Am I right in thinking you had to back the kickstarter to have "Jameson" feature in your CMDR name?

Sorry Un1k0rn - I thought you were.
Hopefully those concerned will be along to discuss, if they're still active :)

I have a feeling I know what they would say.

However, let me put it bluntly. Neither the backers nor FD have any legal claim or right to any Gamertags, including those featuring "Jameson", unless of course said individuals make an Xbox Live account with the "desired" name. Furthermore, if a Gamertag with the desired name is already claimed, they have no right to contest for it.

FD have no say over Xbox Gamertags. The only ToS regarding names that I am required to follow on the Xbox platform, is Microsoft's. A ToS I am not in breach of. FD only has control of reserved names on PC/Mac, as they own the network. The gaming network of Xbox Live is the property of Microsoft, not FD. FD has no say in the issue. The backers have no say.

If you reserved Jeff Jameson on PC, it only applies to the PC platform. On Xbox, I am the individual entitled to Jeff Jameson as I am the one who claimed the name on the Xbox network, which is a first come first served service.

TL;DR: The name Jeff Jameson on the Xbox platform belongs to me, and there is no legal case for it to be changed as it is fully compliant with Microsoft ToS.

I'm not sure about legalese but that's how I understand it too. Basically what Frogsfriend said a bit earlier - no one at FD really thought it through.

Enjoy the weight that the name brings, CMDR Jeff Jameson - make your granddad proud :D

Never has someone had to change their name on Xbox just because a game exists.

There is a reason for this.

Anyway, yes. I will enjoy the name. Fly safe. o7

Only if someone else is using the specific name they reserved. Which they aren't, so they can't.

Seeing problems where they don't exist?

That tier had a LIMITED NUMBER OF SLOTS, for a reason. So that every unikorn and his dog isn't running about with lore based names on launch day in the same way that you get 20 versions of "gimli, legolas sephiroth" and all the other wannabe names in most other mmo's.

I wanted my lore based name, because I've been using it as my gamer tage for 30 years, and they refused, others were too.

Now you can have it for the cost of a name change - there are quite serious ramifications to this:

A) FDev knew that they would have no control over Xbox gamer tags, but decided that they were going to sell the "Jameson" lore name anyway to increase revenue. If you try and tell me they were not thinking of adding console support before the KS started, I'll call you a liar to your face. Xbox was ALWAYS in the plan, they just didn't tell us because of what consolification was going to do.

B) FDev didn't know AND more importantly, didn't care enough to check before adding that to a high level pledge tier, which was absolutely guaranteed to get some people to buy it.

We're not talking pocket change here, it's a LOT of money, and the tier was worded to make backers beleive that their "Jameson" tag would be ABSOLUTELY EXCLUSIVE TO THEM.

Now those few players with a legit "Jameson" in thier gamertag have no special meaning any more - and the next Jameson you see, instead knowing it's a player who paid a LOT of money for the priviledge of having that RP lore connection - it's just another dude who paid £8.

The entire thing has been devalued to worthless, and the RP value of the name, meaningless.

I'd be pretty peed off if I was one of them.

Because of this I've now got legit grounds to request my lore name, because the exclusivity / reserved of "lore" names has been broken.

A pretender - a charlatan, a namechange does not a heritage give, just like those people who buy family coats of arms and "titles" that have no history.

(btw my family has both).

Come off it, paying extra for a special name in a video game is just a personal choice and they got their special names so the deals done and delivered. It's not like they'll ever meet themselves in game as.

I think some kickstarter supporters, will be justified in asking for a £1500 refund

KS is over, done. I think it's time KS backers stopped behaving like they own the game. They provided the seed cash for the project and the project delivered the initial game. That's how kickstarter works. You don't get to buy shares in the company, you get to buy a product.

For goodness sake. Another fuss over nothing. People got their reserved names on the PC platform and they won't see anyone on other platforms so none of that matters.

Please move on to more important matters like open v solo.

LOL! You're taking a fictional character who doesn't exist very seriously!

I don't care that your family has a coat of arms BTW. I'm not someone who offers respect because you happened to be the child of someone. When you do something for me, then I'll listen.

Welcome to the real world. Nobody cares that you're loaded.

Especially not me. Have fun!

inb4 first discovered paranoia.

Unless, of course, the commander-formerly-known-as-Un1k0rn has done some exploring and made some First Discoveries, or will do so in the near future. Since the bug that prevented cross-platform discovery tags from being visible has now been fixed, everyone will now see his current CMDR name as the discoverer. So in that small sense, we will all see him.

As for the outrage, two observations:

- The way I read the ED Kickstarter schedule, the £1500 pledge level promised to "reserve" a name, not that those "Jameson" names would not be allowed to be given to anyone else. It was the right to buy a particular Jameson name, not the right to purchase into an elite monopoly.

- Back when the game was launched, non-PC platforms were a remote possibility; I even seem to recall an official announcement that there were "no plans" to launch on PS4 or XBox, which some on the forum interpreted as "We will never put the game on consoles". Still, they can hardly be faulted for failing to take into consideration a side-effect of a business model shift that was not even planned for at Kickstarter.

OP seems like a bio waste stirrer to me.

Also didnt know you could change your name so easily, jesus im sure the sado's that live on here love that.
