ANNOUNCEMENT Community Update (22/10)

I dont think anyone here whos paying attention actually believes the "new era" of Elite will launch on its planned date...when something like fleet carriers has been delayed almost..what.. a full year? And even the smallest of updates...UPDATES... break the entire game.

I dont know what is actually going on behind closed doors...but whatever it is...its not good...and its definitely not anything to be "excited" about.

I think it's people like you who need to be paying attention or need an injection of logic. Frontier have made it quite clear numerous times that most of the Elite Dangerous team are now working on the New Era, certainly since Beyond Q4. The investors have been told it's a "refresh of the franchise" while the development time of New Era will be bigger than the original Alpha release, sounds important right? Meanwhile Carriers was one of many bones thrown in with the free for everyone Beyond season and was along with the Ice Planet tech update postponed indefinitely, little development would have been performed during the Beyond season so your "year" delay is just a paper delay. A small team worked on the 2019 series of "minor updates" which has nothing to do with New Era. That's what's going on behind closed doors.

Isn´t "putting more effort into fixing things" the reason why we didn´t get Fleet Carriers in Q4 2018 but in "Q4 2019"?

No. Beyond was a season concentrating on fleshing out the core game play mechanics, a cynic might says its "fixing something" but in reality it's new content. It was decided that the extra funcationilty of the Ice Planet and Carrier detracted from that focus, ED had its largest ever dev team working on Beyond Q4 while at the same time New Era had gone into production development. I think it is quite clear there was a workload prioritisation. 2019 focus was/is actually the New Era, not "fixing things", Carriers were a surprise addition to the 2019 release plan of minor updates focussing on New Player Experience. This recent announcement of focussing on old bugs is a new direction. I guess we will find out soon in December what its scope is.

Well first of all i want to congratulate the person who wrote the announcement. It's very professional and because it's apologetic seems sincere. But what i actually can read is (and this is just my personal opinion) : "Elite community despite your screams in the forums all these years we manage to screw up the game at a level that we can't even apply a single update with new content. We called up some people from the initial dev team and beg them to come and help us. We hope to fix the mess in the next six months to a year. Until then good luck. And for the LEP's well, never pay something upfront."
Just a note. I don't refer to the developers at any capacity that they screw up the game. I am sure they did whatever they could to deliver. But i blame some people up in the hierarchy, pretty much overpaid accountants, which they don't have any idea of what they are doing, just seeing numbers in excel worksheets and usually screwing everything and always blaming everybody else.

Can you quantify "bug ridden mess"?

Well that is the thing, it would seem "bug ridden mess" is a bit of meaningless term in this case because its definition appears to be very much a personal thing and live in the eye of the beholder. Actual facts seem to point out to a developer record selling franchise who is still growing population after 5 years, hardly a typical characteristic of what someone could consider a "bug ridden mess". Unless you include in that definition reasonably successfull game franchises of course. I would normally associate "bug ridden mess" with a commercially failed product and/or probably abandoned or being heavily desserted, which is clearly not the case here (yet at any rate! :) ).

I guess we can all at least agree that there are bugs in the game that need fixing, no doubt of that, and that fixing those is quite likely to help support carriers and the new era.

I've really enjoyed my 1700 hours of ED. I feel though that FD have now abandoned the game.

Ever since Ten Cent came into FD, Elite Dangerous has been a minor consideration. I understand this from a purely business related point of view but this latest excuse of 'bug fixes' (for a second year) betrays the fact that ED is now regarded as being on life-support only.

Strange, but I logged in tonight really willing and happy to play...then logged out again. 'What's the point?', I asked myself.

I'll keep up with the forums but as far as playing the game again, I suspect it will be some time before I bother.

Thanks to all at FD for a wonderful VR experience over the years and incredible value for money in terms of cost/play-hours value. I just wish you would be honest for once and state, clearly and honestly, that ED has run its course and that it is now a minor consideration as part of FD's business plan. You can be so dishonest sometimes imo.

See you in a year, maybe...

Uhm...Did I miss something? The Community-Managers are quite active with regular Live Streams of an "Abandoned Game".

Yeah. Livestreams that say nothing and achieve even less. But go on enjoying them if you want.
Okay...Challenge accepted:

The OP-Post at the very beginning of this thread CLEARLY states that Elite: Dangerous is, from now on, officially ABANDONED. 🤦‍♀️

Oh wait a minute. I have to go to the basement...switching off the Servers.

Lol believe the propaganda.
100 in your dreams.

Beyond Q4 Aug 2018
https://forums.frontier.co.uk/threads/important-community-update.444800/
Let’s get started with Chapter Four content. As all of you know, our largest update of the year is in final development and will be available for players to get hands-on with in just a number of weeks (Some time in Q4).This will be the final update of 2018 and the Beyond season. The Beyond season was always something that we wanted to do in order to bring even more enhancements to the core experience of Elite and being able to dedicate a full development team (over 100 people!) for a full year of free content was specifically to gear ourselves up to support our long term vision for the game.

Overall staff growth at Frontier and ED team growth (ie ED staff not being moved to Planet Zoo etc) Summer 2018 plus ambition for future
https://wccftech.com/frontier-next-game-unveiled-late-2018/
What happened is we've become more visible, we've taken on around 50 people a year for the last few years, and that's been really good for us. We're in the new office which is really nice.

What it's meant is we've continued to support and nurture the existing franchises. Elite Dangerous has continued to grow, the team size is actually getting bigger. Planet Coaster has continued to be supported.
The plan was - beyond the current season for Elite, which is mostly announced - there are a lot of things that we will be announcing that are really exciting, some of which will be free, some of which will be paid.

The scope of New Era and dedication of team compared to that working on updates in 2019
https://forums.frontier.co.uk/threads/important-community-update-01-03.479122/
Back in August, we mentioned that the team had begun work on the next major era of Elite. We believe this will be a defining moment in the history of the game and it will be our biggest update yet.

We can understand that having a long wait for news can be frustrating, but we truly believe that this will be the single most impactful update for our community. Having a development team dedicated to this milestone is our continued and unwavering commitment to making Elite Dangerous the most authentic, ambitious, and expansive evolving space game in the world.

As well as the team of developers working on our next big milestone, we also have a smaller development team focused on adding to and improving the existing game between now and that time.

Well i don't think ED is dead. Personally i like the game and i wouldn't minded if Frontier comes and say ok this is the game that's all you have, no more updates no more new content. But all the false promises, all the lies, the luck of communication. Remember how many videos exist for the so called roadmaps, how many announcements for future content how many delays, how many bugs they ignore for so much time. It's not the game, it's the attitude.

Working for 2-3 years on their biggest Elite related release with the majority of a 100 people development team hardly sounds like abandonment.

The attitude of whome? FDev's or the community's?

Yes they messed up their own roadmap they published. Almost everyone was hypertraining about it and when FDev stated that they cannot hold up to the Roadmap, the Hype-Train crashed horribly resulting in a loud enragement. I cannot blame FDev for being silent about the things to come. They just want to avoid another fatal crash with hundreds of "victims".

So how would YOU manage this situation? You say something...wrong...You say nothing...wrong again...

That's plain shizophrenic.
