Elite Dangerous is the Largest Empty Sandbox Ever Made

I have left elite dangerous on the shelf for now and have gone back to Star Trek Online and I have even gotten a life time sub for sto because with all the bugs that sto has there is more to do and I am haveing more fun playing Star Trek Online than Elite Dangerous right now.
And mind you I am the founder of the Earth Defense Fleet.
Frontier Development has to rethink there development priorities and they have to do it NOW. This game NEEDS Squadrons soon rather than later it NEEDS GROUP GAMEPLAY NOW. To be quite honest I will more than likely not play elite dangerous at all in 2018 if Squadrons are coming out at the end of the year and if they don’t add depth to Squadrons I can see myself not bothering to spend any time in elite dangerous. And I truly love the game but for me there is nothing to do in the game as of now or in the near future.

without depth in the other aspects, whats squadrons good for? people hardly play in wings because there is nothing proper to do for them. Give people buildable stations and actively joining a faction and economy and they are busy with their own made faction working properly together for a common goal. But this all has no meaning now, so it doesn't make people play in groups. Yes, this game seriously needs things people need to work together for. And PP could be such a thing, thats why it needs an overhaul like many other core features.

Hypothetically speaking. If we only had the Multiplayer part of the game restricted to Open play. People trading to make an impact vs others would most definitely be on the list. The problem is; right now there are two reasons only to go after traders. #1 if you're in competition at a CG taking part in a Fed or Imp side. Stopping their progress. Or BGS/Powerplay wars.

But as you can see all that gets negated by the game modes. So any forms of stopping someones progression is just labelled as "griefing" which is the most thing I have ever came across playing a game....

I could have picked a number of posts to reply to, but this one will do.

Here's the thing I don't understand: my group just came out of a 3 months war with a Federation player group. Battles took place in PvP and PvE both, using all aspects of the game, mechanics that work for PvE specifically, as well as murder patrols.

The vast majority of that activity took place in Open. Even if we knew we were both out there, instancing meant that some days we would meet, other days, we passed each other in the night in parallel universes.

But it was probably for both of our groups one of the most memorable time. BGS results at the tick, constant patrols, fights where we found each other. This was literally months of emergent gameplay, stretching our groups efforts and capabilities, and rapidly learning even new techniques. A spectacular time.

None of this required "open only" to be enforced to be fun. None of this required player-owned assets beyond the factions we already support.

What it does require is two or more opponents that want to fight such wars and aim to win.

Oh, to be clear... while there was a bit of BGS forum fighting, that was just a drop in the ocean of the actual BGS work and fights. The actual fight was so much in the game and not on the forums (let alone Galnet) that you probably didn't even know it happened...

The 3 modes x 3 platforms are not an issue. At all. They don't stop meaningful game play. At all. In fact, they allow everybody to participate in such BGS wars, rather than make it exclusive to just one mode. A PvP only group will always lose to a BGS group, even if we exclusively play in Open.

I'm quite sure they "glean" the feedback, but that doesn't mean they make all their decisions based on Reddit feedback. Grain of salt, and all that.

Not all of it. And reddit is not that bad. No different than it is here. They just allow cusswords. People still taking the jabs at people.

The only difference is between here and reddit is there are MUCH MUCH more people advocating for OPEN play and the Multiplayer Experience than there is here. I hardly ever see anyone arguing and dropping walls of text like jocky does.

Reddit also has LOTS more people participating in conversations like this one. And mostly everyone agrees.

When you step back and look at it. These forums are the minority unless they ask for Direct feedback. And even ED, BrettC and others post things to reddit too. Like the update this morning.

Here its the same repetitive people especially when the open solo and private thing comes up. On reddit, there are new people I dont recognize all the time speaking up about it.

Trust me Frontier sees it too.

I have an idea why don’t the devs download Star Trek Online and see how a very cool Fleet system works I mean it free to download and free to play what could it hurt to get a different perspective.

