Newcomer / Intro What are you up to?

I've been out exploring a bit, headed out to get the 5k LY for Palin. On my way I encountered many neutron stars, and did plenty of jumps. However, last night I encountered what I can only describe as a very "angry" star. I thought it was a white dwarf: the cones were very wide and was aggressively spinning several tens of times a second. I managed to supercharge anyway, but got 4 times the jump range. I checked the system and it was indeed a neutron star. Anyone encountered something similar? Is this normal? All other neutron stars I've found are nice and calm with narrow jets.

Decided it was high time for Guardians. FSD please. So, I made my way to a system that allegedly has a ruin - Synuefe NL-N C23-4 , planet B3 - but had to log off. I then read further and discover I should have fixed some point defence to my ship. Gnnnyarrr.

Don't make the mistake I made and go there in a Cobra taxi that has the utility mounts on the lower hull. You need them in the upper mounts, or they won't track the missiles.
It's also do-able without point defence. Just synthesize premium ammo to take the sentinels down quicker, and zip back and fore to the ship for repairs when needed, and don't hang about once the dispenser goes active and you have to deal with mummy sentinel, daddy sentinel, and their two angry offspring at the same time.

So I refitted my Corvette. I swapped out the fixed beam huge lasers with gimbal beam lasers. I also replaced the two medium rail guns with gimbal multi-cannons. Then I went to Blaster and engineered the MCs as high as the materials I had on hand would allow. Mostly G4 and G5 now. Next step is to head to a High Res site to test this new load out. If what everyone says is true about engineering, then my foes will quickly be reduced to space debris while I laugh maniacally

Wended my way down to a Guardian site. Not really after anything, just wanted to see what they looked like.

Attacked. Blew it up. Got my first few Guardian mats. Yay. Repeated a minute or so later. Also picked up a couple of relics. Then, I inadvertently started some timer thing going. And some more sentinels popped up. Not really knowing what I was doing, I just ran for it. For a good five minutes, I was evading missiles. They don't give up, do they?

Anyway, I recalled the ship which touched down OK, then I boarded, forgot to tranfer my relics in my haste and took off. Jumped to another system and went to the galmap to plot my way home.

"Warning! Taking heat damage!"

Wha... jump back to see what was happening only to see that, for some reason, my SCA had failed and the star was boiling me up. Escaped the searing heat and lost some ship integrity in the process. Looking at my modules, it seemed the SCA was down to 60%. No idea why. Repaired it. Jumped again.

Er... SCA still failing to auto-slow.

In the spirit of immersion, I logged out. When I logged back in, the SCA was working again.

Ah well.

Next time 'round, I'll look up what it is I should be doing. I know there's something like four obelisks you have to trigger and grab some "thing" you jettison over a hole or something. Can you tell I'm a little vague on the whole thing?

Still, it was a fun little sojourn.

You will probably enjoy the Guardian Beacon sites as well, IIRC there is one not far from the ferry from the bubble that runs each Thursday in the morning game time.

Beta is up, but I can't play this week because holiday family stuffs. Why'd they do this over Thanksgiving, anyway? I can't be the only one, lol.

Not that much in there matters to me. The stuff I'd like to see fixed isn't even on the radar, and most of what is being fixed has never affected me.

Ah well, perhaps it's for the best then! :)

Hope you all are having a great week!

Just pootling about around the California Nebula, re-learning how to fly a ship, and catching up on all the new Exploration Tech (just in time for it all to change again, by the sounds of it!), mapped my first few planets, haven't tried the new scanner widgets properly though.

Gotta go away for a couple of days, oh, right now, but should be able to get another session in oin Sunday Evening, whence I return.

I went to a high res site with my Corvette and it performed very well. I quickly dispatched a couple of Anacondas and an imperial cutter. Unfortunately I inadvertently picked up some illegal cargo while scooping up materials. I then picked up a small fine when the System Authority ships scanned me, so it was off to interstellar factors to pay the fine.

Overall I'm pleased with the ship's combat performance. Now I need to work on engineering the shield, armor, and lasers. After that I need to finish engineering the MCs.

Made it safely to Merope, and got a few scout kills. They are decent target practice and I am getting a good feel for the ship in battle load out. Very satisfying when they pop haha.

Gonna park up at Alcazar’s Hope for the evening and maybe try my luck with a mama tomorrow.

I seek some advice from the thread collective wisdom :)

I am over-hauling Hecla my Asp Explorer. She has already served me well on a prior 12 month journey into the black, but now I'm pondering a couple of upgrades before taking her out again.

I have the ability to buy a Guardian FSD booster after some tedious mucking about grave-robbing a while ago. So my initial thoughts were to fit a 5H FSD booster into the 5 slot. However, that is currently occupied by my 5C Bi-Weave shield generator, which has an optimal hull-mass rating of 389T against Hecla's actual hull mass of 280T (and unladen mass of 358T).

If I make that replacement, then the next largest slot available is a size 3, which I could fit a 3C Bi-Weave into, but the 3C Bi-Weave's optimal hull mass is 158T. Engineering in any form seems to actually decrease the optimal mass covered, so I'm not sure that is a solution... Fitting shield boosters might bring up the optimal, but then the mass of the shield boosters starts to eat into the benefit gained by have the 5H FSD booster.

So, my questions are:

1: Does that drop in optimal mass covered from the 5C to the 3C shield mean a too risky build? Bearing in mind that I once survived a plummet on a 2G world thanks to shielding (it was my fault, I shouldn't have used the thrusters in the way that I was)

2: Would adding shield boosters make much of a difference?

3: Am I missing something?? :)
