ED and the Oculus Rift Developers Kit 2 (DK2) Discussion Thread

Just a moment... Just a moment...

Mine arrived last week - normal bleh with setting up (freeing up two USB's in an already 'busy' system meant some jiggerypokery...!)

As far as I understand it though, I'm going to have to wait a while before i can properly use it with ED, as...

a) I've got an AMD Phenom X6, which means that I suffer from the 'ED crashes as soon as the positional camera sees the DK2' bug (it's the SSE4.1 vs SSE4a thing in the 0.3 SDK I believe?)

b) Whilst I can unplug/obscure the camera to avoid the crashing and use just the directional sensing, I've also got the 'Reset Oculus button within game doesn't work' bug. (again, guessing that an update to the game code is needed)

So unless I fly along looking sideways, the DK2 is unfortunately put to one side of the desk until the devs update ED for the 0.4 SDK

:'(

The latest 4.1SDK fixes the SSE issue. Have you also tried bilago's tool. It's a simple tool that solves many issues for people:

http://www.reddit.com/r/oculus/comments/2c2ipi/unofficial_oculus_service_manager_by_bilago/

I believe the .4 SDK handles SSE4a, however as ED hasn't been updated from the .3 SDK, it CTD's as soon as the camera can see the headset.

But i'm not a software developer, so I may be talking bobbins.

But yes, I've tried the bilago tool, both for the OVR service disable and also tried the SSE4.1 emulator (which isn't packaged in the latest version of his tool, but was toooo juddery anyways when i located it separately). I've also tried both the .3 SDK and .4 SDK, and the .4 Runtime.

It's (kinda) okay - I have patience, and am fairly happy to wait for the ED devs to work their magic (especially if we can have direct mode up and running)

If your monitor is a 60htz 1080p monitor, is the DK2 going to be a rather frustrating experience, as I keep reading 75fps is required for a smooth experience?

I spent the first few days playing Elite with my Rift set at its default 75Hz refresh rate and my monitor set at its default 60Hz refresh rate.

Yesterday I read that its best to have both running at the same refresh rate so via the NVIDIA control panel I upped my monitor refresh rate to 75Hz. Playing ED today it does seem to be a smoother experience. But I'm not sure if its a placebo effect or if there is actually something to it. I will spend a few days with these settings then try it back on 60Hz/75Hz to see what's what.

Just thought I'd mention another little thing I picked up when trying to get the best ED experience with the Rift.

You can use the Oculus Configuration Utility to measure your IPD. Its under the User/Advanced Configuration section. Select "Measure" and follow the instructions inside the Rift.

Your IPD measurement will appear on the Advanced Configuration Panel when you're done.

Tick the box that says "Enable personalized rendering for this eye position".

Also make a note of your IPD and go into the following folder:

C:\Users\UserName\AppData\Local\Frontier Developments\Elite Dangerous\Options\Graphics

Open the settings file and find this line:

<IPDAmount>0.0710000</IPDAmount>

And enter your IPD. My IPD is 68.3 mm, so I edit that line to read:

<IPDAmount>0.068300</IPDAmount>

Every little tweak like this seems to help

Please send a ticket. I have. Just to give more clout.

My monitor only offers 60Hz. even through Nvidias control panel.

Sounds promising, its good to know that people with eye issues won't be left out when the Oculus Rift drops properly :)

I have a DK2 and have a squint (stabismus I think). My right eye is dominant and does most of the seeing, and my left fills in the rest. Whichever eye is not in use tends to wander. I don't think I have any (or very little) stereoscopic vision.

Everything is fine using the DK2, if anything my eyes seem to be working together better than in reality.

Even though a lot of tasks in the game are harder with the DK2 than a monitor (due to difficulty reading the text, especially the commodity market) I won't ever be going back to the monitor. Playing Elite with the DK2 is like nothing else I've experienced playing games (and I've been playing since the early 90s).

What kind of improvements can we expect when the beta gets updated to support the DK2 natively?

No need for the hacks to get it working right now (stopping services etc).

Direct Mode support (which is apparently faster). Possibly better quality output if the Oculus forum thread posted a few pages back is correct.

No more SSE issues for those without the modern 4.1 instructions.

You'll just boot Elite and play :)

ideally at some point in the future we will be able to change the font colours to have more green in them when using the rift as well.

by most accounts, due to the increased amount of green pixels in the DK2, anything with a lot of green in it is way way clearer than other colours, so this would be ideal for text.

Are the instructions in the 2nd post still what needs to be done to get the DK2 working with Elite? I'm back from my holiday later and my DK2 has been waiting for me for 2 weeks. It arrived the day I left!!!!!!!

I received my DK2 yesterday and have done the following to get it running:

- Install Oculus SDK and Oculus Runtime as desribed in the manual
- Start ConfigUtil and set Cups, Slider and Measure IPD
- Change Display Mode to Extended
- Disabled all but one Monitor and extended to the DK2 in my Windows Display settings
- Changed Orientation for DK2
- Paused service in the ConfigUtil
- Started Elite
- Changed the Graphics Settings to use the Rift

As far as I know they are still ok.

One more point to the list form me:
Check your firmware in the ConfigUtil, if you don't have the latest Oculus said you need to upgrade for best experience.

My monitor only offers 60Hz. even through Nvidias control panel.
Try lowering your resolution to hit 75Hz on your monitor.

Right click on your desktop, select Screen resolution.
Hopefully you'll have your DK2 in extended and you'll be able to see two (or more) displays in there, one being your DK2.
Select your monitor and drop the res by one notch on the slider.
Click Advanced settings>Monitor
And check the available refresh rates.
If it is only 60hz still then back out and lower the slider another notch.
Repeat the process till you find the highest res you can run at 75Hz.

I played HL2 for about 20 mins this weekend, inside the DK2. Man was that a mistake, I had to go lie down afterwards.

Seated cockpit games are best suited for this, VR in FPS's..... oooooohhhh I didn't feel well.
