getting to elite in combat

One thing not mentioned anywhere (AFAIK) is; do CMDRs count, and if so, does their rank count too?

As a Deadly CMDR you have to kill 20 Elite NPC's to advance 1%. No wing. No SLF. IME the best/fastest is in a CNB.

Fly/land safe.

How does it work? Do they keep respawning?
Can I grind them with regular weapons or do I need an anti-thargoid ship?

Got 57% of grind remaining..

Fly around in the system looking for non-human signal sources, drop in on them and kill the scouts. They spawn in groups of 2-12 depending on the threat level and the signal sources spawn often so they're really easy to farm. Unfortunately they only pay 10k credits per kill, so no big profits will be made if you're looking for that on the side.

In terms of weapons, you can use regular or anti-xeno on scouts. Keep in mind though, the AX weapons do a lot more damage than the regular ones so it's worth buying them. The turreted AX multi-cannons do a good job at mopping them up so I'd say fit your ship with four of them, and fill the rest of the hardpoints with regular weapons of your choice.

Does the crew member steal points even if he isn't active or flying an SLF?

I've been unable to get a definitive answer on that although it seems likely that they they only suck 50% of your experience when active. Although the whole situation with SLF pilots is such a horrible design decision that frankly nothing would surprise me.

So a harmless gets 3 points to kill an Elite! Has a harmless ever killed an elite. What is the highest rank of a ship destroyed by a harmless?

Tembala and Nogambe until Thursday
This. I went from 89% Deadly to 97% Deadly last night alone in Nogambe. Gonna finish it up tonight.

I have my second FdL set up to do nothing but kill Thargoid Scouts. 4x gauss (fired two at a time to avoid melting my ship) and a c4 Thermal Vent beam underneath, with maxed out shields and armor. I can usually mow through 30-50 Scouts before going back for ammo or hull repair.

No you get the XP when you they explode, although as the chart on the previous page shows, as you get to high combat ranks, some low level kills give you nothing at all. And yes if you have an SLF pilot, whatever combat experience you do get is halved. Who the hell thought that was a good idea?

In the case of combat theres nothing wrong with the design. You hired them to help at combat, there helping at combat. They take a cut.

The issue most people have is they still earn cash when inactive. And also they take cash and XP when doing activities that are not combat related.

The scenario you point out is the one time there actually earning their crust.

Also combat rank is probably the least important imo, doesnt tell you much about a CMDR other than he may have spent hours on end farming NPC's

I disagree, I hired them which means I pay them money to do their job, lots of money. That should be more than adequate without them draining 50% of my experience too. I cant see any reason why both my pilot and I cant earn full experience in combat, in fact the whole idea of sharing it out 50/50 like we're conjoined twins just seems bizarre and nonsensical. But even worse its just bad game design to further punish the player for using a game feature which they already paid for, sacrificed space on their ship for and is supposed to help them out.

With the fact that they take the same amount of your cash even when they're hanging around the pilots lounge doing nothing, yes I agree that's also completely game design. But then so is their weird experience-vampire behavior.

Your fighting together, you share the spoils. I dont see the issue. Crew also need to level and thats why your paying XP. Thats the price for levelling them.

What is it you want combat rank for?

Just to make it clear, do not use a crew or fighter if you're trying to rank yourself up. It'll take twice as long.

I always do my ranking up in a high RES, which I believe is the quickest way. Jump in and out until you get a frequent spawn of only small ships. Make your ship as fast as possible and engineer your weapons and sensors for long range, then you should be able to tag every ship before the feds finish them off.

For the OP: you can find a list of CNBs here: https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php/241872-Finding-Compromised-Nav-Beacons-CNB

Or hunt in a wing.

Best find a system with a CNB, you'll find lots of deadly + elite ship at those, which is what you need to kill.

The Elite wiki list's the points per kill which you will find helpful
http://elite-dangerous.wikia.com/wiki/Combat

Bear in mind being in a wing splits your XP the same way having a crew does.

Nope, that's wrong. I shouldn't be penalized - that is, actively discouraged - for playing with a crew and/or wing, whether made of NPCs or players or both. Paying crewmembers a fair wage is one thing, having them steal full percentage of ALL profits and half (or more) of my XP gains is nothing short of highway robbery.

Also combat rank is probably the least important imo, doesnt tell you much about a CMDR other than he may have spent hours on end farming NPC's

Even if you do nothing but shoot fish in a barrel, after a certain extent of time you're going to be quite familiarized with your gun, the constructive properties of barrels, and the qualities of fish as targets (and in dealing with the remains of the latter two).

Your fighting together, you share the spoils.

That's not right, though. Find me an active game in 2018 that punishes players for doing multiplayer things like having a crew or being in a wing by splitting (that is, reducing) their gains like Elite's been doing without telling anybody since the introduction of SLFs and wings.

(Hint: the vast majority of games give you MORE xp and credits, not less - not that that is what I'm asking for....)

I dont see the issue. Crew also need to level and thats why your paying XP. Thats the price for levelling them.

If you can't see the issue with losing XP - that is, being actively punished for daring to participate in crew/wing activities - then I'm not sure there's any helping your point of view.

What is it you want combat rank for?

Because it's one of the few goalposts in the game to try reaching. Status, power, prestige, "because it's there", call it what you like. Being dismissive of a desire to reach that goal doesn't make a good excuse for defending something that directly impedes doing so, if you so much as touch multicrew/wing stuff.

The issue is that in a hypothetical well designed game we could BOTH be earning full experience for the full fighting we are both doing. There's no reason at all it has to be split 50/50 except dev sadism and bad game design. Paying half my experience to the SLF pilot is just a weird anti-player mechanic which punishes the player unduly for using a game feature which they have already paid - and paid well - for.

Some very good advice here which I'll be following. Hopefully now I'll have some chance of getting to Elite combat rank some time this century without that millstone of an SLF pilot hanging around my neck.

The reason your paying XP instead of just credits is they want you to EARN and elite ranked crew member unless your already elite yourself.

Its boiling down to "i dont think its right so its wrong"

Nobody is punishing anybody really,if you dont need assistance in combat dont get any and it wont cost you a penny.

Could always take a crew member out every now and then when you fancy a bit of slf fighting then rid yourself of them after you have had your fill.

I do agree idle crew should get no XP and only a retainer rather than full pay but im ok with the fighters earning XP from me.

Killing Elite Sidewinders and Eagles at compromised nav beacons did it for me. It's a grind no matter what you do.

That is NOT what I want out of being able to have a crew. I want a crew I can hold onto, get attached to, and build my own personal narrative with - and not feel like I'm being beaten in the shins for having one.

Ok, but then people should not complain about engineered ships and weak NPCs.

If it's part of the game to double the amount of NPCs that have to be grinded, then it's only logical to provide tools for the player to speed up the grind.

Outside ranking, having multicrew does not make any sense. They take 10% of what you earn the whole month just to help out that one hour where you feel like blowing up stuff.

Does it damage only the hull or also the modules?
Should I bring military composites and hull reinforcement packages?
