We Need to be Better as a Community

If you were watching in b&w Ted Lowe used to be able to help you with pink vs green, but sadly he has died.

RIP Whispering Ted

Sorry, bit OT there, i shall now be quiet.

In early B/W Cinematography, 'White' clothes were actually yellow (something to do with early halides) although I'm not sure just how yellow that was - apparently it appeared as bright white...

In artificial light - I assume by hailed you mean fluorescent lights - things get ugly quite fast. If the early fluorescent lights had a strong blue part in the light (cold color temperature) then it would have been better to adjust the objects in the scene by adding more yellow then adding the right filter to the lens as this would have reduced the amount of light available for the film and old film needed a lot of light.

I remember a time when Toxic was something palpable that could actually kill you in enough quantity, not just some words on the internet.
Odd that, Cancer can (and does) kill, yet is also used as a comparator often in this very forum, usually to describe a feature the poster disagrees with.

Aren't we all glad that words on the internet cannot contain their alleged 'content'?

But then, IRL gay used to mean happy when I was young... Words adapt in useage...

I agree with your sentiment though :)

I agree with you on this, but good luck...

I think this community has shifted to a few elites who must spend nearly all of their time on these forums. Whenever there is an opinion that doesn't align with the ones who, for some reason, believe this is their game, they attempt to drive the originator of the opinion away.

I think most of them are ones who have been here since alpha/beta/gamma and for some reason believe their opinion is more important/valid/correct than anyone else's.

They definitely have the most will to have stuck with, and even praised, the abuse of this developer for so long.

Don't forget to stock up on Braben Bucks everyone! Black Friday is just around the corner! I hear there are good deals if you'll do the math to figure it out!

My favorite are the OPs who are sphincters from the get go. They whine, then respond with stuff like:

“wow thank for dum advice idiet this community suk”

Or assault my eyes with a punctuation-free wall ‘o text that makes absolutely zero sense, even if you attempt to add a few dots here and there.

I’m fine if those people bail on the community, honestly. They probably weren’t gonna stick around long anyway lol.

"Three more principles call on individuals to create rich and relevant content to make the web a valuable place, build strong online communities where everyone feels safe and welcome, and finally, to fight for the web, so it remains open to everyone, everywhere."

;)

I think TBL is in denial about the fact that he unleashed Pandora's box on the world.

Most beginner questions could be answered with a Q&A forum, basically its the same post over and over again which annoys most and those not using search.

Attacking personalities by saying the other people attack personalities, hypocritical.

More of the same.

Dev bashing. Assumption everyone should regard the people who made the video game as being abusive somehow. With no detail whatsoever obviously.

Don't forget to stock up on Braben Bucks everyone! Black Friday is just around the corner! I hear there are good deals if you'll do the math to figure it out!

Dev bashing. Complaining about the sale of cosmetics, which were always the plan rather than a sub demonstrating inadequate pre-purchase research.

At the start of your post when you said this :

I agree with you on this, but good luck...

I didn't realize you intended to immediately offer yourself up as proof of toxicity.

The fine art of communication. In the olden days it was the most dangerous situation of all. Trumping both climate and the gods.
Ponder living in a house in a forest with no nations and roaming bands of nomads everywhere. Different languages and cultures that are all unknown to you.

Occasionally some tribe of nomads came your way. You had no idea of their intent, and could either flee your home or stay and try talk to them.

That is why British people are overly polite sometimes.

They learned that from building an Empire.

If you are polite you get somewhere. If you are impolite you risk civil disobedience.
If you talk to the wrong people you will suffer the consequences immediately. If you stay away, you might survive. (neanderthals, denisovans, homo erectus all tried this)

With the internet, everyone are just their own spirit floating around unable to physically interact. This causes them to return to their spirit self. What you were before you were born. Your essence.

Please meditate over this and realize that what you are, is not your body, but it affect everyone. Be polite and your soul will be good.

I posted this in response to another thread, but I think the message is important so I am making it a main thread also, was written in response to a new player who made a bit of a mistake about what he was saying then got a lot of negativity about it :

Having read a lot now of what has been posted in reply to your post, I have the following comments.

It is really not right all the toxicity you have had to endure, and I totally do not accept it. You made a mistake by thinking <whatever not really important>. You said on your post that you were just a casual player. All of the <> you are getting is not right. Just another example of toxicity on this forum. You made a mistake, so what? No excuse for nastiness from those who know better. And we have all been beginners/casual level at one point.

Cant we be better than this, as a community ?

How do you think the OP is going to feel, next time he wants to post something?

Maybe he is going to think twice about it now. Is that REALLY what we want? For voices to be silenced because of all the toxicity that gets thrown around? Because that is for sure what is happening. People need a VERY thick skin to stick around this forum. I know many CMDRs who just wont post here for that very reason, they are fed up with <> that gets thrown their way just for voicing opinion.

Now I am not going to call anyone out, I dont want to embarrass or provoke anyone, and I dont want to get yet another warning for "flaming" aka defending myself when toxicity gets thrown my way.

