This has been driven into the ground and broken off multiple times, but the issue is that more than half the player base doesn't want to play along with the "shiver me timbers, arrrgghh.. I'll have ye cargo now matey" RPing. They didn't intend to buy a PvP game and run from pirates or be pirates themselves. The farce of an economy doesn't support open trade, it's not profitable since profit can be considered as a comparison of Cr/min vs what you could be making doing something else, if you even care about credits in the 1st place, which many don't, so it comes down to the fact that not everyone in the galaxy wants the game direction to be focused on enhancing a mode they don't participate in. Some do though, but as has been said, it's more of an emergent game play. Even though factions can get their own power and systems, the game doesn't really urge anyone to do anything about it.
The only info we know about the player base is that the majority by a long way, play in Open. Which was stated by Sandro I think.
So over half not wanting it, is total hearsay. We do know that the people that don't want it, are much more likely to state that on this forum.
I would certainly agree that WAY over half of this forum doesn't want PVP.
IF the game ever changed and forced playing in a single-mode, you have to understand that the game we have now, WOULD NOT BE THAT GAME.
The current game we have doesn't work and if you were to flip a forced mode on people it still wouldn't work.
However, IF ( and its a monumentally huge IF ) the game was changed to give PVP more of a place and force players into an environment where PVP was likely. The game would be changed in an incredible way to support it. Even FDEV would not be that nieve.
We are looking at
Career roles both legal and criminal.
Real risks for both sides but with rewards to counter.
Proper clan management.
Economy balance and player assets.
Balancing of ships for both trade and war. Trade ships would become tougher and warships ( PVP builds ) would be nerfed to reduce the incredible delta that currently exists.
Instancing and matchmaking.
Exploits.
Combat logging.
The list is so big, that I have no illusion it is going to happen anytime soon. Maybe in 2020 if this patch is as big as they want us to believe.
People in their mind want EVE with an ED cockpit ( or StarCitizen ).
Done right, a non PVP player could exist in a world where they were protected by Lawful PVPers.
What we have no is just so full of holes and issues that its too late to fix PVP in this build of ED.
All of this is IMHO but im also totally right.
