Do "purple-haired heroes" scare everyone into Solo?

FDev did not say that most players play in open. They said Open has more players than other modes. However, there is only one open mode and an almost limitless number of other modes. If you add the non-open modes I’m not sure they contain less players than open.

Plurality is not the same as majority. Especially when there is only 1 way to opt in and a very large number of ways to opt out.

In this case open could have 5% of the players in it and still be “the most popular mode” as the other 95% of players could be spread across many other modes avoiding open.

People choosing which mode they play in is as close a popular vote as you can get. Not really smart too make them play the other way unless you can convince them they want to play the other way. Point is - if you don't see players in open, there's either a problem with the matchmaking algos or there simply aren't enough players who want to play that mode.
I find it kinda funny that people believe forcing players to play in open WILL make people play in open. I highly doubt that.
It would be an interesting experiment. Frontier could release a single "Open-only" CG and see what happens. It might be a bit tricky to code, as it would have to detect mode-switching (otherwise I could jump into Solo for SC and back to Open for normal space cargo delivery). Perhaps have perishable rare cargo that can only shows up in markets in Open and spoils if you switch modes.

BTW, I'm not suggesting that ALL CGs become Open-only, but rather that Frontier introduce Open-only CGs. One week might be an Open-only CG, the next might be all-mode CG. Considering that we haven't had ANY CGs in months, what's to lose?

Jerks and jokes!

Is it wrong that, while flying my Corvette, I explode pirates in Eagles and Sideys with the specific hope of seeing that line?

The majority of players don't agree with your conclusions. :p

Not quite. They almost definitely referred to Open, Solo and PG. That still doesn't mean that Open has more than 50% of the active player base. Most people would still play in Open if it's 40/30/30.

I remember the days when CG's used to be very much adversarial, there would be (at least 2) kicking off at once for imperials & the feds with blockades on both sides trying to prevent the other from winning.

It was truly great fun, CG's are genuinely the place for this kind of play & I really enjoyed the cat & mouse game, even as a trader. It's how I learned how to evade (almost) all interdictions.

that doesn’t make it wrong. Fortunately correctness is not determined by consensus. We simply don’t have the information to determine if I’m right because the only real authority on the subject would rather ambiguous and misleading replies.

that’s EXACTLY what I said. I was just pointing out that their use of “most” is misinterpreted by most who read that statement. In this case “most” does not imply “majority “ as many think it does. It is (probably) a deliberately misleading statement.

And Mobius feels desolated.

Unfortunately yes, by now it does. I met plenty of people there till squadrons were introduced. Then each and any squadron soon had their own private group. Even squadrons which list as "purely PvP and open oriented" created their own PGs.

So squadrons and their specific private groups drained Möbius a lot.

Wow. Never considered that. :(

Sorry I read your post as Open/Solo/PG1/PG2...PG500, etc.

Really? Well that's kinda sad.

Experimenting is for prototyping the game design. By now it's probably down to that the idea of having coop and competitive in one bucket simply doesnt work.

@OP: The instancing, the one-sided CG design and the different modes are the reason ED's potential is held back. FDev finally needs to add some game mechanics around PvP and make it viable - and no, PP does not count in its current state.
