Interesting. People sure seem to feel it’s their god given right to play the way they want to and if you dare to do anything that impacts that they get wadded panties.

Don’t worry, I’m sure there will be plenty of “paper ships” to pick on.

Folks can do as they like. It's the ones who opine on the subject of Open Play and then admit to never participating in the mode.

I’ve been playing open since I started and so far so good. I’d not be a tough kill for anyone that had a focused combat ship. I know it. I’d accept it too if it were situational like trying to take my cargo and I made a run for it.

If someone just descends and kills me for the fun of it I’d probably feel no compunction in blocking that player rather than retreating to solo entirely.

I got nothing against PvP players. Just don’t have much respect for the ones that hang out to kill newbs for sport either.

Cant believe I’ve got to repeat myself but here goes. In my opinion, not stated as a fact but an opinion, where a gang get together to find a lesser armed, lesser experienced opponent and get real life fun out of that, I find that questionable.

This is the bit I question. People keep saying it’s just a game and it is a game, but getting your (not you directly but the general ‘you’) kicks by ganging up on weaker individuals, to me is questionable. That is not name calling, that is opinion stating.

To explain why I find it questionable, I have used analogies. That is how many people explain their position, to help others understand their point, not necessarily to convert them or prove them wrong but to explain their own position.

Someone may use an analogy to explain to me how getting real life jollies from ganging up on people in games, is nothing like ganging up on people out of games to get real life jollies, I may understand it and change my opinion.

I would welcome the attempt, but I’ve read nothing yet that alters my opinion. That could change.

As of yet I’ve simply been told I don’t know what I’m talking about, I’m contributing nothing, I’m a troll and I’ve been questioned on my right to discuss these matters having admitted I don’t play in open. Given that last one, perhaps we better watch what we say about the mechanics of ships in space because I doubt very much that many of us have been in space.

Yesterday my 49 y/o GF had her first PvP experience in another game. She didn't attack them first, she was defending herself.

After she beat the out of the 2 gankers, she said to me: "NPCs are boring".

Ganking in all PvP games is perfectly normal passtime. There's a very small percentage of sealclubbers that do it only for salt. The wast majority is doing it only to provoke some response from the law enforcers (in this game from SPEAR, GUARD and others). Ganking per se isn't the problem. The lack of ED's support for PvP is.

Edit: it's not true that I never ganked anyone. I never ganked anyone in this game. Yet.

How long have you been playing for? Sounds like you've not been attacked by a player. Why would you automatically jump to blocking them?

Presuming they don't communicate before the attack (because why would you if your goal was to kill) would you try to find out why they attacked? Of course, they don't have any obligation to tell you or even tell the truth but I don't think either possibility automatically condones a strong justification for blocking them.

Overwhelming force resulting in swift victory is always desirable for the attacker. I'm not even talking about war here but sport and games in general. It's like having plays in team sports designed to catch the defending team off guard.

Remember, unrestricted PvP in Open is by design. There's also no matchmaking. If you don't like that or find it "questionable" then tough luck.

Winning is fun. Working to better your ship and yours skills, along with those of your friends, and then executing on that successfully is fun. Sometimes, the games the thing.

Honestly you should get out of Solo Play and give Open Play a whirl. Go shoot some people. Gang up on someone with friends. Have a blast. You might surprise yourself.

Geeze. No one should feel actions within the rules of a game (based on the lore and it's settings I'll just quickly drop here) are "questionable." And who cares about their motivations? The game doesn't.
