Is there an air embolism and/or bends mechanic?

Isn't the game not a total open world though? And that you do have some sort of limited progression and path you need to take with some variation? I always think I want to get it and then never remember why I don't, but thinking it's not as open world as I was hoping it would be?

Nah. It's not really a simulator.
Sounds like you guys are having a blast but "scrambling for the surface" is a really bad idea!
Rather surprised to see this game come up so many times in the "what blatant ripoff would you like to see" thread.
Makes me curious indeed.
What thread again?
As for scrambling, well, the game doesn't overcomplicate things. With a simple rebreather, you have unlimited depth you can function in. You may just as well say that nothing made just of titanium-lithium alloy would ever hold shape on the surface, let alone in a depth of 1.7km.
A submarine made of just 9kg of this stuff can do that, here. And you don't make enameled glass by melting normal glass and teeth.
It's a game
(And really good one)
It's open, but you won't be able to go everywhere from the get-go, at least if you are playing on Survival mode. You'll need to tech up and such before venturing into the deeper/more dangerous areas.
Just picked it up. If i don't like it i'll blame everyone here!![]()
Oh ok, that's a bit better then. Sounds similar to some other games where you need to unlock zones and then eventually it's all open world. Though I'm assuming if you have to beef up before you get to the other areas that once you are, there will be a lot of areas that would just be too easy after awhile?
Needed to find some silver... spent 30 minutes looking, still didn't find. Obviously didn't pray hard enough to RNGesus![]()
Ok, you guys got lucky. Played for a couple of hours last night and enjoyed it.
Reminds me a bit of ED in some ways. Needed to find some silver... spent 30 minutes looking, still didn't find. Obviously didn't pray hard enough to RNGesus![]()
Yeah, checked a few of those, didn't get. Will look more tonight. Dang, this is taking away from my ED time!
Can we have a moment of silence for my first Seamoth, Nemo? It heroically sacrificed itself to save me from a Reaper Leviathan I didn't realize was there, while building one of my Ring Two Sensor bases. 400 meters down.
Had a very tense few minutes after scrambling inside, listening to that thing first tear apart poor Nemo, then thrash itself against the sensor base itself, power provided by the single fish I brought to start up the power. Then I powered up the sensors to discover there were three of them, and I was near the bottom of crater. Debated on whether to swim for the surface first or make a beeline for the nearest sensor base.
I decided on the latter.
Turns out my spacing is just close enough to get there on a single heavy duty tank of air.

Much like Elite: Dangerous, one of my assumptions in Subnautica is that I'm not playing in real time. Instead, I'm playing the interesting portions of my Survivor's day. As realistic as it may be to deal with decompression sickness, to have crafting and base building take a long time, and to dal with lack of sleep, IMO it really doesn't add all that much to a game
It's why I don't enjoy many "hardcore" survival games, but enjoy "lite" Survival games like Subnautica. I'm quite happy to have some aspects of "life" abstracted out, especially when other aspects of the game seem to be compressed in time and space.
OTOH, the main reason I play Hardcore in games like these is because of situations like I listed above. Not having the ability to save and reload means I have to think about things, such how to get out of the mess I was in before I starved, died of thirst, ran out of power, or got eaten.![]()
Sure, I'm being facetious.
I'm playing Elite after all.
(Immersion joke, Subnautica...)
