The disappointment of Elite is the frequently missed opportunities to exploit its potential. Ever since the development forums sprang into life, there've been a plethora of ideas of what features and playstyles would move the space genre on from what we had in FFE. But it seems the FDev preferred to concentrate on the look of the game rather than its content. And, in that at least, they've succeeded spectacularly - ED is beautiful, and the sound design is equally brilliant.
ED's use of the meta environment provided by enthusiasts is also, in my opinion, one of the game's strengths. Had FD attempted to provide that infrastructure, the workload would have ensured the game would have been stuck in Alpha in the same way Star Citizen is. They couldn't have anticipated that the community would put so much work in, but it's to their and the community's credit that they have, and that that work enhances the game so much. Although it took some time for FD to realise that...
Other than planetary landings, however, there's been little development in the game's basic play mechanics since 1.0. Yes, you can - with the community's help - find interesting Easter eggs in the galaxy, and you can spend time (out of game) studying and decoding these puzzles, but they rarely lead anywhere. There often just isn't enough to engage the player and make them feel at least a little relevant to in-game events. Someone else put it very well in another thread; it's all very well making the player feel small in a big galaxy, but if you make them feel unnecessary and unwanted, they'll go elsewhere. And, despite the positive messages coming out of FCon, I do feel that the momentum sustaining ED is slackening and previously-committed people are looking elsewhere.
Yes, of course it's OK to put down a game and try other things (get outside occasionally - or is that heresy to a gamer..?!), but, like EVE, Second Life, or even The Sims, this game is, or has the potential to be, the only game needed for so many of us. It's something of a small tragedy that its potential is being squandered.
