Will you ditch the Python for the Chieftain

I wont be ditching anything..... Since I don't own a Python....., but I WILL own a Chieftain for sure ! :D

The Chief has nothing to do with the Python, completely different ship types if the stream is anything to go by. I'll be buying a Chief, I might even learn how to fight this time.

Not for the first time I'm wishing for a real alternative to the Python.

It's not that it's too good, it's just that it has no competition. Rather than nerfing the Python, we really need another ship or two that is every bit as capable.

For example the T7 should fit on a medium pad and carry more cargo than the Python.

It's a bit like having only Volkswagen producing a Golf-class car, whilst every other car manufacturer sticks to super minis, SUVs and wheelbarrows. So, come on FDEV, get your finger out!

This!
The T7 and the Clipper both need to fit the medium size pad and then people will have more choice of mid size ships.

I just got my first Clipper, and I agree, it needs its wings "clipped". I was exiting the mailslot when an Asp came in the opposite side, and next thing I know I'm going backwards! I'm sure you can picture why. Got a trespassing fine for that and lost a ring of shields in the process. I actually like this ship a lot, but Frontier making both it and the T7 just slightly too large for a medium pad for no go reason just seems dumb, especially when there are large pad equivalents to both ships.

This ship seems like a souped up FAS to me? I don’t get comparisons to the FGS or the Python myself, but yeah this may very well compare very favorably to the FAS.

Sorry Mengy, C5 FSD. Not a big jump range, no numbers given.

The ship on the stream had just under 20Ly range with a full weapons load out and a stock 5A FSD.

I'm not willing to write this one's jump range off just yet. Going to take the god rolled 5A out of my Python (+56% over spec) and stick it in this ship on day one of the beta, first thing, and then we will know what it can ultimately do.

Few players ever manage to get a higher over spec than 56. Whatever that max range is... Subtract about 7-10 Ly off for a more typical just under 50% G5 FSD max range upgrade. Which I also assume will be the new Max FSD Optimized Mass spec with the new Engineer changes. No more +50% option.

Nope, Papule Pua'a will remain my go-to mid-sized armed trader/ferry.

On the plus side... all the credits and effort I've sunk into a top of the line combat FAS, can be simply swapped over to the Chieftain, and I won't have to debase myself by flying a Fed ship. Down with the federation!

Curious to know what folks thoughts are now after seeing the ship on the live stream. :p

I haven't watched the show yet either, but from everything I am reading here, the term "Home Run" seems to be coming up quite a bit. ;)

As far as the Chieftain goes... Give it a few more Optional Internals and I think you will have a universal HIT on your hands. :)

I won't be ditching anything because I like to collect all the ships. But I can see myself flying the Chieftan a lot. It does look great.

Class 6 distro. There it is. It’s an alternative to FAS, but not really due to the single class 3 hardpoint.

I’m sure it’ll be a fun ride. Keep your Python and FGS folks.

No, it really is a super-agile, fixed-weapon dogfighter. But it has enough slots for exploration gear and multi-purpose stuff, and the range is better than I expected. It seems you can go to about 35-40LY stripped I guess.

Large hardpoint at the back, not sure how that’s going to go with fixed weapons. Need to actually fly it to understand the hardpoint configuration. Class 6 distro tho; it’s no gunship or Python.

The three military slots are restricting if you want to use it for anything other than military application, such as exploration or a general hauler .... unless the ability to hull/ module tank with modules overcomes the need to have a shield generator ?

Was it ever not going to be a fighting ship? This is like complaining “why isn’t this brand new Coastguard Cutter a very good passenger vessel?”

Well that’s because it’s designed more for the role it’s designed for. Not for something else. Sorry. We get fighting ships for a bit. That’s frontier’s focus right now. Quarter 4 might be more interesting for that.

Whoa ! That's not a complaint, and I was asking a question. Perhaps you would do me a favor and answer it ?

Okay, I've watched the stream now, my thoughts on the Chieftain:

Welp, it's a straight up combat only ship. For such an awesome looking ship I was hoping for something a bit more.

The jump range is slightly below average which is good for a combat ship but disappointing for explorers who were hoping to use it. Speed and agility look excellent. The ship looks and sounds amazing, fantastic job there. The internals however are less than emotion stirring. 2x5, 1x4, 2x2, plus 3 military slots, so it's set up to be comparable to the FGS. In fact it is basically an FGS but with smaller internals, less firepower, and no SLF bay. Faster though, and probably more agile too. Maybe calling it an oversized Vulture would be more applicable?

So yeah, the Chieftain is the Alliance version of the Federal Gunship but lesser and not rank locked. Which is nice for the combat players as it provides more options for them, but it's nothing at all like the Python competitor a lot of players were hoping for. It's not like the Python at all really, in fact the Chieftains cargo capacity is quite small: 88 tons if you fill it with cargo racks and forego shields or anything else. It has the cargo capacity of the small sized Cobra MkIV but with far less internal flexibility. At five usable internals it is one shy of being useful for deep space exploration. I feel like it's a very limited ship honestly, designed for one thing only: combat.

I'll buy one and try it out as it looks fun to fly, but it's limited scope makes me frown. On the silver lining side, that's two combat ships added in a row: T10 and Chieftain, so maybe there is hope for the Krait to be something more than just a combat ship? Maybe the Krait can be a Python competitor? Lets hope so, as non combat players like getting new ships too!

Actually, what jump range does a combat Conda have?

The Chieftan, according to someone else, is 19ly. If we compare that to the Conda, we might be able to see if the Cheiftan could turn out to be a decent explorer too.

Nope. I will not ditch my Python for the Chief.

I probably will never buy a Chief because, imho its main engine placement is strange. Its just not a nice design compared to a Python; or many other of our ships. The Krait is the only ship that looks interesting to me atm.
