the FSS, watching paint dry....

How can you complain about it being terribly boring if you apparently can't even be bothered to finish mapping out the controls for it?

I think this is rather the OP's point.
I have done the FSS key in mapping and I have hated it pretty comprehensively since I first tried it.

But the biggest faults are the nerf of the discovery scanner and the two HUD modes.
Restore Scanner to its original functionality and just have one HUD mode, then rest of changes can stay.

Still won't be using FSS scanner, it's tedious.

It's like Christmas dinner and sprouts. When I was five, I explained to my parents that I didn't like them. When I was ten, after five more years of choking them down, I raised the subject again. I think it was the year I turned sixteen that I finally cracked and explained that although it had become a running annual joke within the family, I was no longer prepared to ruin my Christmas dinner by forcing myself to eat a vegetable that I found disgusting. It was perhaps another four or five years before the first year that they didn't still appear on my plate for me to leave.

So yeah, by about 2038 there might be some acceptance that actually, you're just not a big fan of it.

That's it. There are times I would choose to use it for sure. Sadly, that's the option that was disregarded.

Just be glad it wasn't boiled okra.

Well next job is to find some way to automate it :). It being full screen will make that so much easier :). Screen parsing for the win!

Hogwash. It's like riding a bike or ice skating, neither of which are all that enticing the first couple times you try it. However, once you figure it out, it isn't that bad, and once you've had practice and get really good at it, you'll find you are having way more fun than when you were falling down on your behind every five seconds.

But then like riding a bike most people do it for a bit to get fit. But end up with it being left in the garage or shed then its used for just the few days in summer when it's nice enough weather you actually want to ride it.
And the skating analogy requires you to have to travel to an ice rink or frozen lake, which is something only someone with plenty of time on their hands could do frequently.

Most of us have lives and while I like exploring the galaxy in ED it can take weeks to get to Colonia or Sagittarius A*. Last thing I need is that time increased, or to return with little reward for the effort.

It wasnt supposed to be equivalent, it is gameplay vs pressing one button. Nothing is equivalent to that, and it blew. You may as well have removed it and just auto-scan on entering a system.

Pressing one button to get the system map and flying around the system to get the surface data got replaced by pressing a lot of buttons.

And in addition to that now all scanned systems are known to all CMDRs.
And all the data get magically discovered if you are in close proximity of the object.
And now the FSS shows you what objects are in the system after the honk. Honk and you know if there is a ELW.
And the detailed surface scan now has infinite range and is instant on click.

The new system a big step in the direction of "auto-scan on entering a system".

All this new stuff in a new mode that disconnects the player from flying a space ship and puts the player into a purple haze cloud something.

Something about the FSS and DSS I don't understand; I was under the impression that the DSS, with the probes, was responsible for finding permanent POI's on the surfaces of planets. But, the FSS scans for the same POI's...so what's the point of the DSS if not for the 'first mapped' tag? Am I missing something?

The FSS tells you if a planet has PoIs, but not where they are. You have to use the DSS to pinpoint the PoIs. The FSS gives the same level of information as the previous DSS, the new one has a different job, replaces the old one in all ships. The title still makes sense, since it provides even more information (and a new tag).

The FSS tells you whether there are POIs or not. The DSS tells you where on the surface they are. The reason being that it helps to know whether a planet has POIs before you commit to flying there to probe it.

Sprouts are fantastic when not overcooked, steamed for 15 minutes is perfect. Or roasted with bits of bacon.

MMMMMM Sprouts.

I recall reading something a while back that some peoples dislike of sprouts is due to genetics.

For my part being scottish I just drown anything green in gravy.

On topic: FSS is lame.

Yeah I hate their horrible taste genes :D

There is a gene that causes people with it to dislike the taste of cruciferous vegetables, of which sprouts are a prime example: https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2006/09/060918165721.htm

All joking aside I had actually heard that. Trouble is, guess what my favourite veg is?

I also love cauliflower, in fact just typing that has given me an insane craving for cauliflower cheese. So much for science :D

I can accept that some people like sprouts. Really, I can. I'm 47 now though and I'm pretty sure that if I was ever going to acquire a taste for them, it would have happened.

Read the above and substitute the word 'FSS' for 'sprouts'.

If you're still going to patronise me by trying to tell me what you think I'll like, read it again. Keep reading it until your eyes are bleeding.

At the risk of pointing out the glaringly obvious, I actually have a far better idea of what I like than you. Amazing I know.

Oh, so the FSS is even more of a god-honk than I originally thought?

I resemble that. :(

Incidentally I've had a chest infection for over a week now. Bought some more medicine earlier to try to shift the blighter, took one dose and lost the spoon, so I'm currently drinking Benylin from the bottle. This has nothing to do with the FSS, or my dislike of sprouts, I just thought you might like to take a moment to marvel at my glamorous lifestyle.

Thanks for reminding me. I need to refill my meds, after having been stuck out out in the frozen plains...

I don't know how console players have enough buttons, but as a PC player using an Xbox controller I have found that I can map all the new functions quite logically onto my controller.

I'd love to be able to spend $10k on a setup like Exigeous has, but failing that, spending £30 on an Xbox controller makes the experience much less confusing than relying on the keyboard for everything.

There are a number of people I know at defense contractors who want to know how you got your stuff... they are not buying the in-video explanations. :)

Ah, thanks guys. That makes total sense now. I appreciate you both answering and not making fun of me, as I'm a little hesitant on asking questions that might be obvious if I didn't know.
