Game Discussions Well.. looking at Steam charts..

No one asked my opinion so here it is:

White Knight:
A White Knight is a person that jumps into a forum discussion to defend the game and counter attack on the person who put a critic, often accusing the person of ignorance, incompetence and trolling.
For a White Knight the game is perfect as it is and it needs no fix nor improvement. Any additional content (even if delayed, incomplete or bugged) is a generous extra that deserves admiration.

Yes I remember some people acting so here, but I'm too bad at remembering names so actually I can't point my finger towards no one in particular 🤷‍♂️
The problem with this is that criticism is very subjective. What you don't like might be my favourite feature and vice versa. Just take a look at Open Only vs Open PvE debates or FSS vs ADS. Also, the criticism itself often is worded pretty badly: "Frontier fix your completely broken and unplayable game, you are the most incompetent developer in the world and Elite is just bad." It's pretty easy to disagree with almost every part of that sentence without being a white knight.

Can you link some posts where some poor misguided fool is constantly saying the game is perfect and never criticising it?

Lol love it... If there's even the smallest fragment of some sort of hope that Elite is 'better' than, well, anything else, does the Steam Chart data seem to have some value. Otherwise the faithful grab their pitchfork's to Lynch such heretic thoughts.

Personally I don't really care for NMS or how it performs compared to Elite (I do wish them all the best though!). The only reason it's fun is because some people always told me that NMS is objectively the better game and that it will be the death of Elite. These claims never stopped and recurred every time there was a major update for it, they quickly go away during low player numbers though. Steam charts data is mostly pointless but if someone uses a player peak that results from an update to claim that another game does everything wrong and will soon be dead, I'll point out that the data doesn't show that at all. If your interpretation is that people are claiming that Steamcharts data doesn't have any value at all you just don't understand the argument. People also very often mistake average concurrent players for the complete player base. And they don't realise that the graph shown on steamcharts is flattened in favour of peak numbers which results in a wrong representation of reality.

But, alas, as in previous attempts of improving one's self confidence, this one also fails to state that NMS is primarily a single player offline game, and Elite is errr not an offline game but wanted to be.
There is not much point in arguing about something that is completely made up.

And also NMS outsold Elite by, what, 10x or greater in it's first week of sales alone. But hey, don't let reality spoil ones imagination! Rejoice all ye Elite faithful, rejoice! For what I don't know...
In that case concurrent player numbers for NMS surely must be 10x or greater as well? Unless people were wrong when they claimed that NMS will be the death of Elite... This just shows that Elite can't be as bad as you want it to be.

And then there is Space Engineers. An indie game with two thirds more average players than ED.
I still consider ED to have failed the september update and I can't even play without restarting the game every hour or so due to connection errors.

If you stop imagining white knights they will go away (doesn't work against Stigbob).

What about ? hes still here.

Yeah well if (and only if) you call me on it for everyone else, ill have to concede to being wrong sure.

Naah that's not true, stuart gt is a white knight.

I think to me what pushes people over the line from well meaning into a white knight must be if they are also rude to people. Over the base of apologetic standpoint and pushing that non objective / niche stance onto others.

I'm not in front of a jury so yes I can.
For the same reason you're free to disagree with me.

The trick in this situation though is the probably applying the same trick i do to you guys.. basically seeing a particular statement as beyond rational and choosing to leave it aside. Pick your battles.

That could be where we differ.

Stuart GT was one of the initiators of the Open Letter / Petition. Calling people white knights is rude to begin with by the way.