Like I pointed out elsewhere, noted Elite Dangerous author Drew Wagar came it his senses on this topic. So there is hope for the rest of you.

Interesting that Drew has also uninstalled Elite and moved on to bigger and better things.
Having thought about it I don't think you can have the opportunity for storytelling and emergent content (in open) and have the same story in (private/solo). I fear the modes are mutually exclusive.
In hindsight (a wonderful thing) perhaps we should have had only 'open' mode from the start. However, I would have been 100% against that at the time and would have voted thus with my Kickstarter backing.
Changed my mind in the interim.
Has no one told Drew about a small bit of emergent content that happened a few years ago in a private mode? It was easily missed, just 1300 CMDRs making an epic 3 month journey across the galaxy.

He is right in ine thing though, it could not have happened in Open. Too many players who will travel many lightyears to ruin another player's experience.

And it's quite apparent, after the copious amounts of time you've spent on the forums, Reddit, YouTube, and everywhere else repeating yourself- you likely never will.

You mean like all those times I stream and teach the game. And have pretty decent numbers for a niche game? Okay. I guess you're right.

I havnt been streaming lately though. Got some things IRL I am taking care of as well as some stuff in colonia. When I have the time.

Again, Keep generalizing without knowing anything. Its a great thing here isint it?

Ah, so you think FDev doesn't listen to player feedback and makes their decisions based on metrics?

Intersting.

So this is one big charade?: https://forums.frontier.co.uk/forumdisplay.php/234-Beyond-Series-Focused-Feedback

And what Sandro and Ed have been saying on the live streams is a ruse?

Nope I think FDEV pay lip service to PVP whilst rightly treating it as mostly irrelevant, ever since CQC went down so badly demonstrating PVP specific content was a waste of time and effort.

Going by this thread we have open/PVP proponents
Solehunter
Eve4eva
JasonBarron

And probably others I've missed, who all say they no longer play the game. Why create content for a player who has already left that would also not be of interest for the majority of players. Far more sensible to concentrate on what the core customers are doing, which FDEV know through the metrics.

That would certainly explain why there's been no shift whatsoever on FDEV's modes/BGS stance since prior to launch.

Well both here and reddit you got Pecisk damage-controlling endlessly.

I never said Reddit was "useless", just that the voting up/down system as a determination for "metrics" is quite flawed.

I'm sure there's quite a bit of useful feedback- but I also know that, like any other venue, feedback needs to be sifted through a filter.

You know, for all your "jabs" at Jockey79 and his "walls of text", you really need to see his motivation. He's only ever been trying to improve this game and the attitudes of the community.

He really does get a lot of flak from people- and he doesn't deserve that. None of us really do. We love the game, we want to see it improve- but not at the expense of everyone else who plays it.

That's where a lot of these "arguments" end up failing... and why some "can't see the problem".

Ive been a part of some of that stuff myself. Wish the side we were fighting against had the balls to come into open. Im glad to see you had a good experience.

The only real experience I had was when Drew Wager showed us what this game could really be on a daily basis.

Man there were commanders from 17 erandni to Sol. You couldnt jump to a system without seeing someone there. It was awesome!

We had two sides battling it out. Twitch and Youtubes numbers were out of control. I gave away 3 copies of the game that day. New people joined got all excited. Some of them even ask why we dont have events like this anymore. Or why powerplay and the BGS wont allow it. And these are NEW players. It could be better.

What hes saying with those walls of text, is that the game wont change. It wont get better and he wants to keep those aspects the same.

it cant stay the same. Its not only hurting the community. Its hurting the game.

Wrong. He's not saying "the game won't change".

He's setting expectations and reminding everyone of how all of it started, where it's gone from there- and where it's most likely to go from here.

You're making a false assumption- perhaps you should ask him, instead of judging him.

Oh dont worry he follows me around like crazy. Weve been through it. He directly said its not going to change.
