He also noted that since SC has got all this massive funding that its not good enough for SC to have such basic gameplay and that it has to be the BDSSE. Anything less is unacepptable.
Isnt that the main crux in this trench war? People who dont say "this is
bad" but "this is not
enough"? And this "entitlement" if you want to call it that comes from CIGs own promises, statements and most of all the pricetags they put on items. I think you can expect a little more from a 600 dollar ship then just being
nice. So most of this "hating" on Star Citizen isnt hate at all. Its rather the gap between actual and expected value. I can understand people having fun with this alpha, barebones and lacking as it is. As some stated, if you cant change it and have no impact the least you can do is have some fun.
And looking past all those insufficiencies, the bugs, the deceptions, broken promises, delays and disappointments in order to
have fun is no small feat. I am unable to see anything grand about SC or the potential anymore explicitly for that reason. And all the basic examples some people shove into my face showing short clips of people having fun pretending or funny memes or nice vistas dont help to look past all those issues. They are dominating. Not only because of their severity when it comes to game development but by their sheer number. The backlog of critical issues to be resolved for SC to become a reality is already crushing. And despite the fact that CIG seems to be unable to attack and disolve most of them they even make it
worse by constantly adding more to the pile.
Some people report being
content in just spending their evening in front of a a loading screen, laughing about crashes and bugs because they have company and being
thrilled at things that wouldnt even rise to awareness in other games. I understand the internal monologue and conclusion that allows these people to have that view but I constantly have the nagging knowledge at the back of my head that this time-spending already costs as much as a fully blown AAA game and in most cases has been aquired by spending insane amounts of money (going by the store prices) on something thats given for free in most other games.
I dont make demands to CIG simply because I dont have the right to do so. I am not a backer, I am not invested. I m merely an observer. I most certainly am able to form an opinion and consider facts provided to judge Star Citizen even when some people try to push that "you have to be a backer in order to be able to criticize it" card on me. Experience shows that even monetary investment doesnt grant you the "right" to be critical of SC. And in case you bring personal field experience to the board, know what you are talking about....again.....no criticism allowed.
I am simply not impressed by the visual fluff because it does nothing to enrich my gaming experience. And I realize that most of my problem comes from my overblown expectations. But when I tone down my expectations based on hype in other games, rebuke myself for allowing myself to get carried away in the first place I fail to do the same for Star Citizen because it charges you as if all those hype promises were a reality and them some. And if you dare to point to these irregularities or express disappointment, all the while staying perfectly polite and civil....you all know whats going to happen.
I understand that you oftentimes cannot say what you really think without becoming personal toward some people. So we all pretend to stay polite and civil and avoid heavy jabs in order to continue this discussion but I cant help but wonder what there is to talk about anymore. After we established boundaries and learned to respect peoples opinion different to our own the project itself isnt providing anything that would justify spending time discussing. How long is it now that we switched from observing the project to observing people in order to laugh, understand, stay interested?
I will never be able to truly "understand" the pro-SC people. Intellectually I do, sure but thats not the same as experiencing it myself. So I read those reports and listen to people who have a different view on SC then I do in order to gauge the narrator because THAT is interesting....not the boring pile of debris masquerading as a game. I followed FTR in his development from fanboy to whatever he is now. Some people in this very thread have a mixed history with Star Citizen and I cant help but notice that even the pro-SC participents seem to be very.....guarded in order to avoid others pointing at them and stating "HAH, you ve become a hater too". Not admitting to the doubts and worries and not acknowledging the glaring problems SC has isnt helping the project (because the project doesnt care....) but more troublesome is the fact of self-delusion playing a role in all this.
"Hanging by a thread" and "keep going despite all the obvious signs"... all forms of denial of different severity. I dont believe that the end result will change regardless how you adapt or change. That is....Star Citizen will not become any better the more time or money it gets. What it
can become....what it already
has become is pretty clear from the outside and I think most people realize that to varying degrees. Depending on how deeply invested they are. So some people perform damage control, others give up, again others
adapt and then some stay in full denial.
