ED and the Oculus Rift Developers Kit 2 (DK2) Discussion Thread

Maybe aready known..

After i closed all 3 oculus proc in the task manager and starting ED i noticed the left lens being blurry.
I've read that it had to do with the ipd so i started the oculus confi and service again (while still in game)

Everything still worked well and the blurry vision was gone.
Later i got a crash because i started the msi gaming app but i could still start ED with the 2 processes running with everything working smooth.

This is interesting. For the last two nights I've had the annoying sensation that the left eye is blurry (to the point where I've been taking the thing apart to clean it over and over to make sure there's nothing on the inside of the lens.

I'll give this a go tonight.

Out of interest, are your IPD measurements significantly different to the standard 64mm? Mine always come out closer to 65mm than 64mm whenever I use the configuration.

Yep I have a 2500K with a GTX670 and I have the same fps issue in my DK1 at 1080p. At 1280x800, low settings, it is 60fps.
However, in non oculus mode I get 60fps locked at 1080p, high settings.

I have the same issue but have a brand new i7-4770K and 780Ti

I think it is just down to this build compared to the last one

Oh well, there goes that theory. I guess it is not related to HT then after all! I give up trying to figure it out.

Oooh my order has been checked out for shipping and my cc billed, seems like my double bluff post yesterday (I think in another thread) saying I doubt I will see anything before September worked! cough...

Will update once i have seen it has shipped and when it arrives.

Me too, I think it is an optimisation issue that should, hopefully be fixed at some point. To be honest I don't really notice it in game so not too concerned at this stage.

Wow, this batch is really creeping down the list. I don't suppose Oculus have said anything about the unit figures over time? I'm wondering if the ED list above is representative of DK2 sales in general and therefore my initial "August" due date will actually be August, despite being ordered months later. It's clear at least from the tracking in this thread that there was a massive spike initially (as you'd expect), but it seems to drop off very quickly.

Happy dance time :)

I have a question about performance: I bought a gaming laptop just to play elite dangerous. It has an i7-4700HQ CPU, 24GB of RAM, and a nVidia gtx780M gpu with 4GB of video RAM. It runs windows 8.1 64bit with the latest stable nVidia drivers.

Should this computer be able to get the game to 75FPS? I'm saying this because no matter how low I set the graphic options I cannot get over 45FPS when I'm in the hangar (which for some strange reason seems to be one of the toughest places to render). And that's when I'm using the laptop's screen. When I use the rift, it barely gets to 30. When I'm out of the hangar things get a bit better, but still not good enough to play with the rift without things going blurry any time I move my head, which gets old very quickly.

I really would love to be able to get to 75FPS. I don't mind lower quality graphics if I can fully enjoy the rift. I think the immersion more than makes up for the lack of extra graphics effects (also, I haven't really played that many games in the last few years, so the lowest settings on ED still look good enough for me)

Does anybody know if it can be accomplished?

Thanks in advance.

I have this same graphics card in my laptop ... I think we will need to wait until they optimise things and allow us to use the direct to rift function before we will know for sure. But I'm struggling with a 780 ti to get the desired frame rates at the moment!

Elite + Rift = Yes

Hey everyone, just wanted to say what a pleasure it is to have had a glimpse of the Matrix by experiencing Elite Dangerous through even my trusty old Oculus Rift DK1! (Eagerly awaiting the arrival of my DK2, and Elite is what I'm most looking forward to).

Since backing the Rift kickstarter I've tried a whole lot of VR games/demos etc, and only in Elite have I spent several hours at a sitting. So captivating in so many ways, as I'm sure many others here would agree.

Thank you to the Frontier devs and everyone involved, this is an outstanding thing you're creating. Easily my favorite VR experience so far, and I'm sure it will only improve. :) Here's hoping you allocate a good portion of developer time to Oculus improvements - you guys are in a great position to be right at the forefront of VR gaming as it emerges, I don't doubt that for a minute - this is such a perfect match for VR and you've made a great start. Keep it up!

RE:Judder

I'm giving up on fixing this, definitely not hardware related. Some of us get it, and even then not all the time. You can reduce settings as much as possible and this sorts it for some people. But according to this I'm just better of waiting (can't play anything else since experiencing Elite in VR)

Apparently the juddering (with head turning I'm assuming?) is a problem with the Oculus drivers
To quote TiLT on the OculsVR forums:
Re: How I removed judder from almost all DK2 applications[1]
The judder most people are talking about when this topic is broached is caused by a bug in the drivers for the Oculus Rift itself. You can't fix it. Stop trying.
Just wait until Oculus provides us with updated drivers. All this fiddling around won't fix the main judder issue. It'll only help if you're suffering from very specific and niche problems, while all of us suffer from the driver bug.
Oculus has been very clear that this is a bug that they've fixed internally but haven't released yet. That's why I'm so amazed to see people "fixing" the problem over and over and over again in all kinds of different ways. If you're seeing a solution that isn't "I updated my Rift drivers", odds are it won't work for you.
Also, link to Chris Taylor's Twitter talking about this HERE[2]
Our driver guys are working on judder issues and already have the problem fixed.

Happy dance time :)

Rendering 2x960x1080 is more intensive than 1x1920x1080, it's always going to be slower. Depending on the engine there'll be a certain amount of per-camera processing that goes on that needs to be duplicated for each eye, on top of the raw pixel shader operations. Not that I'm a gfx engine programmer, but my limited knowledge tells me that's true.

It's rendering higher than 960x1080 per eye as well, as 1920x1080 is the resolution target after the application of the barrell distortion. The larger the FOV, the larger the pre-distorted image needs to be.

I think it's more like 1150x1300 per eye in terms of what ED has to render.

It's not because of the pixel count, or that our hardware isn't enough. The SDK has issues on some software combinations (not even hardware)

For those wanting to experiment...

Disclaimer... 2 and 3 ... Only for those who know what they are doing...or don't care :p

1. Playclaw 5 has a great FPS that can be moved... This means you can monitor your FPS on screen inside the rift - very handy to see what graphics options are making a difference.

2. Super sampling / down sampling ... This improves clarity of text by a noticeable difference, but smashes the frame-rate ( for me it went down by 20 fps ) 2560 x 1440

3. SMAA injector
http://www.reddit.com/r/oculus/comments/2cq406/playing_ed_do_yourself_a_favor_disable_fxaa_and/

Disabling AA and using this hack supposedly gives a decent AA effect without the GPU demands. I am using it, but am unsure how effective it is regarding FPS performance. It does the AA job tho.

Just having fun playing around with settings until a proper fix is patched :) in stations are where most of the problems are, which is where I do all my testing.

i7 4770 k OC'd
GTX 780 ti
FPS 75

sorted :)

Can you post full instructions of what do do, from scratch? My DK2 should be arriving this week, hopefully.

Step 1: Buy i7 4770
Step 2: overclock it
Step 3: Buy GTX 780Ti
Step 4: Cry because you still have to mess with stuff to get decent fps
etc...

:)

PS I have the same spec so am anticipating being able to skip stages 1-3 and go straight to 4
