Allow use of pre 3.3 Advanced Discovery Scanner

I quite enjoyed reading the isolated posts from Gregg Rulz, and I don't see the doom at all, either for Elite Dangerous or in those posts, there's a positivity in me today since Will Flanagan posted an acknowledgement on the problems facing players using FSS... so all will be well... soon, probably!

The doom meter doesn't show actual doom levels I'm afraid.

Yeah but he posted from the point of view of fixing it not allowing any choice over using it. Sadly.
We all have our 'perfect' world and unfortunately they simply can't coexist, a compromise is always the way to go with both sides 'feeling' that they have a good deal, in my perfect world the Sys map once honked (the honk would provide no credits or badges of first discovery) would provide black dots and I would have a choice on what mode to use to fill it out... the old travel and scan would take longer but I'd visit each planet for bombing and landing, or, if I were in a hurry I could go to the FSS and be done in a few minutes and get the hell outta there... that would not affect anyone else except me and perhaps a mate in wing while sits and keeps asking "are you done yet? What about now?..."

Max would rather the universe were destroyed than anyone be able to use the ADS again...
And other players would have their preferences.
If only ED had have asked me instead of just blundering forward, I'd have told them the right thing to do, put them on the right track, it would have cost them nothing... it's far too late now, too much blood has been spilt in the name of progress... oops sorry I thought I was G'kar then!

It is not too late for FD to introduce a spiritual replacement for the ADS as well as fix the mess that they made of the FSS and Space-Golf. The mess fixing will take substantially longer though, at least if they do it properly. FD should have never gone down the mini-game route, that rarely (if ever) results in good mechanics.

This is not true. I have said many a time, that I am fine for the old ADS be back in the game (under conditions), no matter how much I despise it.

How do you add new mechanics if they are not mini-games. Its the only way to add them. Like the new core mining mini-game.

Integrate them into the main cockpit display, for a start. Then give them a failure condition, or at least levels of success. Finally, make them require some level of skill and/or intellectual engagement.

The new mining functionality seems to be much closer to this (from the description, not personally tried it) than the 'blue-blob' and 'infinite probe spam' exploration 'tools'.

It would still be a mini-game.

You didn't answer the question...
If you mean if the ADS was built in. Well it would destroy the whole reason of what the FSS is for me. The FSS is a means to discover what's there. If I have already discovered what's there with the built in ADS what's the point in discovering it all over again. It would kill the mechanic for me as it would feel pointless.

No, I meant if the ADS was an optional module, just as it was.

As long as it's mutually exclusive, I can live with that. But if you are talkimg about having the old ADS work alongside the FSS as an optional module, then that would be a no. I would not like that and wouldn't want it in the game. That would devalue the game for me, just like multicrew does. So it would effect my enjoyment of the game as a whole in a negative way.

You still haven't answered the question... and multicrew is not something optional, the tab is always there.

Why should the two mechanics be mutually exclusive in terms of availability? As I see it there is no good reason for that to be the case.

The only change as a result of the proposed ADS replacement (as an optional module) would be the population of the topographical map for unexplored systems (c/f what currently happens for explored systems with the FSS). FSS mechanics for scanning said bodies would be unaffected (with or without it fitted). The main difference would be explorers would have the option of near body scanning based exploration like they have had since V1.0 rather than being forced to deal with the FSS. FSS scanning may still be required for detection of some things unless the explorer in question is incredibly lucky (or unlucky as the case may be) and stumbles upon them.

Explorers that just use the FSS would still notionally have the better end of the deal (from a tangible gains perspective) - notionally faster mapping (discovery kudos and detailed body information are only granted with near-body/FSS scans) and they would be able to use the additional slot for other modules that may have greater utility for them.

Claiming existence of feature X devalues the game just because anyone personally sees no value in it is not good reasoning. Multi-crew is completely optional in nature but the general effect on game balance is perhaps debatable since it is mutually exclusive with the Wing mechanic (seemingly primarily for balancing reasons). Whether talking about Wings or Multi-Crew though, fundamentally they do not change the value of other aspects of the game for those that either do not use them or do not choose to be put in a situation where they can be targeted by those using them. However, balancing concerns would not apply in the case of the proposed ADS replacement for reasons already pointed out.

I have explained a plethora of times why I would not be happy with it. Read them instead of ignoring them.
