Am I the only one hyped about that Guardian Plasma Charger and Gauss Cannon?

I'm only hyped if they add more ways to interact with the Thargoids. This is purely combat content. Speaking of combat, Frontier must add a way for us to defeat or push back the Thargoids from a system. I'm still waiting for combat around stations.

I dread the new content because it just means riding the merry go round back and fourth to get it and engineer it. Yawn, yawn, yawn!

I want to know how they differ from the plasma acc. and railgun since theyre both pretty much the same thing. More damage to xenos?

If Plasma Charger is anti-xeno weapon, definitely more damage to Thargoids than ordinary PA.
As for Gauss Cannon, your guess is good as mine. We don't know what that weapon is but I suspect it's not anti-xeno.

Might be a computer disruptor?

The Gauss, is the cgs unit of measurement of magnetic flux density (or "magnetic induction"). (Named after "Prince of Mathematicians", Carl Friedrich Gauss).

One Gauss is defined as one maxwell per square centimeter. (The cgs system has been superseded by the International System).

Possible. However, Gauss weapons, aka coil guns, used in a number of games and movies uses magnetic induction to propel a projectile at high velocicty just like a rail fun

game wise, we currently have

hitscan weapons, full automatic, single shot, burst and constant beam.
projectile weapons that have a spin up time (multicannons C1-C3)
projectile weapons that are full-automatic and no spinup (cannon, PA)
Projectile weapons that re semi-automatic (frags, and soon shock-cannon)

a "hold trigger down and auto-release after X seconds" hitscan weapon (Railgun)
a launcher that fires dumbfire missiles
a launcher that needs a lock-on-target to fire homing missiels or torpedos
a launcher that fires semi-automatic and the projectile explodes when the trigger is released (FLAK)
a launcher that drops proximity triggered mines.

the thing we currently do not have:
a weapon system that charges up and fires when you release the trigger - which i guess will be the plasma charger there. (oohhh, i loved the "Fusion" cannon in Descent!)
-> the "charge" can be either energy (fusion cannon) or ammo based (Unreal Tournament Eightball)

another thing that we don't have:
something like the ASMD shock rifle, that has two fire modes and a third "skill based" combo for huge AoE

Agreed, great post. But you forgot the visually guided missiles, as seen in Starlancer and equally fun in Earthsiege 2. I'd kill for some of those in Elite

i was a fan of the "guided" missile in Descent and Unreal Tournament too.
but somehow i doubt i would like it in elite, unless used by gunners.

but what i forget, was the combination of seeker missile with the flak mechnic.
i remember outfitting bombers in Freespace 1 and 2 with "Synapse" and "Piranha" missles, to defend myself against swarms of fighters.
those been slow missiles that would explode and fire a swarm of smaller seeker missiles when you hit the trigger again.

could be nice against thargons.

I'd prefer all those new modern weapons over some gun powder powered projectile any time.
After all, we're in 34th century :)
But don't mind having some old school guns too.

Miniaturization will make any weapon OP! As will Hyper-Focused Beam (50% more base beam damage that through wonky math works out to a lot more than that), Achilles Targeting Computer (ignore armor entirely), and Structural Analyzer (double all damage that penetrates shields); pair with Phasing Cloak and Time Warp Facilitator for sheer invincibility.

Crap, maybe mentioning Moo2's (quite flawed) design will give Fdev bad ideas....

Gauss Cannon?

Hehe, feels like good old MechWarrior II.
Huge gun, insane power draw, very slow firing rate - but darn fast projectile, very long Range and did seriously big holes :)

All that's still needed is a Neutron Blaster and an Ion Cannon then xD

Can I haz ER-PPC, please! [heart] Oh... wait! (Wanders off to buy plasma accelerator.)

Is that stuff in any way relevant to the game as a whole, or is it just another fragmentation like AX weapons for yet more separate game-within-game?

unlike the AX weapons, the guardian stuff can be used against everything.
they did implement synthesis for it right away, but no engineering.

I'm not sure the guardian stuff is working properly then. I was dual plasma chargers the other day, versus a Dangerous Cobra III NPC, and it took six full charge shots (12 total) to bring his shields down. I'm not sure my aim is that bad, so I'm wondering if something's up.

Was extremely hyped for tech brokers.

then I found out they are just another Mat grind.

Not only am I not hyped now. I will never use them. Ever. Because I refuse to partake of ANOTHER grind. Engineering killed my interest in this game for months. I have no plans to repeat that or a similarly terrible experience with these things. No thanks, game would be better off without this sort of garbage.

what else did you expect from the tech broker?
that you log in, pay a few millions space credits to unlock everything? someone not eploiting money faucets would call it grind
that you have to run a few missions to unlock each module? again, someone may experience that as an endless grind because it has to be done for every module again.

there is only one thing i dislike about those brokers - and thats the fact that you have to unlock fixed/gimbal/turret version of the weapon individually,
and those weapons are by default engineered, so no way to personalise them :(

Yes. I did expect to use credits. Because thats they way it work, if fdev had any respect for our time. But they dont. As usual.
