They appear as mission rewards for solo missions. You get better rewards from missions when you are allied with the faction giving the missions. I just turned down 5 exquisite focus crystals too, because I have loads already and wanted the influence effect instead.

As other posters have said, Modified Embedded Firmware (MEF) can commonly be found as a Mission Reward (both Solo and Wing missions) as well as by scanning the Data Points at Surface Settlements.

Alternatively if you have an excess of other types of Data that you don't need, you could trade for MEF at an Encoded Material Trader in a High-Tech, high-population system despite the abysmal exchange rates. I'd suggest using the Data types that you pull from basic ship scans as those are easily re-acquired by sitting in a HazRes site.

Take missions with Rare material and then exchange them at Material Trader.
But best is to find friends in game as it's online game.

Not true, i got plenty from solo missions. I did the combat CG last week and hat missions to destroy 70-90 ships in the combat zone for 5 MEF. So basicly while working on kills for the CG i also did kill missions.

Hello again, I have another mission that gives 3 of these for destroying 12 sentry skimmers.

I think you may need to be Allied with the faction giving the mission, but that is pretty easy to get.

Right now I am getting MEF's by the 5 count from running passenger missions. I think I have around 45 of them right now.

Last week-ish I had nearly a full metric ton of them built up from running haulage missions but I spent a bunch of them during a re-engineering run on a few ships and a handful of spare weapons.

They are there is you care to look for them.

And for the record I have never done any multi-crew things.....EVER. Hell I've only been in a wing maybe twice for goofing around in a RES. You don't need friends to get mats.

You'll rarely get anything better than grade 2 materials for the local one-way passenger missions.
The higher grades seem restricted to tourist trips.

Ouch. That's what i was afraid of. The way I've been collecting my MEF/Biotech/Exquisite Focus Crystals is from becoming allied with a faction that always offers wing Assassination Missions and then I just solo them. I can get five of one kind or another, the mission is fun and only takes about twenty minutes round trip, maybe a little less.
