I've once posted this as a reply to a different post, but thought I'd add it here officially.
I haven't gotten to play it much because of how sparsely populated the lobbies are, but I'm a big fan of CQC and believe it's got a lot more potential than people give it credit for.
Without going too much into it, I believe a lot of people who play Elite Dangerous enjoy the level of immersion the game has to offer. That being said, I also believe that access to the Arena should be a Context Menu option while docked inside space stations.
I've put a lot of thought into this, so pardon me as I go into this incredibly detailed logic/lore RP to explain the concept.
[RP] "CQC is a Simulated Combat Training Program where CMDRs face head to head, without consequence of death or debt.
Honing your combat skills in the Simulation Program is beneficial to improving as an efficient combat pilot, without risking thousands of credits, your ship, and your life.
All ships manufactured and currently in service are outfitted with AR glass canopies for heads up display and to take full advantage of this, CQC allows you to control your simulated vessel using your current ship controls, from the comfort of your own vessel's cockpit.
The Canopy glass displays the simulated visuals from within the CQC Combat vessel in real time as if it were actually happening, all whilst being safely docked at station.
Pilots should note that all actual ship functions are disabled during CQC to ensure safety of the Commander and Inhabitants of the station, and all ship controls will instead control the simulated CQC vessel until the CMDR ends the simulation."[/RP]
This model would not only appease the Role Players by keeping immersion intact and not hiding a feature of the game behind the Fourth Wall, but also make the feature more accessible to most Commanders, who already spend a good amount of time inside Starports.
I think this could significantly boost CQC participation. Say you had an hour to burn at station waiting for a ship to transfer; Perfect excuse for a handful of CQC matches.
Another interesting feature of CQC could be that by participating, you could gain Naval Rank with the Super Power associated with that station, either Empire or Federation, because you would be proving your worth in combat by showing dedication to (simulated) training.
Furthermore, CQC rank could reward commanders with a combat bond/bounty voucher multiplier dependent on rank or K/D, or even unlock higher priority/ paying combat missions with local factions, with them now being cognitive of your value as a combat pilot.
Thoughts? Ideas? Suggestions?
