Yes but more seriously ... just what is a "SAP 8 Core Container"?

Is it a container for SAP 8 cores or is "SAP 8 core" the name of the kind of container?

Why does it matter? Well ... if "SAP 8 core" describes the container then it is possible that a SAP 8 Core Container could contain something other than the crystal shard described in the object's text. If, however, SAP 8 Core refers to the crystal inside the container then it is descriptive. What the heck is a SAP 8 core?

When I'm not flying around the galaxy I'm using piloting my way though either a Linux or Unix filesystem. When I think of a "core" I think of a memory dump ... the recorded state of memory from a program. Core files get their name from the now long-obsolete magnetic-core memory planes used in computers back in the 50s, 60s and 70s. Today's RAM uses electricity so once a computer powers down the memory state is lost. These old magnetic cores used magnetism so even the computer lost power the last state of memory would remain intact. You could, conceivably, physically examine the RAM to debug what caused the computer to crash.

SAP-8 Core Containers contain a "crystalline shard of unknown origin". I can't help but wonder if these shards are some form of memory but, instead of magnetic, these memories store their ones and zeroes in crystalline structures. I'm thinking of something similar to the crystal holographic memory squares used by HAL 9000 in 2001: A Space Odyssey. The ones that Bowman removed to disable HAL as the movie came to a close. If a SAP-8 Core does contain a memory state then the question is "how do we access them"? According to the description any attempt to breach the containment field will cause the container's destruction and, I assume, the loss of the crystalline shard itself. I think the key is going to be in figuring out what "SAP-8" indicates. If we knew a little bit more about what these cores are then we might have a chance of figuring out what to do with them.

When I was a student I had a metal box (about a foot cube) which was core memory from the Lyons computer, ferrite rings all strung together by fine wiring, so know what you mean.

I have a suspicion that this is Sirius Antimatter Propulsion core, as in nuclear reactor core. I suspect the 8 means that 8 containers are needed to get a whole one; alternatively it is a mk8 version.

though I just might be wrong

I presume it refers to what's in the container, what's in the container being a fusion core-containment field.

And that the "SAP 8 Core" is what the "modified" fusion core-containment field is normally used for in its unmodified state, possibly related to ship power plants.

Would also hazard a guess that SAP is an acronym just because of UI limitations, ie an upper limit for a commodity so it had to be shortened.

Then again if SAP8 Core Container is the equipment generating the modified fusion core-containment field, then what would a non-modified core-containment field container be called.

8 also does seem a bit odd.

Yep! But something really has me thinking "unidentified signal source." But either way it just reinforced my belief that you can hide anything within signal source location. We take them for granted and only tend to want to notice them when we're looking for materials, or the like.

Hi

I have noticed that there have been for me; a few weird occurrences in USS's very recently (can't be more specific as to time-frame):

On three occasions (separated by multiple hours play) I have entered the "Degraded Emissions Detected" USS (all in Open):

1. At least four ships were present, I arrived right in the middle of their globe, they opened fire immediately without comms. (The incident was too fast/violent to garner any concrete observations)
2. There was absolutely nothing in this USS. (well scouted.... even looked behind the sofa :p)
3. There was only one object floating way off (I'm frequently on the salvage for materials) when targeted there was NO description of the object, I scooped it perfectly HOWEVER it exploded as it reached my scoop. (?Player/Game criteria for identification and then successful salvage NOT met?)

There's some weird stuff out there... fly safe commanders o7

Pirate Trap uss used to be quite common, particulalry in Anarchy systems I think, though you got a second or two before they opened fire. The bait was often quite tasty, Trinkets of Hidden Fortune, Gold etc, but you need to be quick to pick it up. If its health is low it may have degraded to zero just as you scooped it.

So was this experience significantly different?

Possibly 8 is actually infinity viewed from 90 degrees. It would then tie to the ‘self-sustaining’ part of the description.

A couple of other ideas.

Anything with unknown origins and an 8 always hints at Thargoids so it could be something Thargoid related, although that’d be a bit mundane.

But semi-inspired by that, perhaps SAP-8 is something Protocol-8.

Standard, Sentient, Significant, Serious, Sirius...

Artefact, Alien, AI (ok, a touch dodgy I know, but acronyms of acronyms do happen! ;) ).

So, whatever combo of S and A, then either Protocol-8 core container, or Protocol infinity-core container.

Could even be Protocol infinity, as in contain indefinitely - which is what it would appear to do from the description...

Standard, Sentient, Significant, Serious, Sirius...

It is a common trope in science fiction to talk about mankind making contact with another sentient species ... but sentience isn't all that it is cracked up to be. Lots of species are sentient. My dogs are sentient.

When people think of sentience what they are actually thinking of is sapience. Maybe the SAP in SAP-8 is for sapient and they could be related to that much rumored rogue-AI.

Wish my dog was either sapient or sentient.
Chocolate Labrador- there’s a reason you never see them used as guide dogs!

His latest trick is to stand on his hind legs like a kangaroo in order to eat apples higher up the tree (since he’s stripped the lower branches); it might be cunning but it doen’t say much for any sense of self-preservation......

SAP stands for ‘Socially Awkward Penguin’.

I’m Not sure about the rest.

Careful he’s an axe-wielding ninja & will sneak up behind you unawares. You’ll never see him in that black pyjama suit; unless the smell of fish gives him away

Still suspect Sirius Antimatter Propulsion core; seem to vaguely remember a galnet article about Sirius & Antimatter Propulsion, which I interpreted as a (rare) clue...

SAP = Sound Amplifying Pedal? :D

On a more serious note, did this ever happen (taken from the DJTruthSayer Twitch stream that Scytale linked)?

If Raxxla were indeed a myth then that would fit with both "it's in the game" and "you don't know what it is*"

They wouldn't do that to use would they?

*I know this is probably irrelevant.

Quick question...as the rabbit hole gets deeper. Did the comment "it's in the game and we know where it is" come before or after Ed came onboard as Community Manager?

Fairly sure it came long before, & in the chapter 2 livestream interview DB seemed to indicate that Ed doesn’t know anything about Raxxla.
I imagine only DB, MB, & maybe a small handful of others are in the know on this. Anyone planning on taking some truth drug to the next conference?

I PMed him several times about it. Never got a response.

I asked MB about Raxxla when I met the FD team in the hotel lobby when I was at FX17. Unsurprisingly, he refused to give an answer.

They could, at least, tell us what "Raxxla" is. Or if it follows RH's original lore... [mad]
Which brings me back to past times where these few excellent pages of posts, (and specially Doc's and DW's,) may come in hand to the new arrived threaders. If they didn't already read them.

Iirc, this was not a comment adressed directly to the community by the FDev's. DW asked some FDev (DB I think) who gave him this answer. Then DW made the comment.
EDIT: got it. Memory still works...a bit.
