Star Citizen Discussion Thread v11

Don't get me wrong...I wasn't being politically correct or sensitive there. The very notion that some strange Flat earther launched himself from a ski ramp bolted onto the back of a pickup truck whilst sitting inside what was little more than an explosive bathtub to help prove a ridiculous theory that contradicts every scientific notion for the last 600 years is just a bit comical...besides losing his life attempting to reinforce the silliness of course.

More than 2,000 years, actually. Greek philosophers had already proven that Earth is not flat . . . ;)

You guys are funny. SC will run out of money this year like they ran out of money in 2018, except there will be no sucker investor to supply 46M this time. ;)

Didn't they report a record crowd funding year?

It's difficult to imagine any crowdfunding project pulling in more money than ever, 8 years after the Kickstarter campaign without having delivered the product.

"Hey are you guys ever going to send me my PEBBLE watch? Oh you need more time to 'get it right', oh fine, I guess I'll stuff some more money down your pants then"

Both (assuming comptent devs) have the scope to become great games.

In your case, with your love of PvP, i agree, i don't think ED will ever be the game you want. The smaller scale of SC and lack of modes means its much more PvP "friendly". However, there are those in the SC community who really don't like the idea of getting pad rammed or being blown up as they exit the safety zone around stations, and will not appreciate being told to git gud or fly a something better (when perhaps they can't afford anything better), and some who just want to chill. They backed SC based on the dreams CIG sold them (PvP sider, NPC to Player ration 90 to 10, with NPCs being indistinguisable from players (LOL!)).

For the moment, they can still dream. Limited players on a server, the PvP guilds/clans/whatever not really in full swing perhaps, no real loss, so griefers perhaps not so interested yet, and they can always fall back on "its early days, its alpha" to assuage their concerns about how the final game might be, and it allows them to continue dreaming.

As things get closer to release, or upon release, they might find that the game isn't what they expected, and the forum wars will truly start, akin to what we have here. And CIG might listen to those people, and make changes which make the game less PvP friendly, and that will then upset the PvPers.

Dreams are easy. Reality sucks.
It's just like with ED - probably even worse: They don't have any idea how to integrate the different playstyles into one game world.

Yeah, if we go by that logic Star Citizen development would have started in the year 2000, when Chris Roberts is already on record about his intentions for a sequel to Freelancer. And breaking that Guinness record.
Nah. Going by SC logic, it'll have to be 1990.

That's when ideas about WC: Privateer came about, and Freelancer was stated by Chris to be his attempt at making WCP "right", and finally, of course, SC had been described as his finally being able to do what he wasn't allowed to do with Freelancer.

Thus, SC = Fl = WCP, and development started right after Wing Commander came out.

Actually we need to go further back. CR said he was inspired when he first saw Star Wars as a child, hence Star Ctiizen was born from Star Wars, therefore all SC IP belongs to George Lucas!

I can already see all the SC faithfuls saying that "SC failed only because it was too big and ambitious for its time. The technology was to primitive to make it work, oh and that haters constant hate campaign did its part as well. But overall its a great success and the money is well spent!

I doubt that will happen to be honest. Unless the funds have been incredibly mismanaged I think there's 2-3 years worth of funds on hand, assuming backer pledges stay constant (which they have so far).

And assuming CI doesn't do some shady stuff with the pledged data. Like using Calders money to buy ships from themselves (or heck even outright faking the data) to make it seem like they are healthier than they in fact are.

Err... That's not what their financials showed.

Actually they do. Lots of caveats there though:
  • You need to trust an incomplete, non standard format, financial document that does not seem to have been audited by an independent third party like publicly traded companies do
  • You need to trust that CIG´s funding tracker is a fair reflection of their income
  • You need to trust there is no preferred equity obligations or similar towards the Calders.
Trusting all of the above, among other things, and asuming backer funding continues at similar pace, then Stuart is probably correct.

Dreams are very enticing & alluring, but them becoming reality often leads to disappointment.

Enjoy the now :)

Speaking of, now that Dreams has launched, someone should make Star Citizen, in Dreams, on console.

Also..

They are getting there, it’s gently caressing complicated what they are trying to achieve.

I hate seeing this. Complicated? Sure. But also done before many many times in many engines by many companies some of which built the engines themselves.

Hehe, agree things can get very silly very fast. But Privateer and Freelancer were actually released, so in terms of "selling" your case to the Guiness thingy (if one wanted to update the record) you would probably need to start at the moment Chris Roberts first mentioned an intent to have a Freelancer sequel (similar to Braben Elite 4 intent statements) and then support it with all the multiple occasions where he has mentioned SC is the game he always wanted Privateer/Freelancer to be etc, or similar. There is also actually video proof that "Freelancer 2" had some work towards it but it never saw the light of day. This would put Star Citizen development time at 20 years and counting.

That's fair enough… although I'd counter that with how Privateer was an idea Chris had, but he didn't actually make it. Same with Freelancer: it was his idea, but he ultimately didn't make it. Thus SC, is Chris finally getting to do that idea he had in connection to Wing Commander being released. :p

The fact that both were released just show how people keep stealing his ideas and let's face it, the biggest Chris-idea-thief is Chris, seeing as how he made the same game four times over. So it all fits in the end. :D

I have not posted in a log time, I’ve been to busy playing SC. The PTU has been extremely stable for me and its been a blast.

I’m just posting here to say that CIG just released Elite Dangerous Anaconda! The Carrack is awesome, I’m so tempted to upgrade my 600i to it, its that good.

We are using it as a home away from home for the syndicate. It can easily hold two M50’s in the hangar, which are super fun to fight in, and to go low and fast.

Basically the M50 is the perfect SLF!

Hope all is well with everyone.

That’s weird, I heard it was an unstable, unfinished death trap...

Maybe the truth lies somewhere in between...

(Although in fairness, no Anaconda has ever done that before ;))
