Elite Dangerous is the Largest Empty Sandbox Ever Made

Most games get dull after a few years, I only ever managed 45 minutes of EVE.

Even the most repetitive games like Battlefield keep me playing now for more than 12 (!) years as every round is different. New players, new skills. PUBG is one of the best games on PC at the moment. Thrilling, unexpected things due to real player interaction etc. With a 5 to 10 year roadmap and Elite being out now for 3 years, the basic game still did not change onr inch nor did FDev manage to make the dull repetition in any way interesting by integrating a story or at least something meaningful the player can follow with his gameplay. The implementation of the Thargoids is not more than a new ship class with new skins and a few shiny light effect. That could be *any* new ship they brought into the game.

I'm absolutely convinced that the underlying game mechanics got planned and implemented in such a terrible way, that the entire game got stuck to the gameplay that the game offered from minute 1. Terrible.

Maybe he wasn't talking about the Power Players when he said griefer? Why does every PvPer feel addressed when someone complains about griefers and gankers?

Mainly because a (rather weak) argument has been made to justify "griefing" as "emergent gameplay"? ;)

You know, "dog-eat-dog", "natural selection", take your pick of cliche here

I am playing Total War, Mount & Blade, Jagged Alliance and many other games for many years and they don't even have any player interaction.

The game isn't changing on a basic level because they are stuck in a corner with their terrible multiplayer implementation.

For the same reason everyone runs into the thread flailing their fists the moment someone mentions 'carebear'

Well if NPCs are hard I can understand why you would opt out of player interaction in ED. Hows the gimbaled docking computer btw?

I was talking about the networking side, not the ad eternam Open vs Solo. Nice of you to think of me as a lesser player out of a single phrase I wrote though.

I actually also played Counter-Strike for 10 years in various leagues and ladders. Our team was quite successful. I would probably be better at PvP than most of you if I would be interested in it.

Frankly i think FD saccrificed too much in their quest to make ED MP. dont get me wrong, i do enjoy playing in a wing with friends, but it is changed the game considerably from what it could have been, and I reckon it is only because of people "cheating" in the MP game that FD are terrified to allow our machines to store any content . Imagine the more indepth stuff we could have if our personal saves could store specific faction data of small tribes we help set up colonies on a planet, or the relations we could build with npcs etc.

but FD do not trust our machines for this stuff because you cant allow players machines that kind of control in a MP game, and it is not really feasible to store all that data server side not to mention time acceleration to see the amazing Milkyway sim in all its glory.

what is my point? some here seem to make out that those in solo are having it all their own way, when the truth is actually far far from it.

Yes, you like PvP. WE GET IT.

Christ, change the record already, it's becoming tedious.

Yeah, I think so too, MP came at too high a cost. That's why I'm waiting for the single-player spinoff (I want to believe) with real gameplay. I got a LTP anyway, so I'll continue to follow the game and what David "The Vision" Braben has in store for us with ED.

I had a follow up point to make and I'm determined to make it :)

So, here's a thought. When you want more players in Open to have fun, you would prefer them to choose to be in Open and discover they can have fun. I am assuming that you know quite a few people who also subscribe to the sentiment above. So why not promote that? Have an event where you set up exactly what you described above and invite players to join. Have players who are new to this be paired with players who know what they're doing and let them experience what you consider to be great fun. Now not everyone will take to it and they will go back to solo/pg and play as they're used to, but maybe a lot of players take to it and your numbers will grow.

Plus it creates awareness in a positive way. Instead of forcing, you're luring. Treat it as selling a product and having people have a taste. If it catches on, word to mouth will insure more inflow and a desire for more of these events.

I like it and have tried such stuff in the past but the problem I see is that (you as someone who doesn't really do group gameplay) it's these groups (you can spot them, you're usually arguing against their desire for a space station or some such) that for them winning is everything. Its not about the journey, having experiences like trying to blag your way past a FDL pilot while in an adder during an onionhead smuggling CG, it's about the win. That's the payoff. Particularly when it gets faction vs. faction. Not one of these groups would be willing to sacrifice a chance at a victory, regardless of how hollow it would be.

I'd rep you if I wasn't waiting for the cooldown for that bolded part alone. :) We agree on this completely- it's NOT about the "destination", it's about the journey- the experiences!

I quit PvP after years of playing because the "experiences" I was having with others all turned into "meta this, min/max that" and "endgame" discussions, rather than engaging and having stories to share with each other.