The game is pretty much dead and will be dead on arrival. The only thing that manages to create small ripples anymore are overblown reports of quasi-truths, exaggerations and community-driven propaganda. Whatever SC accomplishes at the moment is already accomplished by other games. Better and bigger too. Its true that the scope in SC still is bigger then most games but the glaring fact/problem is that even SC cannot provide and achieve that scope and that has been clear for quite some time now. Some people sit back and let this thing "play out" dreading but accepting possebilities like failure but a whole lot of folks refuse to accept those possebilities. Revel in dreams and visions, make up fake realities and distort facts to stay in the comfort zone. To keep dreaming. It hurts them like drug abuse hurts the addict but they dont care. And if you try to help them without being asked for help you will carry the brunt of retaliation and anger.
The thing is. We are not talking about the affected individuals anymore. I couldnt care less about the hyped up fanboys. Let them do whatever they want. I usually dont spend a second thought on all the druggies dying every day on the streets of the world too. Because regardless how much I refuse to accept Star Citizen as a "glorious example for game development done right" I have to grudgingly accept the
fact that SC is a financial success......for CIG. Even tho we cannot be sure that the funding tracker is real and the numbers shown reflect reality development time isnt cheap so there HAS TO BE enough money to carry this overblown monstrosity of corporate entity through the years. We can make estimates and we often have glimpes from the past (filed financial reports) helping in finetuning our guesses and the turn-over rate is millions and I have no problem believing that we are talking triple-digit sums.
The "
threat" I see in Star Citizens continued existence for myself is that its serving as a prime example for deceptive manipulation to other companies that are probably having a close look at how much pressure a community can endure before it reaches breaking point. It doesnt matter that the white knights and defenders of SC are equal to drug addicts, abused and without choice. Matured companies in the business certainly allow for those factors and the rest of the landscape shows that equally pertinent attempts at money-grabbing are not accepted or welcome but CIG continues to serve as a shining example that it can be done (reducing the customer to sheep in case that wasnt clear) and no doubt, others are trying to crack the formula to copy this. This happens anyway. I m not going to blame CIG alone for the deterioration of the gaming industry. Bad evil publishers have spearheaded this movement quite some time ago (whole different topic) but CIG has picked up on this and evolved it to a whole new level. Without remorse, without regret, without shame and without limit. CIG is not out to protect you from yourself. It will take whatever you can give and then some, leaving you sucked dry. Some companies keep up the pretense that they want to build "the best game possible" and oftentimes we believe it until we realize the charade. I respect barkeepers who refuse to serve you when you had enough if not for caring about you personally then at least because they try to avoid injuries and damages. CIG is the barkeeper who doesnt give a crap, it ll serve you your last drink knowing full well you ll go into cardial arrest and it doesnt care because it can give up and move on without fearing the consequences (TOS mostly). CIG basically is the drug dealer of the gaming industry and I give the same same respect I give those guys.
So I see a random poster in a comment section going full-delusional rampage trying to convince others to spend money on this scam and I feel the obligation to correct them. To
push back, resist. Because standing by idly is the same as allowing it to happen. No matter my efforts, no matter all the drama....Star Citizen will continue on until it ends. What that will be (partial success, roaring triumph, creeping death, collapse) is something that we can talk about but we wont know it until it happens. All the cheap shots that are fired back and forth (hey, SC raised another 20 millions, hooray) wont change the fact that Star Citizen is what it is. Personally I think the quicker this blows over the better for everybody. Because the longer this goes on the more the community is tearing itself apart. Annoyance and irritation turning to fiery hate. People
learning to be cruel and manipulative. Discussion techniques are nothing new to the world. Its just sad to see so many of the more elaborate techniques being used and abused in an environment where even kids and teenagers participate and oftentimes are affected.
Wishful thinking on my part I know. Its equal to the SC-fan wishing for SC to become a roaring success. The world is ugly and reality can be cruel. I can take a little comfort from the realization that in case SC turns out to be a scam (as I suspect) and people were abused for years...I havent been an accomplice in its doing. I didnt help keeping this up and hurting others. Financially and emotionally. Star Citizens level of deception is only surpassed by its communities ingenuity and willingness to fall back on cruelty and manipulation to push a narrative....not figure out the truth. And sure, in case Star Citizen does become a roaring success....I havent done anything to help it become it. But then....I never was needed in the first place. Whereas the other side of the mirror is different. While you certainly can ignore 90% of the people in order to achieve a success it takes a majority of people to look the other way to allow abuse to continue. Crimes are usually revealed and discovered by people who continue to look when most others look away or chose to turn a blind eye.