OP has been put into the "Victim's Dilemma", yet again. Harsh responses elicit both you and toxic poster get a warning and banned from posting to the thread for 3 days + posts removed. Do nothing and mods will just ignore those toxic comments. Happens a lot in life and I call it the "Victim's Dilemma". Someone does something to you and its not serious enough for authority to care but you do something back then you become the criminal and suddenly whole thing is taken seriously. It is a lose-lose scenario.

So what is the solution to all of this, in the context of the Elite: Dangerous official forum ?

The mods have no will to solve it. One can see on the very first page of this thread comments that are clearly disparaging to the OP and his post, and the next a post in response to this thread by a Mod. The moderation team read this comment yet chose to do nothing. Frontier knows these forums have a bad reputation for toxicity yet choose to do nothing.

It is up to us, THE COMMUNITY, to do what we can to solve this problem of chronic toxicity, and what I propose is this :

1. SPEAK UP. If you see someone being denigrated, tone policed, baited, insulted or any of the other words that just mean using words to hurt another person then : SAY SOMETHING. Say it is not right and that you do not agree with it. There is a massive difference between disagreeing with someone thence attacking the premise or logic of their arguments and attacking THAT PERSON as a person. They are alike, yet not alike. Confuse them not.

2. NO NAMING AND SHAMING. This does absolutely no good and just causes fights/flame wars. Dont do it. People might also have a good motive and just made a mistake in their wording, you dont know. Dont call people out, it is just repeating the whole cycle we are trying to break.

3. GIVE THE REASONS WHY TOXICITY ON THESE FORUMS IS A BAD THING
3.1 It is discouraging people from having a voice. Many people are thin skinned and end up banned or just leave these forums because of this. Every voice adds value.
3.2 It is giving these forums a bad reputation. People prefer to post on reddit or face book rather than here and who can blame them? We should be an example to other communities. Compare and contrast to Kerbal Space Program official forums.
3.3 It is causing a lot of anger and bad feeling. Many people who aught be fast friends because of strong shared interest and passion are falling out or getting enmity.
3.4 It makes the forums a generally nasty place, one must always wonder when posting how someone is going to attack, knowing any defence of oneself is likely to elicit a warning
3.5 I know most people dont give a dam about anyone but themselves. But for the odd few who are the exception, knowing the toxicity is upsetting people and making others unhappy aught be reason enough to want to clean these forums up.
3.6 And probably many, many other reasons, I leave it to the ingenium of the individual to work out, state of affairs is good for no-one.

And I know many people will say it cant be done, the will is not there, we wont get everyone on board, etc, etc. It only takes a few respected CMDRs to consistently lend voice when they notice toxicity for things to change for the better. As it was rightly said "One carat of diamond is worth several tons of sand; we dont need the majority". We should be an example in space sim community, not a toxic cess pit.

Like I replied to you in the previous thread, I do not think you message in that thread did ANY good whatsoever, if anything you simply poured more gasoline on the flames...
You picked a very bad thread as example, where you turned out to actually defended what you wanted to combat. I see that you actually bothered to reply in this thread about that you now understand that you made a bad choice of threads to make your stance in, but it does not make it any better, as you did obviously not do your own research before posting in that thread.... as anybody that will spend a minimum effort, can find the thread in question and read it and form their own opinions, and that will for obvious reasons put a huge spanner in your arguments, as it was a terrible example to defend the original poster....

The Moderators for most part, just like in most other forums, do a good job according to their guidelines in keeping the forums in an acceptable state... Now once again, you, me and just about anybody else have our own opinions on where the line of what is acceptible is, it is for most part not up to me or you to decide where that line is. In this case, this is FDev's forum, and it is their rules and guidelines that governs that. As long as the moderators follows these rules and guidelines, they are doing their job good. If Moderators starts to take their own initiative to moderate because of their own believes etc, then they are BAD.

I do understand that you in the other thread did not really care about the "issue" the OP had, but rather about the level of how the discussion was had, but that is once again, just you pouring gasoline on a fire... as you were now engaging in exactly what you where trying to rally against, you alienated people of that thread with your own post, in essence, creating more toxicity...

Its the reason I rarely read the forums anymore. So much negativity, "git gud" posts and general nastiness. The forum is not a reflection of the ED community, you only have to go to Lave con and other meet ups to realise that.

07 to all the decent cmdrs :)

Hey friendly reminder, this is Mr. We Need To Do Better:

Really just a case of a "certain part of the community" wanting revenge through the forums for what they cannot perform in the game. Deliberate throw some salt into PvP/open players game/experience yet again for no good reason by encouraging Devs to ignore features we need.

And, again, this thread was started because of this thread. Read the thread and drink in the context, and then check out the banger of a response which is really much funnier if you've read at least the first page or two.

This is not about "be nice on the forums", this thread is about "don't disagree with me it's toxic."

Dang dis is just the moan zone, comedy bickering is what its for.

For actual ED discussion you have discord and Inara.

Blasphemy, I use Teamspeak, and no written words... and to make sure we have a friendly attitude, we only discuss things we agree on... well they try to agree and I speak my mind or was it the other way around... I know I have a note about it somewhere... it probably was on my whiteboard... some 30+ wipes ago...everybody should have a big whiteboard!
