Games that should be remade.

When Sid Meier re-made "Pirates!", the original of which was on my all time best games ever list (the new one replaced it ;)) - I wondered if it was a sign of how the industry might be going full circle.

In the beginning, we had simple games, that, short of the 5 minute spectrum 48k tape loading times, were very playable, because they were simple.... such as Elite.

Then we went a bit mad and started having games so complicated you needed a thick manual to get into them.

And now, as the modern attention span drifts again, we have simplicity again (because games and manuals have to fit in a DVD case?).

So what old games were crammed into 48k (or whatever) of memory, and could be born again with a touch of new graphicry and some minor gameplay tweaks?

oldie but goldie, "Hey Hey 16k"

http://www2.b3ta.com/heyhey16k/

All my favourites kind of evolved into 32bit equivalents - except Elite

I still play a few 8-bit classics under emulation now and again, umm, mostly Exile and Elite. Geoff Crammonds masterful "Revs" became a 32-bit sim, and all the old platformers evolved into FPS's, which is all I would've wished for back in the day...

Nope, sorry for the useless post, but there's only one classic I'm still waiting to be updated...

Oh yes, but while we all wait patiently for Elite IV... Here's a question:

Do you think the ORIGINAL elite, given the same sort of treatment as "Pirates!" - in which little was changed, could stand up today and enthrall a new generation? (I mean it will always be playable by those who can remember the original).

Having played "Oolite" - If you've heard of it - the only real thing I would really appreciate in the original is more complex economy. Even more complex than Frontier. Becoming a successful trader should take skill and judgement... some deals will go sour, some will go better than expected...

I was kind of disapointed with Oolite - not so much by the game - it's a great tribute - but by my inability to enjoy it as much as I thought I would. I think it's the same problem I have with all space games - FEII raised the bar so high, it's a tough act to follow. As much as I loved the original - and I mean I PLAYED that game - my fondest memories will always be of Frontier. It had me ranting for months before it was released, and turned me into a thin pasty recluse as soon as it came out (quiet bloke, kept to himself, didn't seem to go out much etc.). A game so great my girlfreind left me, and I was late for work everyday and half-asleep to boot. I used to read the manual when I couldn't be playing. It was a life-controling obsession, that nearly destroyed me. In retrospect, thank God there were no special missions, or I may never have come through it.

They don't make 'em like that no more.

That they don't the only game to have made me want to play it over and over again is FE2 I played FFE but it never had quite the same feel to it that FE2 did. Just not as smooth as it were. if they wanted to replicate a game for winxp then I would have to go for FE2. The original was a classic that helped form the games we play at the moment but FE2 was the first game that made me say wow.

Elite 4 has enough of a following amongst us older gamers, computer users that it is more or less guarenteed to get to number 1. If a WIN Xp compatible version of FE2 or FFE were made available and that were reliable I know for a fact those numbers could be increased reasonably well.

Well, apart from the obvious one here there are several other games that I still love to play and think they should remake with more sparkly graphics etc.
Dungeon Keeper (the original not DK2)
Master of Magic (Civilization with magics)
Colonization

As for really retro ones they should remake, Saber Wulf was fantastic. Dizzy games would be interesting to have new graphics and there was once a game released by 'Skips' (the crisp) where you were the motercycle guy and just randomly drove around and went in to peoples houses. Very weird but so very very addictive. Can't remember what it was called though. :(

**edit**

Oh oh, and Birth of the Federation. Fantastic star trek game that, with a few (ok many) tweaks, could become one of the greatest games ever (IMO). :)

The old Microprose game?

You are in luck then. There is an new version coming, though it is carrying the Civilization IV name. Something like Civilization IV: Colonization if I remember correctly.

There is a java remake of colonization, or there was a few years ago. It's quite good as well.

edit: it's called FreeCol i think.

I would love to see a proper remake of Syndicate by bullfrog, not syndicate wars, which was pretty poor in comparison.

I have FreeCol but couldn't get it to work properly. I will keep an eye out for the Civ version though.

Aww man. Syndicate! Agreed. That was awesome (and Wars was poor).

God I loved that game (and yes Wars was ... not as good ;) ), fabulously Peter Molyneux has expressed an interest in remaking it.

If he and EA could get together ...

Hell, even a relativetly "quick" Live/PSN update would do. :)

Speaking of which, anyone else up for an update of Zarch/Virus on Live/PSN?

Will Wright (Sim City, The Sims) has a new game out called Spore.

Didn't he do something similar called Sim Earth ?

I know Will Wright and The Sims games have nothing to do with Frontier, But Will obviously thought Sim Earth needed to be remade

I know the game you are talking about I seem to remember there were "oil slicks" in places and you could pick up special tyres to get past them and some bike parts to make you go faster. I seem to remember it was "dream" based or something because when you "died" it said something about waking yourself up...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Action_Biker

thats the game.

I do think that a simple commercial modernisation of FE2 would be a great game. Something up to trully modern commercial standards for graphics and a nice slick interface. The game itself was pretty solid, a little buggines removed, and I reckon even today it could stand on its own two legs, perhaps as a something to get the hype going for Elite 4 when frontier felt ready to give some actual news.

Whats the betting that David Braben has got such a thing hanging around on a hard drive somewhere :) If it was my program Id have been tempted to create such a thing just for my own personal satisfaction :D Surely after lostwinds, they could see there would be a nice little earner in a simple update of FE2 maybe digital download only? £15 a shot? surely they could easily cover costs with that, making it clear that its Just an update not elite 4 and its just for "fun".

That idea was already discussed in a thread in the Elite/Frontier section.

I'll look and put a link to it here.
Found it : http://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php?t=774

The end result was that the general opinion was that, yes it would be a great idea and nice to see, but only as long as it didn't take away any time from Elite 4.

If DB has got such an update to FE2/FFE on a hard drive somewhere, it's maybe his little secret or pet project (No offense meant DB).

The impression I get from the lostwinds development story is that frontier is a "creative" place where they do stuff that only ever gets seen internally, pet projects just to see what they can do to act as a spring board to other ideas. It just seems the sort of thing that could easily have happened lets see what it would look like where do want to go with it etc etc..

Rocket Jockey aka Rocket Arena (in unfinished PC remake)

Great gamplay, three modes, race, war or play ball. Sit on a rocket, use the grappling hook. And keep on turning and timing it just right!

Here is a link to the Wiki, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rocket_Jockey

And an effort has been made to bring it back to the PC -> http://www.solar-ray.org/index.php?id=rocket

And the Wii Wish link: http://www.wiirally.com/wii-wish-rocket-jockey/

Although I think this game as something special that would appeal to the Nintendo Wii Ware public, and that is great fun in gameplay. With WiFi option as a great extra, it could be the next big thing.

greetings,
Grincer
