honestly i have put more hrs into thes 2 games in the last 12 months than in most of my other games apart from elite dangerous. ;)

as for the DDF, there was some collaboration with a very small set of backers but the vast majority of it was on FD....

I'd actually play my old Speccy 48k games LOL

I meant that in general, those type of games are in the past and wouldn't cut it today - back then they were cutting edge of course.

i know i was just pulling your leg mate and trying to inject a big of banter. (and if i am 100% honest, it was a comedy fail as neither of those were speccy ports)

joking aside, and all seriousness.

this is a bit of a tough time for ED imo, but FD will get through it.

on one hand FD have admitted they need to work on the foundation of the game to get the core working right before they can build on it... however this needs to be free, folk wont pay for it so i imagine this limits exactly how much will be done to it.

on the other hand the DLC whch was meant to last for around a year is now in its 3rd year and some folk are quite understandably getting a bit antsy wanting a new pemium update with one of the big ticket items teased by the devs at the start as future updates..... esp those who spleunked £120 on the LTP at the same time that others were paying £30 , and as of right now both have received exactly the same content.

imo being glass half full the storm will pass and i hope 12 months from now we are all diving into an entire new chapter of the game and there will never be as big a gap again as this one.

Only from a poor developer (and there are far too many of these in the developer pool).

Well I was being a tad hyperbolic, but in any complex piece of code, making "a small change" to one section can more than happily cause untold levels of woe, and not particularly where expected.

But yes there is something to be said for being structurally poor enough that you cause far more chaos all over the place than you should...particularly if you're a dunghead at defining/utilising objects, rely on goto statements, or (in unmanaged languages) have the memory allocation skills of a goldfish.

The situation is not hopeless. I'm a Software Engineer working on a project that includes code going back to 1985 (really!). Much of the early code was written before good coding practices were developed.

Slowly, we are improving and refactoring that crufty old code. The first thing to do is to carefully isolate the code, so that it can be unit-tested. We use GTest. Then algorithms and modules can be refactored, without breaking something. After the code is refactored, it can be improved (and the tests updated).

It takes time, but is absolutely doable.

Well said, mate.

No. Either fix this game or quit. Let's not become another development team that 'requires sequels' to make something they were supposed to be making the first time around. They won't get my money for it, I can promise you that.

March has got to be 'Nonsense Month'.

As evidenced by the nut-bagger posts that proliferate.

March madness.

March Madness has definitely had an effect here.

Though I don't actually know if they watch or play bouncy-ball in England, or if they do, but have some variation of it, such as bouncing the ball with a stick, or dribbling the ball with their faces, or whatever twist they might have on it. Maybe it's exactly the same... dunno, don't watch it myself.

But seriously, things break and get fixed all the time.

There, it has a crown and everything on it, so it's official.

You can't know if it's spaghetti code unless you review the actual code.

They probably need a new engine as it seems the current engine limits what they can do in terms of missions. This makes them depend on RNG for everything.

I say we stick with the Elite Dangerous 10 year plan and let the team learn and acquire knowledge. After the ten years is up, they could develop a new Elite game from the ground up with all that acquired experience and knowledge gained by making Elite Dangerous.

for the record... as much as i know it wont happen, and as much as i would RAGE about bait and switch of not giving me value out of my LTP..

who am i kidding, assuming it was the same as what is in the DDF and not some PvP forced guild fest like star citizen...... i would buy it, i would KS it even (though i would be kicking in the minimum to get the game not going in at a high level), even tho it fundamentally goes against everything i believe in. I just like Elite.

The only fail FD has had is making open in this game. A mainly single player game, adding pg was inspirational. ED never was a pvp game, trying to invite that into the elite universe was an instant fail. If FD had made a separate pvp game it would already be dead.
I always laughed at the single player games that added multiplayer maps as an addon, they never last long.
It was easy to see why this game could never be an offline game, to much data for any computer. Adding a tiny pvp mode, thinking there would be real honorable pirates was, well, it was never gonna happen. Delete open mode and work on the real player base.

Mega nicely said cmdr.

Well....

It's a conundrum isn't it. It's clear that certain element of this game (for example, the interwoven BGS and mission boards), are extremely complex, intertwined, and impossible to predict.

The formulas and algorithms that generate this game must be so complex and tentacle-y, that you have to admit looking at fixes applied recently, even FD find it difficult to predict exactly hwat will be affected and to what degree when they make a change to a few parameters.

Some would say that is a good reason to draw a line and start again.

I don't think I would be upset to hear that 3.0 will be the last season and Elite 4 is coming soon(tm), but I also probably wouldn't stop playing this version until it came out, it's a good game. Just CnP, omg. There's a balance between harsh and fun, you missed it. Please try again. Thanks!

Unfortunately there's still a long way to go before ED feels complete, so I will enjoy what I have for the moment. :)

That BFI bin where it completes whatever is going on with ED isn't that far down the back alley cmdr.

Nevermind whatever coding nightmare may or may not be present, the mere fact they reeeally have expressed via in game changes / nerfs etc that show they do not know what
players find fun and brings enthusiasm, more than suggests that with the same vision regardless of the coding structure or quality it will still remain in the back alley of games--a stone throw away from the big blue bin
