How to install ED on Linux using Wine [EXPERIMENTAL, NOT OFFICIALLY SUPPORTED]

I've finished downloading the 3.3 update and tried to launch the game, but I'm hitting the Login Failure prompt again that used to prevent the game from running for the longest time. A friend on windows is at least able to reach the main menu (but cannot login because the servers are down, the buttons are greyed out).

Yeah, we will need RedMcG to take a look. This is one of joys using Wine - if it is not officially supported (as pointed out in subject), things will break. So far there are no things popping out in log, but to be fair, my time is cut short atm to take big swings at it. Really can't blame FD on this one :D

I installed vcrun2017 (then needed to set mode back to win7 for some reason) and now I'm logged in but don't know whether that fixed it or whether it was just the servers.

Confirmed, fixed for me too. They have moved to C++ runtime 2017. Good catch Flyingspaghetti! Saved the day again :)

Not letting me in of course, but still.

Good catch indeed. Tell me, on a scale of 1 to "I tried random things", how are you feeling right now?

Edit: For anyone who ran 'WINEARCH=... WINEPREFIX=win64 winetricks vcrun2017', make sure you switch back to Windows 7 in winecfg afterwards, or the launcher will crash.

It let me in for five minutes, now it just says can't connect to adjudication servers... guessing that's just the server issues.

Works for me too. Genius! :)

What made you try vcrun2017? A hunch that FDEV have updated their toolset(s) perhaps?

Had that error before when I forgot to install vcrun2012 so gave it a try here.

Heh. Here was me, neck deep in WINEDEBUG files trying to figure out what was going wrong.

Sort of reminiscent of how it took half the lifetime of the game for someone to come along and discover that the CRC issue was actually a simple registry fix.

I said along time ago I thought it was a registry fix. I ran into something like this in FFXVI but I could not find the problem from FFVXI. We solved it way back when. I'm pretty sure it was a different registry key though. Might have been a version of one of the programs reporting the wrong version or something for the game. It felt very similar.

I'm in the game in solo. Not sure if anyone has gotten in yet. Ran VCrun2017 and now it's letting me in the game. It didn't wipe my keybinds either. But I had a lot of new stuff to fill in.

I also had to switch from borderless to fullscreen to be able to alt tab out of the game. A little annoying but easily fixable.

I've been looking at logs for the last couple of hours and missed the solution!

I'll share what I found:
- there was no attempt to contact the servers (which is what happened when I forgot to install vcrun2012 back in the day); and
- there is crash when one of the threads first starts up (as it's given a dud address)

I'll keep looking however - as it might be possible to solve the crash in wine.

Some other news, some of redmcg's Proton fixes have made it into the latest Proton however the futex based thing that stops it from freezing hasn't as of yet.

Yeah - unfortunately it won't help with running Elite on an official Proton release. I'll follow up with Andrew - but I suspect the path for this will be to get everything out of wine-staging and in to wine-devel and wait for Proton to pick up a new Wine release.

After battling the normal .NET rubbish I finally got the launcher to run.
If I try and run Horizons I get to the generating planet bit ( after the shaders ) then it maxes out my laptop for 5-10mins until I reboot ( because machine is completely unresponsive, including ctrl-alt-f1 for console or ctrl-alt-esc to kill the program or ctrl-alt-del ).
If I try and run non-Horizons I get the video and music but then it crashes, sometimes it doesn't crash and I get a little further, even to the menu, but it's unresponsive.

I did the VC2017 update.
and I'm set to Windows 7.
kubuntu 18.04
wine 4.0rc1
nvidia 390.87 ( GTX 1050TI - it's a gaming laptop )

I'll keep fighting with it tomorrow for a bit - it's 2am now :(
Not helped by the fact it looks like the servers are still having issues, not that I've got close to actually connecting to one yet.

Avoid wine 4.0rc1 for now. I'm using the 3.21 version at present. Also, be patient - the planet shaders bit can take a while (about 1 minute on my gtx960).You're using a quite old NVIDIA driver, try 396.54 or the 410 versions.

I've been using wine 4.0rc1 without issues. But if other people are seeing problems - please let me know as I'll submit a fix to Wine ASAP. 4.0 will become the new stable and it would be great if we could run ED on it.
