ED and the Oculus Rift Developers Kit 2 (DK2) Discussion Thread

Had some interesting results with the down sampling... Res seems much clearer but there's a weird blurring effect as my head transitions...

I ran into an issue with my GTX 880M on Windows 8.1 (Asus G750JZ) that is preventing full screen from working (with or without DK2). It runs fine in windowed mode but Oculus mode enforces full screen. Once this occurs, you have to kill the task to get out of it.

If anyone else is running into this issue, I found a work around.

1. Run Elite with Intel GPU and configure Oculus mode and any necessary graphics changes.

2. Save and exit the game.

3. Edit the graphics settings xml file in /appdata/user/local/frontier... and change the full screen tag to "false".

4. Save and relaunch the game using NVidia GPU.

5. (Optional) - Disable laptop display so DK2 is only display active

Make sure you make and graphic settings changes while using the Intel GPU. Any changes to them while running NVidia will result in the same black screen issue.

That being said, the GTX 880m only averages about 50 FPS during most gameplay. The only time I have been able to hold a steady 75 FPS is the Sidewinder faceoff single player training stage. That hasn't stopped me from playing for hours on end though :)

So I think after much discussion with other users, the reason for the massive FPS drop I am seeing (to recap, 35fps at 1080p on a DK1, whilst sitting on pad in station) may be down to my 2500k only having 4 physical cores and no HT (Hyper Threading).

It is unusual for games to make use of HT, which is why there is virtually no difference between 2500k vs 2600k or greater in 99.9% of games, when they are clocked at the same speed, however in the case of Elite, this seems to break that trend.

It seems that most other users who are also experiencing this kind of performance are also on 2500K CPU's or similar CPU's that do not offer Hyper Threading.

It looks like having 2 threads per physical core (so 4x2 = 8 threads in total) is making a MASSIVE difference to performance in Elite Dangerous, espeically when using a DK1 and around stations in particular.

Anyone who can back up this theory by testing (ie disabling HT on their CPU)?

Maybe aready known..

After i closed all 3 oculus proc in the task manager and starting ED i noticed the left lens being blurry.
I've read that it had to do with the ipd so i started the oculus confi and service again (while still in game)

Everything still worked well and the blurry vision was gone.
Later i got a crash because i started the msi gaming app but i could still start ED with the 2 processes running with everything working smooth.

Yep I have a 2500K with a GTX670 and I have the same fps issue in my DK1 at 1080p. At 1280x800, low settings, it is 60fps.
However, in non oculus mode I get 60fps locked at 1080p, high settings.

I'm sorry to ask, but I just can't read all the 161 pages of this thread for the info. Perhaps someone would be patient enough to answer a couple of questions for me:

I am currently getting my DK2 to work in the game by terminating the processes etc, as earlier outlined, but it still seems somewhat blurry (outside the cockpit) and jerky. I get the feeling that it needs to be adjusted i.e. config utility and whatnot.

Do we have any idea when ED will be patching us so that the DK2 works with the utility, (sorry I know it's a bad question) or will they be installing some settings to enable us to tune the ipd etc in game?

thanks :)

I have the same issue but have a brand new i7-4770K and 780Ti

I think it is just down to this build compared to the last one

RE:Core usage

I've not disabled HT, but I can tell you when I start Elite all 8 cores go to 30...40% usage atm so appears well designed in that aspect.
i7 4770K

Apparently there are issues with the SDK that need to be resolved with Oculus before E: D can fully support it. They're on the case, and it'll happen when it happens... we just have to wait.

In the meantime, if you have it working, you might want to try the supersampling trick to see if that makes things less blurry for you.

Make sure aero is disabled and set graphics to low... (Shadows is particularly draining)

make sure you have allot of headroom on your gpu if you want to try down sampling. Trying to render ED at 1440p downsampled to 1080p in rift mode ripped my GTX770 a new one.

That is a good guide on how to do it.

I tried this today at 2560 ... The clarity was improved but moving my head was like moving through a very thin liquid... Like the refresh rate couldn't quite keep up. I overclocked the GPU and ( tried to ) overclock the rift, but didn't notice a difference... So back to 1920

Received email just under 2 hours ago (at 14:05 PDT) saying my card was billed; my status is now Processing. Looks like I just missed out in the previous batch with my order date/time.

I upgraded from a GTX570 to a 770 4gb Phantom last night... still get judder unless I put everything on low. Has it been confirmed its a software issue? Seeing as the SDK is broken atm I'm leaning towards that.

I have a question about performance: I bought a gaming laptop just to play elite dangerous. It has an i7-4700HQ CPU, 24GB of RAM, and a nVidia gtx780M gpu with 4GB of video RAM. It runs windows 8.1 64bit with the latest stable nVidia drivers.

Should this computer be able to get the game to 75FPS? I'm saying this because no matter how low I set the graphic options I cannot get over 45FPS when I'm in the hangar (which for some strange reason seems to be one of the toughest places to render). And that's when I'm using the laptop's screen. When I use the rift, it barely gets to 30. When I'm out of the hangar things get a bit better, but still not good enough to play with the rift without things going blurry any time I move my head, which gets old very quickly.

I really would love to be able to get to 75FPS. I don't mind lower quality graphics if I can fully enjoy the rift. I think the immersion more than makes up for the lack of extra graphics effects (also, I haven't really played that many games in the last few years, so the lowest settings on ED still look good enough for me)

Does anybody know if it can be accomplished?

Thanks in advance.
