Do "purple-haired heroes" scare everyone into Solo?

I don’t see being good at video games as an essential life skill so playing my own game in solo in a way that’s fun and entertaining for me while all the “good” video game players fight it out in open is perfectly acceptable and
Ok this I strongly disagree with. The PvE challenge in this game is weak sauce and borders on broken in some places, the fact that people try, and even succeed, to get some enjoyment out of it should not be taken as an implicit endorsement of the status quo.

Translation: those who disagree with my opinion are dumb poopy-heads.

Wait, I've got it, what if we all had purple hair? :)

That's how they are though. I don't doubt that there are PvP enthusiasts who want challenging combat against other players but that's not what the gaudy-hairs want, no matter what they claim. So if FD provided some proper PvP content it wouldn't reduce ganking in the least.

True enough. The grotesque holo-me tendency is quite telling, I think. It comes from the same desire to break and stretch the game beyond its implied intentions. I say that without judgment, though, but understanding the motivation is key here.

It's also why those raider kits and pirate skins are largely a failure. Fdev clearly hoped these would be adopted wholesale by these troublemaker groups but they're just not interested in playing along in any capacity. Quite the opposite.

To what information do you have access to declare the pirate and raider skins a failure?

FDev did not say that most players play in open. They said Open has more players than other modes. However, there is only one open mode and an almost limitless number of other modes. If you add the non-open modes I’m not sure they contain less players than open.

This is missing the point, and that's probably Sandro's fault. There's functionally no such thing as an "Open" player and a "private" player, and a "solo" player; nearly everyone plays all the modes and swaps between them as they see fit. Almost certainly most players play in Open most of the time, meaning at any given time, open mode is likely to have the most people playing it. Also almost certainly most players play Open some of the time, meaning it is by definition A Mode That They Play (not necessarily to the exclusion of all others), meaning Open is the most popular mode because the majority of players "are" Open Players.

But the overwhelming majority of THAT overwhelming majority could still be comprised of A-B haulers who default to Open but switch modes when things get annoying, inconvenient, or scary.

It's not necessary to split hairs about whether we're talking about a "simple majority" or a "plurality" of """""""""""Open Players"""""""""", because without a lot of additional information it's a nearly meaningless concept to begin with. It doesn't tell us anything about what the playerbase does, or what they want, or WHY they want or do it.

Any efforts to debunk a fairly benign (if misguided) statement by Frontier/Sandro is just ceding the whole conversation to Mode chauvinists.

I'm beginning to think the biggest griefer in this game is CMDR Net Code. Even with just a few people in an instance, this rubber-banding and other "side effects" are pretty terrible on PC.
Unless you live close to him, then it works great.

Ahh, good old p2p

But you must admit, it's interesting to consider that Solo mode (and PG) can kill Open mode, but Open mode cannot kill Solo mode (assuming Solo mode exists). After all, if I'm the only CMDR using Solo mode, it's the same as if EVERYONE is using Solo mode, yet if I'm the only one using Open mode..... You see what I'm saying?
I see what you are saying . Then it comes down to knowing the game you are buying and understanding it's features. If I buy iracing expecting a single player career with NPC cars to race against I am gonna be dissapointed. That is on me not the game.

That's why protest by killing newbs and stuff is kind of idiotic. If people get their enjoyment from PvP they must make sure that everyone participating is enjoying it as well. Lots of people are playing CGs / visiting Engineers in Solo. It wasn't always like that. So if you would end up being the only one using Open, don't blame the people in Solo.

That's the interesting feature of ED. In other games the purple-hairs are feared; people grab children and run indoors when they ride into town. In ED they are just figures of fun; you can bait them for as long as you find it amusing and then avoid them when it becomes tedious.

That's why there is more "make people play in Open" salt than "a griefer exploded me" salt. They don't like the status they have in ED.
