 75fps across the board. If you aren't, you're going to get unavoidable stutter as you miss frames.

I played for 3-3.5 hours last night in full stutter mode and was absolutely fine. Stations seemed no worse or better than just regular play. I know my rig is pretty good by today's standards as I only built it 6 months ago and everything I got then was the best you could get.

I expect it'll perform quite well. I'l drop everything to LOW or OFF and then work my way up to a level that is as good as it can be. I'll do this while docked so the hardest area is my benchmark.

Or possibly an asteroid field in Combat Scenarios.

if you check back a page or two, I've done just that and posted average FPS results. Amusingly, sitting on a landing pad seems to kill my framerate more than the combat scenario asteroid fields.

on a decent rig with a 7950, at LOW settings, I struggle to get out into the 70s when in a station or asteroid field.
