News Focused Feedback Forum Content Schedule

As usual, FDevs community/PR comms are badly managed.
For example, we've got that nice series discussing aspects of the game, like the Stellar Forge. Why isn't that continued? Isn't that only ed stepping into character and talking though interesting bits with some of the devs?
In any case, it would be a nice move to gap the meaningful announcements.
Ed mentioned during a recent Elite livestream that Discovery Scanner (the series you're referring to) will be returning Soon™, along with more dev-oriented streams and discussions.

Sounds good. I do think (spandex aside) a lot of livestreams will be like this though:

No matter what is put up people will moan like old women in cold weather.

My hunch is the opposite, that Frontier is actually behind schedule and are trying to figure out what features to cut in order to make it for 2018. It's why both the exploration and fleet carrier reveals haven't happened yet. They clearly felt they were ready back in May when they gave us the original schedule, but the fleet carrier and exploration reveals are now two months overdue with no info on when we will see them. Stuff like this happens during development of course, sometimes ambitions are too large to meet schedules and things get trimmed. When we do get the reveals we will likely never know if things were trimmed or not.

Anyway, that's my gut feeling. I think things are still very much in flux and it's why Frontier has been so silent; they don't want to promise anything until they decide what they will actually be delivering. IMHO of course.

I am going to keep an open mind myself.

Exploration update will make or break this game for me.

It's going to take a huge improvement to exploration to get me interested, a complete overhaul.

What I've seen in the mining feedback does not impress, and doesn't give me much confidence WRT exploration.

Each to their own. I really like the look of the new mining update. What would you have preferred?

That was the amended schedule.

The original estimated schedule was copy-pasta'd to Reddit:
  • Squadrons Discussion - 7th 8th May (7th was a UK Bank Holiday)
  • Mining Discussion - 28th May
  • Exploration/Codex Discussion - 18th June
Exploration/Codex Discussion looks to be at least 8 weeks later than originally estimated.

They're probably having too much fun trying to slingshot drones around planets to do anything else. ;-)

My hunch as well.

That might be true. What's baffling with ED is that there's 4 billion stars, and 99% of the game play is in only some 50,000 of them. Perhaps FD finally is realizing this and that exploration needs a huge improvement to really make use of the other 99.9994% of the galaxy.

I still don't understand why it wasn't a major focus after launch. Even if there wasn't a huge amount to find at the time it would've been good groundwork for later.

I would hope they'd simply state the development is taking longer, and take as long as it needs TBH! eg: Release 3 months late!

Yes.

Very true, but I think the majority of us are civilised enough to be OK with some information. From the examples you provided, the lack of any information whatsoever is the worst IMHO.

P.S. The forums are constantly on fire, regardless ;)

Oh yes, some information would be good, regardless of the fire :)

I know FD work hard, and they're certainly ambitious want to do a LOT of things with the game but they also seem to have a habit of over-reaching and not getting to where they wanted to be.
For me personally the exploration update is the one I've been waiting for since launch and I really hope features aren't being cut from it. I'd rather they said, "due to blah blah we can't do it all now but we're starting here" and we get the full thing whenever it's ready.
But I'd also really like them to talk about what's going on. They don't owe us anything, it'd just be my preference and way I'd try and do things.

Off the top of my head, have I already mined this rock? If yes, outline in red.

And that's all you would want added to the current mechanics. Or is that in addition to the new mechanics? If so it may have been a good idea to put that in the focus forums.

An idea there might have been that expired prospecting limpets showed up like that in some fashion, to keep track of past mined objects.

I still don't understand why it (exploration) wasn't a major focus after launch. Even if there wasn't a huge amount to find at the time it would've been good groundwork for later.

If you watch that Frontier video from four years ago where a lot of the devs state their favorite aspect or role when playing Elite, you'll notice that not one of them says exploration. It's combat, or smuggling, or mining, or playing multiplayer, or even trading, but not a single dev says they play to explore the galaxy. That mentality has been mirrored in how the game has been developed these past four years, with exploration being almost entirely neglected.

And here we are with the Q4 update coming soon, and the exploration reveal saved for last, but now slipping to two months late with absolutely no information about why or when to expect it whatsoever. Like an afterthought, again.

It's a very good possibility why exploration has not been a focus during development and seemingly continues to not be a priority for development: maybe the devs just aren't that interested in it. Sure 3.3 is slated to finally have some exploration development but it very much feels like Frontier is doing it reluctantly, almost like they feel they have to but aren't really invested in it.

Who knows. We're finally getting some exploration dev attention in a few months. I just hope they are making up for lost time.

But to me that's still just a very minor QoL feature, certainly not as interesting as the gameplay they're going to introduce

That's what I was thinking. It's a very minor QoL update which isn't really going to make mining any better.

Personally I really cannot see much wrong with the new mining mechanics. Looking forward to seeing them in action.

I have no idea why they didn't concentrate on exploring after the initial release. Some stuff they added they needed to like wings, CGs were okay, Powerplay was a failure, and CQC was just a plain odd update.

What they shiuld have done with horizons was concentrate on the planets which they had just released by making the gameplay on these much better such as better scanning mechanics instead of just random features that had nothing to do with planetary landings. It was a bizarre decision to be honest.

It wouldn't just be a benefit for explorers but a benefit for missions and other types of gameplay like the thargoid and guardian places that they had planned.

I'v said for weeks, we'll be lucky to have Q4 released b4 March 2019!

STAHP!

Y'all making me lose hope agai... oh wait, I already have none :D

On a more serious note - I am refraining from speculating until I see what they have to show at Gamescom AND until I see Exploration, Codex and Squadrons/Carriers Focused Feedback.

Two months late on the exploration reveal is a little concerning when you think about it like that.

But typically FD have already decided what they want to develop and we just get to suggest tweaks to make it better. So hopefully they're not behind...

My hope is they've decided to keep quiet until Gamescom and will flesh out the remaining beyond features there, followed immediately by the focused feedback.

July/August is always a bad time for staff holidays in any company.
