the FSS, watching paint dry....

Does that FSS thing work then? I pressed lots of buttons but it didn't do much.
The FSS only works in supercruise. You need to bind the new functions if you have a custom controls profile: enter/exit fss, look around, zoom in/out and adjust frequency. If you have not "honked" the system yet, there is a binding to do that in the FSS as well. There should be a little tutorial that pops up on the first time, you can bind a key to show it later again. Don't confuse the FSS (every ship has it) with the DSS (module to buy) - the DSS can be activated anywhere (at minimum supercruise speed) as well but is only useful in orbit of a planet.

I don't like how it throws you out of the game and into a mini game. It really, really destroys the immersion.
It destroys the immersion of flying a spacship from the first person perspective or it destroys the immersion of flying a space ship with useful technology like a virtual surround screen?
I see it as a kind of mix between the cockpit perspective and system map, you can't control your ship while in the system or galaxy map either. The transition between FSS and normal cockpit is even more seamless than switching to the system map (with a short loading screen in between).
The speed limit is annoying but necessary in my opinion, it would be more annoying if you have to try to catch moving signals.

This gives a nice overview: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hXXe7422OYE (official FDev "pilots training" video).

As others already mentioned:

You need a bit of keybindings.
Then you need to be in super cruise with throttle at 0%.
Press the button to activate the FSS.
Press the button to make the initial honk - energy pulse to establish the orbital plane and find all the things in the system. Those found things will be shown as "blue blobs".
Now you adjust the frequency spectral thingy at the bottom to the desired setting and look around for blue blobs. If the frequency set below matches the object, then the blue blob will have a white solid circle - otherwise it's a white dotted circle. It might require a bit of aiming, but not that much.
Now press the zoom button. If the blue blob is an USS or a planet/moon you will have now scanned it and got all information the FSS will give you.
If it is a planet-moon system, then you will get presented more blue blobs on their orbit around the main blue blob. Adjust the frequency accordingly and zoom in on every blue blob.

The FSS will show you where frequencies are - so just select on and then move around and zoom in on white solid circle blue blobs until that frequency is marked as resolved (no wave pattern anymore). Go on to the next frequency wave pattern.

Moreover, how else could it be done? The UI would be a mess if it had to mix with the HUD and that's all the cue you have that this is a "minigame" rather than part of the "real world" experience.

Sure, if there's legs, then you could get up to the other console and play it on a ui built smaller in the in-game UI, then walk back, however this would mean "You have to be at zero throttle to use this mode" would be a cemented in necessity and several are REALLY upset at this being the case when the restriction isn't mechanically required for "immersion". Imagine how heads would 'splode if they found out that they argued away space legs for being above zero throttle (therefore kicked out of SC with damage when too close to a body) in FSS mode...

Absent any information, it's usually a good idea to find a good reason WHY the "dumb decision" was made then argue how to keep that reason alive but make the implementation better. If you presume "dumb decision" is all it was, then your solution will be based on a lie and therefore be unworkable.

1) Multicrew can use the FSS mode with this change fairly easily fitting current world building paradigms
2) Elite feet will make the UI "REALLY real" without ripping out any prior expectations like "going at a velocity".

Then open your ship and invite a Spock.

Not that I see myself as Kirk. Doesn't really matter what Sci-Fi franchise is used. The difference between pilot/captain and the person on the backseat with the map is the important thing.

And my preferred exploration ship is the DBX - so no place to invite anybody. (Not that I would want to, but that doesn't matter).

All that said, your suggestion is good and certainly something other players might want to consider. :)

Until a device is invented that can match frequency patterns to blue blobs or allows me to see blue blobs as HUD overlay while flying around in SC I will have to do basic pattern recognition myself. :)

I'm using both the FSS and the new surface scanner excessively during my last 19KLy. What exactly did you say was broken with the FSS?

You know how quotes work, right?
I quoted Cmdr da-wae saying the new systems don't work. If you want to know what doesn't work you should ask HIM, not ME. It's not a difficult concept, but it's kinda fundamental to the whole 'discussion board' thing.

Never said the new systems didn't work. I said they "barely work" - as in the feature is new and not super refined yet - will probably have some UI / configuration headaches.

I'd appreciate if you didn't put words in my mouth.

I've been doing "parallax discovery", and flying off to promising looking dots in the distance, which is hugely satisfying to me :)

Even better is that the auto-discovery part of the FSS means that I am able to zip through even complex sub-systems at about 10c and have all the objects resolved, which is absolutely fantastic [haha] Of course, if I see something I like the look of on the way through, I can stop and sight-see or bombard the planets with ordnance, I mean use probes to discover geologics etc.

It breaks up the monotony of having to use the FSS for it's original purpose very nicely. I'm not entirely sure this was the original purpose of the design, but I am having fun with it, which is a good thing :)
