How long will Elite Dangerous rule the world of space games?

I don't think any other space flight sim game ever held the "crown" other then Elite.
EVE is horrid, Star Citizen will NEVER be out of (even) Alpha state, and those are the only real competition Elite has.
Elite has held the title for 30 years, they'll hold it for another 30.

Which of the mentioned games support VR? Scratch all others from the list of contenders.

Anyway, I am looking forward to X4 (even if it wouldn’t support VR - but if I am not mistaken, it does!? Serious question, I am not sure here.)
Nevertheless, I will wait until way after the release (fan reactions) and some time for patching (Egosoft!). ‘Rebirth’ was just such a horrible experience and I’ve learned my lesson.

Isn't the key Question NOT "How Long will Elite remain top dog" but more broadly Why with the exception of Star Citizen (probably ) and notable shout-outs to (likely to remain unfinished indi-games) Rogue System etc is there nothing else even remotely similar to Elite out there or on the horizon?
Currently Elite is really the ONLY Space Flight/Combat game out there...with nothing else similar nipping at its heels...
Everything else mentioned in this thread tends to be MMOs or 4X games or even RPGs - none of them look to have you actually FLYING even a pseudo-realistic Spaceship (which is the heart of Elite)
Back in "The Golden Age" it used to be such a popular genre (even given the limitations of computing at the time) WIng Commander, X WIng/Tie Fighter, Privateer, Freelancer, Freespace etc etc now...tumbleweed...

Because its insanely complicated to get a game like ED working, and its difficult to predict how development will go. It is just a very risky endeavor, prone to all kinds of problems. So making a new 'open world with a flimsy story but better graphics than last year's offerings' game is simply much more sensible, because it aims at a larger market, is easier to make with more readily available personnel with relevant experience.

As long as no other game manages to simulate an entire galaxy Elite will be my no. 1 space game. It doesn't get more "space" than this. Other games will be probably more popular though, either through better accessibility (casual) or richness of features (simulation). Elite will never die, out of the blue and into the black.

There are those that think Elite does not, in fact, rule the world of space games. Some think That Other Space Game That Shall Not Be Named In These Forums is a much better game, and sits atop the hill.

From the outset as I see it, ED was designed as an 'open sandbox' style of Spacecraft Flight and Combat simulator which also has the trading (and later along came passengers needing transport) elements as well. All this within the framework of the ACTUAL GALAXY you can look up into the night sky and see! You can of course (if you know your stars) look up there and think (or exclaim out loud if you want!) 'I've been there' as you see Sirius, or Alpha Centauri, or perhaps Vega. I'm not sure there is any other game out there currently where you can get that connection to the actual space and stars that you can see!

Of course it also gave players the option to run in solo, group, or open. Open enables you to meet other players which in my mind makes it much more enjoyable. Personally I play almost exclusively in open and with probably 3000 hours played I think I have only been ganked about 5 times, but met hundreds of other CMDRs, some of whom were new to the game and I enjoyed helping them along offering a little bit of protection, or help with mining, or whatever was useful to them. I even passed up on high value painite asteroids on two or three occasions, purely so they could get the lot!

All the above is why I keep coming back to ED, although I have to say I did also have the ORIGINAL game on the BBC in 1984! The 2 iterations in the 90's went some way towards making it the game I always imagined all those years ago, but once ED came out .... well .... this was it!

There are other elements that help it be a bit more of a game, the missions, and linked ones, passengers, exploring (but this also meets the 'simulator' option as well/instead), Power Play, pirates, combat etc etc ..... however for some (many?!) this is just not enough! 'SC travel in many systems is too far and takes too long - boring!' ... 'gankers spoil it for everyone' ... 'Can't make enough from trading per hour to make it enjoyable' .... 'everything is a grind' .... (I could go on and on!)

For those of us that wanted a SPACE SIMULATOR 'game', ED certainly goes a long way towards achieving that (but with room for improvement still), probably more so than anything that seems to be fully released at the moment! (unless I've missed something?)

As long as there are cumulative improvements to the existing and new content, Elite will dominate. But to predict that it will remain so indefinitely is to be presumptuous.

All we need for Elite to stay on top for another 10 years, is that focused Exploration missions boards specific and dedicated for each newly discovered astronomical body is introduced with the next upgrade. ( Come to a new planet, get the option to do exploration missions to learn more and gain extra XP/CR with the risk of experiencing the time of your life or death ).

That alone would immerse a whole new generation of players to the universe of Elite. And firmly re-establish it as the foremost prominent space game in the entire history of human kind.

Thanks Frontier Developments.

