ANNOUNCEMENT Gamescom Reveals - Fleet Carrier Details

So it seems like it's Carriers plus purpose-specific support vessels? Interesting.

As for the 500ly range making it too easy to travel, I imagine it will be much too expensive in time/resources to use it just to nip out to Colonia in less jumps. i suspect the amount of work required to do those jumps will mean - rightly - they are difficult to move, but worth it for certain purposes for some commanders/squadrons.

Isn't that because large vessels are unable to defend against shutdown fields? Hence all those capital ships and stations dropping like flies early in the invasion. A fleet carrier would be no different.
I'd settle for a base I can park next door that stocks anti-good weapons and does rearm/repair so I can go light on the FSD drive and use the power elsewhere.

The quote you truncated was:

"Schedule jumps from the Galaxy Map when you want and from wherever you are in the galaxy."

Sorry for the quote mangling, haven't figured out how to quote in quote in the new forum yet.

Anywho - "Schedule" is the keyword here. Not "execute". It might simply mean that I can schedule a jump at any time, but it'll be executed anywhere between the daily tick and when hell freezes over.

As QA asks, loads of questions here regarding support vessels. Will the support ships actually do anything or are they there just to incidate to other players what the carrier's primary purpose is?

I mean, can the Mining Support vessel actually mine stuff? Does it have a cargo bay? Class 4 Mining Lasers? Limpets for sale?

I was very skeptical that there would be carriers - or anything else this year, for that matter - for solo players, so I'm as surprised as I am pleased. And I'm pretty pleased.

I suspect the decision to make carriers available to solo players was made after the carriers were designed, which is why solo players will have sixteen pads to choose from; still, better too many than too few.

will we be able to make more that one jump whenever we wan't, and of course if we have enough fuel for that, or we will have to schedule where we wanna go, and the jump will happen on the server reboot at Thursdays like what happens today with Gnosis?

500LY looks far, but how often can they jump? And until we know the fuel cost, it's pointless guessing. It's unlikely to make travel much if any faster, unless you wanted to transport your fleet to colonia or sag a* or wherever... Mobile bases for DW# maybe...

QUESTION - Will we fly these ourselves, or will they be like the Gnosis where we dock with them, but they are flown by an NPC crew to whom we give orders via an interface in our regular ship? I'm guessing the latter, since I can't imagine being able to fly what essentially is a megaship.

Not that I'll ever be able to afford one, LOL.

So I'm guessing when they arrive in system, they'll be close to the jump in point, probably as a poi/signal source, so that your approved commanders can find it. Wonder if they'll be in game when you're not, as what happens when you go offline when a buddy is docked with your carrier?

Also wonder if there will be some kind of mechanic to interact with rival carriers, sort of like what is done with mega ships--steal jump resources, for example?

Lots of things to ponder here, but still pretty psyched.
