Modes Why does PvP in open even exist ???

PvP and PvE players respect each other, except PVP is porously exclusively in needs of live opposition!

On one level, maybe - however there's plenty of anecdotal evidence here on the forums that suggests that not all of one group respects the play-style choices of all of the other group.

PvP players do indeed need other players for their chosen play-style - players who can choose whether, or not, to play with them. It all boils down to "fun". When a player who does not enjoy PvP is engaged in it by a player who does enjoy it then it can end up being an asymmetric-fun experience, with the PvP player keeping it all to themself - hardly an encouragement for the PvE player to choose to repeat the experience.

Which brings us back to the beginning - a player can target another player, at any time, in Open (just as they would an NPC) - which suggests that just by playing in Open, a player has chosen to put themselves in a position where they may be engaged in PvP (even if they don't want to be) - which is their choice (even if they don't like the outcome).

What is this thread about?
OP, anybody, please explain.
I've read through it all several times now.
Don't understand.:S

Your guess is as good as mine.

Griefer for life!

Power play should be open only!

Elite Dangerous would be better off if it went open only!

Solo play is for the weak!

Burn all the things!!!!

Naturally, opinions vary on those points - especially when talking about a video game about virtual spaceships played in the comfort and safety of one's own gaming environment.

I'm working with the suggestion from this forum member:

I totally 100% want to have this discussion, so much so Im henceforth declaring a morotarium on gifs, hyperbole or sarcastic comments from myself throughout this thread, assuming the usual cowbag-ness doesnt occur.

Any of the usual players care to join me in this proposal?

Maybe we should make it like Fallout 76 - you can attack whoever you want - but if they do not shoot you back you only do like 1000th of the damage you would normally do - and so anyone who does not want to fight can simply ignore you and go about their business.

We really NEED to stop lumping all PvPers into the same boat, those who organise themselves properly are clearly a great bunch who have taken combat skills to a higher level. The issue is SEAL CLUBBING, the pathetic lowlifes who gain enjoyment from using overwhelming force against much weaker vulnerable targets. That is the type of play style that FD needs to do more to stop.

In racing sim terms it's the blithering halfwits who think it's fun to use other cars to slow themselves down, or those who go the wrong way around the track to cause crashes. NO game should allow players to gain enjoyment from RUINING other players enjoyment. That should be a core principle of mp gaming, yet many devs are woefuly inadequate in coding in protection against that sort of "player".

pvp open exists because frontier knew it would have a good appeal in the background of a dangerous galaxy, being one of the most trending aspects of games currently.

sadly, frontier had no experience whatsoever with pvp and decided to improvise instead of hiring talent so, even after much hard work and loads of superficial tweaks, the result is still just embarrassing.

If you've played fallout 76 then you would know that PvP is pointless and complete garbage in that game. If that system was put into elite, myself and many, many others would quit playing.
There are already multiple tools the devs have given you to avoid unwanted combat but it's up to you to learn them.

Yes my comment was rather tongue in cheek....

I mean are there really people that hang around start systems and shoot newbies the first time they come out of the slot?

Discuss, as per title.
Why does PvP in OPEN even exist?

Because PvP is an option in any mode except Solo, since it is one of the many features of this game.

Keep it civil!
-------------------------------------------

Certainly.

PvP in Open needs an implementation.
Or does it?

You can PvP in any mode except Solo, so it doesn't need an implementation.

Is PvP already implanted?
Why so?

It's part of the game, so yes, it's already "implanted."

Where is PvP focus in Open?

Wherever two players goals conflict with one another, and one of them is willing to attack the other's ship to achieve their goals.

If PvP is not, why allow it in the fist place?

Because PvP is one of the many features of this game.

Is PvP in Open an abuse?

Any feature of a game that allows players to interact with each other is open to abuse. You can disrupt the game of other players in Open simply by sitting at the medium ship docking platform of a busy outpost.

At last, you can (be) hardly allowed to create a play stile out off of threaten involuntary players?
Or can you?

Yes you can, otherwise we wouldn't be able to be pirates, privateers, loyalists, bounty hunters, criminals, neo-abolitionists, or antagonists.

Are PvP players abused in Elite Dangerous Open mode?
To be, and not to have any right to be there?

Please Discuss

Hardly. PvP is a feature of the game, and when you log into Open, you accept that you'll potentially be interacting with complete strangers, some of whom may be aggressive towards you.

That having been said, this game is not designed with fun PvP in mind. It lacks most of the features that make PvP games fun, the more interesting potentially competitive aspects of the game reward avoiding PvP, and the open world sandbox nature of the game ensures that outside of formal tournaments and duels, "freeform" PvP will be heavily skewed in the favor of the aggressor. 40 years of gaming history has demonstrated that in such an environment, player-killing, not PvP, will be the norm, rather than the exception.

Thankfully, we have this tri-mode system to makes it much more likely that those in Open are there because they want to face the additional challenges potential player opposition can bring. This maximizes the chances of fun PvP, both because combat loggers are more likely to play in other modes, but it also clears the proverbial playing field of everyone who is not likely to enjoy PvP at all. As a result, PvP is more likely to be fun for all involved.

And because non-PvPers are safely off in other modes, most player-killers will look for greener pastures as well, because the last thing they want is fair fight. Or something that may resemble a fair fight. Or another player that may look like they want to start a fair fight...

PVP in Open exists for you to make it what you want it to be.

It is a sandbox, you give it purpose.

Do you want massive PVP wars? Organize them.

Want to test yourself Ironman style, do so and delete your commander if someone manages to kill you.

Want a PVP only universe where everyone knows it and is looking for it? Start a PVP PG.

Just like everything else in the game PVP is there to have fun with and its direction is controlled by the players. If "Basically, PvP is used for ganking and griefing? Abuse of others?" is what the players have decided that PVP is for then it is the players fault for why PVP is disliked by others. If you don't want PVP to mean that... then wrest control of it and turn it back into something positive.

Combat, Trading, Exploration... the 3 "tiers"... none of them are directed all are sandboxed all are choices as well. PVP... well aside from CQC you could say it is the invisible "tier". Unlike the others the player chooses which title they are at. And just like the others it's direction depends on you.

The problem with Iron Man mode is that if you're opponent isn't tied to the same rules, you're handicapping yourself in a way that isn't exactly going to be fun for you (which is why very, very few people do it).

This is why Iron man mode supporters (remember when we were promised this by the devs?) pretty much all say that we'd relish the challenge, but only in an environment where everyone we encounter is tied to the same constraints, because as easy a solution as it sounds, the moment you get taken out by Billy in his suicide eagle at a CG event, you'll either be breaking the rules you set yourself, or launching your pad/joysticks/cat across the room.

Reminds me something like this 2x against you and you cant target or run ? is that fun ?

See heres the thing.

You are content for a PvPer. Either make them your content aswell, or be prepared to be exceedingly miserable in open.

Unrestricted PvP is one of the best offers this game makes a player when it comes to the option of the "Git gud", You wanna be a badass space killer? PvP is the way to learn it.
