Hypothetically speaking. If we only had the Multiplayer part of the game restricted to Open play. People trading to make an impact vs others would most definitely be on the list. The problem is; right now there are two reasons only to go after traders. #1 if you're in competition at a CG taking part in a Fed or Imp side. Stopping their progress. Or BGS/Powerplay wars.
But as you can see all that gets negated by the game modes. So any forms of stopping someones progression is just labelled as "griefing" which is the most thing I have ever came across playing a game....
I could have picked a number of posts to reply to, but this one will do.
Here's the thing I don't understand: my group just came out of a 3 months war with a Federation player group. Battles took place in PvP and PvE both, using all aspects of the game, mechanics that work for PvE specifically, as well as murder patrols.
The vast majority of that activity took place in Open. Even if we knew we were both out there, instancing meant that some days we would meet, other days, we passed each other in the night in parallel universes.
But it was probably for both of our groups one of the most memorable time. BGS results at the tick, constant patrols, fights where we found each other. This was literally months of emergent gameplay, stretching our groups efforts and capabilities, and rapidly learning even new techniques. A spectacular time.
None of this required "open only" to be enforced to be fun. None of this required player-owned assets beyond the factions we already support.
What it
does require is two or more opponents that
want to fight such wars and aim to win.
Oh, to be clear... while there was a bit of BGS forum fighting, that was just a drop in the ocean of the actual BGS work and fights. The actual fight was so much in the game and
not on the forums (let alone Galnet) that you probably didn't even know it happened...
The 3 modes x 3 platforms are not an issue. At all. They don't stop meaningful game play. At all. In fact, they allow
everybody to participate in such BGS wars, rather than make it exclusive to just one mode. A PvP only group will always lose to a BGS group,
even if we exclusively play in Open.
