Some PvP players are not interested in PvP against other PvP players. Only PvE players. Easy targets. Not all PvP players though. I'd like to think the majority of the PvP guys are open to fight anything. But some are only interested in being spoilers. Bit like spawn campers, every fps game has its share of base campers. ED is no different in that respect.
I dont think flagging griefers is a good idea. What grieves one person is fine by another. The whole grief thing is subjective.
Theres little point in my building PvP ships to go after them imo. Their PvP engineered builds are beyond what may be easily achieved by most of us. Theyre probably in god rolled meta ships. Built during the engineer exploit. Theres little chance of equality in combat. Unless they nerf the god rolls to the max level and remove all secondaries. That is doubtful to happen. The PvP game has moved out of reach of all but the most determined possibly. I get bored just collecting mats. I havent the time or dedication to build something and I know I cannot G5 to the level available during the exploit. Plus Im not great at space combat. Im an fps guy who always plays infantry. Personally I think engineers drove a wedge through the game. But thats only my opinion and not necessarily the case.
I just play PvE PG group. Open is dead for me as I know I cannot compete on a level playing field. Thus I just dont bother. I dont mind being blown up as long as I think I have a chance, but its no fun if theres zero chance. The fun is one way in that respect.
If I am honest, then I think the game has moved away from my expectations and Im just tentatively hanging on just in case. Maybe I should just retire the game and enjoy the memories. In fact now Ive said it out loud....
Most PVP players want meaningful PVP, which we truely hoped we would get with power play ( F ).
However, you are right in that one mains griefer is another mans freedom fighter. So apply a griefer badge would be near impossible.
You are also right how it is pointless to try and kill an engineered ship that doesn't want to die, its virtually impossible.
You are also right in how engineering stabbed this game through the heart. Not only did it make balancing PVP a nightmare and kill off certain types of ships from being viable in PVP.
It gave an advantage to either the lucky or the grindy.
I have rolled about 120 legit DD5 rolls, the best I have achieved is 139. Which is pretty good, but the difference between that and a 142 is about another 10m/s.
I know people who have gotten god rolled 142 drives on a handful of legit rolls, vs the most common achievable over roll being around 135. That's 25m/s faster on an FDL.
Where you are wrong, is about the exploit god rolled ships. Anyone who had used that exploit, lost everything relating to that exploit. So that is no longer an issue.
The number of players who had access to this exploit, were a really really small minority. As it was kept super secret, among a very small number of groups.
You are not alone in your view in the state of the game.
To make the changes needed to fix PVP for example would be so massive and would impact PVE that i just don't think FDEV has the minerals to do it.
Even on the PVE side now, for them to balance the economy and actually make it a grind to be come a billionaire again. Because everyone is now so used to making a billion in day, it is going to be met with a lot of opposition.
I posted in another thread how the best thing for the game would be for FDEV to fix it and then do a galaxy wipe and start again.
Everyone equal and back in sidewinders. I would love for that to happen.
Back when being in a stock viper, made you a dangerous player.
Even before engineering, when you had to decide did you want rail guns or life support.
