"The Outter Worlds"...

Jenner

I wish I was English like my hero Tj.
Strangely enough I've kinda hit a wall with the Outer Worlds. I was quite enjoying it for a dozen hours or so and then I just..... stopped. I dunno why, but now when I'm firing it up I get bored and just shut it down in 10 minutes. I think the combat is just too repetitive and tedious. I'm tired of killing mauraders and raptadons. I'm tired of the deluge of throw-away loot. I still love the story and writing, but the actual gameplay is boring me.

I think that many folks prais the game as they compare it to latest RPG titles like Fallout 76 or Andromeda that in general fell flat on their faces. If we look at OW through those then yes its the breath of fresh air and a ""phenomenon"in AAA industry.
Personally I find it just OK but nothing more than than that. And its not "me" as I still absolutely love Mass Effect 1-3, the Witcher, New Vegas and my latest discovery Final Fantasy but in OW I did not find any hook that would sucked me in as much. Actually not going to even finish the game :(

I agree. The fact that the 'main branches' of possible endings solely depend on your actions in one quest, that the final mission took me quite literally five minutes or so, that a main character is practically introduced at the very end with little to no reason to care, it all undermines the 'player agency and great story' a lot to me. Everything feels kinda stale, like they went through the motions with zero actual creativity or inspiration. You have the 'sneak/talk/shoot' options, your usual skill checks. You must go from A to B to do one of these three things, and upon return can trigger a dialogue skill check for more money to spend on generic items. You have the stuff people loved in New Vegas (a bunch of factions with reputations for each, the 'go undercover by looking like them' bits) but they seem forced, quite irrelevant and simply not as exciting as it was a generation ago. And while the side-quests at times have hints of moral ambiguity or depth, the main quest is straight-up good vs evil. Parvati is simply Firefly's Kaylee, the cute-but-socially-clumsy-engineer-uncomfortable-in-fancy-settings, with a single difference briefly touched upon.
she's not just a lesbian, she's even an asexual lesbian, how refreshing and modern! Not that it matters, it is just thrown out as a fact for no clear reason with again zero influence on anything.

It looks okay, it runs stable, the story is okay'ish, the combat is basic and almost okay'ish. There are roughly a handful of different opponents, none of them interesting or challenging. That this is being heralded as a great RPG and potential GOTY shows just how much RPGs are experiencing a draught again.

That's all it needs to be though, isn't it?
It's "Game of the year", not "Game of the decade". It's always relative comparison and relatively to anything currently available, it's pretty awesome, imho.

Tastes vary of course, but I would rank both Disco Elysium and RDR2 well above it... and that's just in the open-world RPG genre. 🤷‍♀️

If Otter Worlds ends up being GOTY then the poll is rigged IMO.

Well, disco Elysium may well be the greatest RPG ever made since Planescape Torment, but its production, artstyle and gameplay will always be just for the nichest of niche audiences.
And RDR2? Well, it came out more broken than Fallout 76, so if they manage to fix it before Christmas, then yes, otherwise nope.
On consoles, maybe. There the RDR2 is a clear winner, although on the other hand, I wouldn't really call it and RPG, right?

I dont think the production, art style and gameplay are particularly noteworthy in Outer Worlds either. And the cliche good vs evil story, the limited player agency, the stale general gameplay design, very limited types of opponents, the 'borrowing of influences', the short duration: all of it to me means it isn't just not GOTY, it isn;t even a decent AA(A) game at all. Its a decent attempt by a small studio, and I can recommend it for $29 or something.

Wait, you responded to this quote:

You really respond by saying 'that is all it needs to be'? How many GOTY are there gonna be this year?

All I'm saying (and I'm not trying to say you don't have a right to your opinion) is that it is most definitely the game with best reception. It doesn't have to be best in any category if it does everything at least well enough (which is does, according to most people) and works fine out of the box.

Nah, that would be Untitled Goose Game, which has been catapulted in mainstream culture via memes way beyond the gaming culture. So HONK that.

Nobody is arguing it should be GOTY, because that would be just silly.

I like the Otter Worlds (sorry, that's just what it's called now), and it's a very competent RPG, but that's all it is. Competent. It doesn't push any boundaries, it doesn't take any risks with dialogue or story, it's incredibly PC, and it's just Fallout By Numbers. Which is fine, if that's what you've been craving, but to say that an average & competent RPG should be GOTY precisely because of those qualities strikes me as a bit sad IMO. :(

None :)

To be honest I really wouldn't know what game to nominate for GOTY... 2019 has been quite poor in "big" game releases.

Disagree. 2019 has been a great year for games IMO. My empty wallet is testament to that fact. :(

Disco Elysium
Greedfall
I'd put NMS Beyond in there, as it's practically a whole new game.
RDR2

Those are just the ones off the top of my head that have been released this year. There's dozens of indie games that would be worth a mention too.

There's also Star Wars: Fallen Order coming out in a week's time, and FM2020 also.

That's because the current gaming drought made us lower our standards.

When I think of "game of the year" titles I think of games the caliber of Skyrim, The Witcher 3, Mass Effect 2, Fallout 3/NV, Kingdom Come Deliverance, etc...

Disco Elysium and Greedfall, while being good games, are nowhere near the same league. R2D2 would be on the same league and a likely worthy GOTY, but I play on PC so for me R2D2 doesn't count.

Are you one of the lucky ones chosen for alpha?

No, I've yet to even buy the game. Too many others to play first. Also don't pre-order games any more - been stung by that one too many times. :(

Honestly don't see a drought. That's my point. 🤷‍♀️

Um... RDR2 came out for PC on Tuesday. It's a PC game too now. 🤦‍♀️

And stop knocking R2D2 - that little robot has been through a lot! :ROFLMAO:

With Microsoft owning the company, I just can't see the incentive of me owning it, when the sequal will be a x-box exclusive. An I have no intention of buying a xbox with its crappy controller.

What? Aren't we a bit overdramatic? :D

I don't know if you are aware of it, but Microsoft's goal for next couple of years is to have ONE joined market in Windows and on XBox.

I like playing those games on the PS4, in my living, so one joint market doesn't solve that for me.
