There's pretty clear suggestive evidence - dating right back to 2.1 when the permit locks went in and the first barnacle discoveries - that Cone is part of the Thargoid story. The problem, which you're missing, is canonn nor the player base was made aware we were jumping into the lair of king badmofo until literally hours before.
I mean, if it was "some random explorer group" that got into trouble this way having paid no attention to "pew pew stuff like Thargoids", I'd sympathise. If Thargoids show up at waypoint 18 of DWE II on the other side of Sag A* ... sure, no possible way anyone could have seen that coming and I'll be up there saying "what were you thinking?" to Frontier too.
But I somehow find it hard to believe that the game's premier alien research group - famed for its ability to crack extremely tough puzzles in hours or days, and specialising in Thargoid research - collectively didn't notice any of the hints before organising the jump. What did you think a sector surrounded by Thargoid-related permit locks was going to contain?
(I mean, sure, when I heard the jump was signed off by Frontier I figured that it had all been another giant red herring and Cone didn't have anything to do with the Thargoids after all ... a retraction I retracted when last week's Galnet article came out. But did no-one really think "maybe there are Thargoids there" before suggesting it as a destination?)
