ANNOUNCEMENT January Update - Beta Announcement

I appreciate the focus on fixing key bugs, but VR is a real strength of the game and especially as we don't seem to be getting any new content, let alone gameplay, until mid-2020 at the earliest. I hope ED will keep up with the times, realise how many people enjoy the game for its VR capability and support the latest tech.
Definitely this.

Already explorers are posting along the lines of "if they do ill quit"
People doing this are the ones who love the FSS because it does everything for them. Of course I find it ironic when veteran players who got along just fine with the old ADS (which gave no details about planets) are now threatening to quit over this very tiny change (IMPROVEMENT) to the FSS. I'm pretty sure most of these "I'm going to quit!" people are just throwing a tantrum to try to blackmail Frontier into listening to them over everyone else. So I'll give you points for actually quitting when Frontier removed the ADS ;)

Im not sure i would agree with their motivation being blackmail. I think they are in exactly the same boat the ADS people were in and i also think that if i had accepted the FSS and was playng and these ideas came along i would be exactly the same. It looks designed to annoy people, but then again im the same person that thinks the FSS is designed to annoy people so make of that what you will. I know where they are coming from tho, just leave peoples toys alone. Is there nothing more important to fix/deliver?

That said when FD completely ignore everybody cause they cant see a problem ill try to drop by and comment :)

But so far no Open Letter "on behalf of the community" 🤷‍♂️

This is what they used to say about people who liked the ADS isnt it? I dont understand why there has to be an element of discomfort involved. So what if it does everything?

Its that same desire to inflict something on the player that they dont want to do. This is what makes them quit.

Has anything been done about the instancing issues, soft crashes, lag and disconnects in MultiCrew? Is it still not possible for MultiCrew members to see personal livery in the ships they visit?

I hope I am wrong but I suspect wings, multicrew and instancing issues etc are not just bugs but consequences and limitations of the chosen network architecture. As such they would probably require a fundamental change and specific rewrite of Elite’s net code, and not just a few bug fix updates.

I used to enjoy the ADS/FSS 'discussions' - even though you & I were on opposite sides of the fence - the current 'topics' are far less interesting :)

Buzzkill... Dangerous 2.0 it is then.

What you call discomfort, I call challenge. But if you want everything done for you, just go to EDSM - that's the easiest way to explore :p

I'm interested in knowing more about the status of this issue below, which was listed on the original post as one issue that will be further investigated:
I've hit HIP 36601 yesterday again, on the information that all the shards now give materials. While I found out that the problem was fixed for me (as about half of the shards didn't yield anything, and now they do - now I get pointy things besides getting the flying porcupines), I also found that the frame rate dropped considerably (to about 1 fps!?!) when I have a bunch of shards in front of my SRV. Drive was smooth there before (a few months ago), when half the shards yielded nothing to me. Does anyone know what's going on?

I noticed the same last weekend when visiting the Shard sites with my alt - every 'point' gave the material, but some 'pointy things' (usually black) were disgorged :)
Not able to verify the slow-down as I'm lazy and do one at a time... But agree that they all 'bear fruit' now - even if it is odd-shaped.

ETA: my main visited a couple of months ago and about 1/3 points didn't give the mat, just disappeared - so a noticable change.

Frankly Duck, your statement here is pure hogwash. Simply because someone has a negative opinion on FD's proposal for the FSS does not mean they are throwing a tantrum or threatening blackmail. Players are allowed to have opinions which differ from yours.

I like the current FSS but I feel it could use some improvement. Adding more random probability to the mechanic is NOT an improvement. The whole point of the FSS was to provide explorers with information to make decisions from while adding some gameplay to the process (more than simply pressing one button). The old ADS allowed faster decision making, but while the FSS takes more time to use it also provides explorers with more info to work from. FD's change would weaken the usefulness of the FSS greatly, adding more uncertainty to a long process for no gain at all, as we can currently tell if a planet has geo sites instantly because a long spinning wheel is the telltale with the current FSS.

I am not a fan of removing useful tools from the explorers toolbox. Using the FSS is already cumbersome enough, we don't need to add random dice rolls to it as well.

They are itching to make use of the random dice generator they had to strip out of engineers :D

I'm not an explorer so forgive this idea but:

why does FD not create a 'Goldilocks' zone for each lifeform you want to find? It could be a filter where you tick off what you want, and each lifeform gets an overlay in the map screen as to where its most likely to be found. Explorers can then know that any body in that defined area is a good candidate for finding life.

To get around the logical paradox of knowing where an unknown lifeform grows maybe the Goldilocks zone is only shown after that lifeform is confirmed in the codex?

We also wanted to give you an update on the following issue: VR: Double Vision and Incorrect Rendering on HMDs with Non-Parallel Displays (ex. Pimax). At the current time, there are no plans to provide support for new HMDs outside the officially supported systems and platforms. The officially supported platforms are Valve Index, HTC Vive and Oculus.
The kind of sad negative trend for VR continuous. The decision to ignore the voting an bring up lame excuses does show how badly you value some of your most die hard fans and supporters.
Me for my case have stopped talking about ED anywhere else outside of ED forums. You lost me as an influencer and marketing imp when it became evident there is no further progress in VR. I simply can't tell ppl how great the game is anymore while You keep on disappointing the VR community.

Still hope You guys wake up some day...

For some reason I don't understand biological POIs are not a problem, they resolve immediately. There is no clear Goldilocks Zone for vulcanism afaik, although there might be general rules that could be applied (which would be effectively the same as the proposal in the OP).