So, that's two players lost, then? [haha]

I have a sneaking suspicion that as soon as the "other game" looks like drawing players away in large numbers, FD will come up with a stonkingly good version which they have been holding back on us all this time. (Like legs , or dinosaur hunting .... that sort of level of game).

I hope you're right.....but saving the "good stuff" until you're forced to perform and hoping "meh" sustains you until then isn't a good business strategy. What does that say about how you feel about your consumers?

As for "just two then?"....well I know you're kidding, but no matter whose videos you watch right now....Chaoswulf hasn't made an Elite video in over a month and posting Skyrimm videos. Vindicator Jones' last one wasn't even hiding what's really on his mind. Some of the other content creators have stated that they mainly just make videos now and aren't really playing anymore. Yamiks is well....even more Yamiksey than normal. OA - you can tell he's just creating videos because he HAS to to maintain his audience in case something cool actually happens or he decides to stop, but it all feels kind of boilerplate as of late and the disappointment and boredom with the game is hard to miss in ANY of the content creators....to me, I sense a very strong Cornelius Briedis just before he quit subtext. I don't think anyone really wants to leave. I certainly don't. I WANT Elite to be a good came, and I've given it many many passes because I think it has great potential, but I think we're all just getting kind of bored and everything FDev does just makes the game more bland, pointless, and unnecessarily complicated. I know content creators aren't "Everyone" but if you take a cross-section of them you get a pretty good pulse of the Elite community...and right now, it's fading

If I didn't know any better I'd swear Elite was being produced by politicians.

To top it all off, the forums are just full of haters and white knights, and the biggest discussion on any given day is either "open mode master race" or "OP PLZ NRF!!!" followed by "Y U NRF????"

I can only speak for myself and therefore I think Elite Dangerous will never be run over by another space game.
I loved Elite in 84 and been hoping for a sequel for decades, I've played about every lookalike but they never gave me the same experience.
ED is the game I've been waiting for since 84, yes things need fixing, yes I'd like to see other stuff added but ED is my modern day Elite 84.
I don't see another game beat that in the foreseeable future.

For myself, until something that has good HOTAS support comes along.
X: did not work last time I tried. Plus it's a horrible game.

Because (in the extremely unlikely event that SC turns out to be something more than vapourware) "that other game" looks like drawing players away - because of better flight models/more skill-based combat/more immersive and engaging navigation/docking or whatever it may be...Elite could trump it by releasing "Walking round a Spaceship Simulator" or giving us dinosaurs ??? Jeez...

Taking sides in a nonexistant battle.
Like a game can't live a long healthy life in a niche genre. Kids...
New players find old games every day. Todays twitch shooters tomorrows dad gamers. A serious lack of perspective going on.

I have been taking a brief look at other upcoming space games. Some are marvelous, others are average and many are just terrible....

Now the question I want to ask is: How competent will Elite Dangerous be when these games are established. Will it have advanced further than them all or its crown will be taken and given to _____?

Great question, and one that's been on my mind too.

I would answer Six Months.

Here are some of the contenders imo:

- Bethesda's Starfield: Hopefully we will know at E3, but the rumor is they are making something to jump ahead of ED and SC. (fingers crossed!)

- No Mans Sky: They have a major release coming ~August 1st, and if it includes true multiplayer that is fun they could begin to take market share away from Elite. (I own it, but without co-op it collects dust)

- Star Citizen: They are getting very close to having an actual fun game, but I'm skeptical that it could happen in 2018. (I own it, but right now I rather play ED as the SC controls are not good imo)

- Dual Universe: Can they move past being "Minecraft" in space and add engaging missions, etc? (I'm a Kickstarter backer of this title)

- Unannounced Title: I have to imagine someone out there thinks they can top SC, ED, and NMS, and due to all the drama SC and NMS have had may not announce their title until it's truly ready for prime time.

Features the next King of Space Games needs to have:

- Open World Simulated Galaxy. This has already been done by ED and NMS.

- Massively Multiplayer. Everyone should be able to play together. ED, Dual Universe, SC have this today (but two are not released) and NMS may get it this summer.

- Ships that are fun to fly. I think ED has the best ships to fly hands down.

- Places to visit on foot. NMS and SC have done this well.

- Engaging professions. I think THIS is the "Holy Grail," and I do think ED has a head start but is not there yet. SC seems to be on a good path here.

- Land and walk on any solid planet or body of sufficient mass.

How long will people keep asking for another update?

I was going to follow this with an opinion, no point here, as you can see from pre kickstarter days and what we've got. I think that reading through thread titles on these forums speak more volumes than I can. Click on 'Forum' and see what game is top of the list.

'nuf said.
