Your last enjoyable Elite activity?

The last time i had a truly enjoyable elite experience was a few weeks after powerplay was first introduced. We were still stupid and thought that fdev would actually finish it and there were tons of people who were really into their powers and actively playing it as best as players can given that fdev doesn't give us a good way to communicate in the game and the vast majority occurs on the forum or other external channels. There was subterfuge, role playing, strategic cooperative planning and events. People spending dozens of hours each week participating.

Yea, pretty sure that was the last enjoyable time. These days ...I have more fun printing elite stuff than logging in and playing.

"given that fdev doesn't give us a good way to communicate in the game "

Text chat and voice coms not enough for you ?

Hull Seal Rescue

After an unfortunate encounter between my Viper, a pub-fresh Cmdr and some planetary terrain, I ended up with 1% hull about 5000ly SW of Colonia. I put out a mayday with the Hull Seals, who sprung to immediate action. A "hero with no cape" jumped an extraordinary distance to save my wayward ship, my bacon and 250m credits of exploration data. Seals be Champions!

For me it's just flying.

In the given case, about two hours in a RES. The whole "goal" was to rack up some bounty vouchers. Not that i need the money, not that it'd be optimal income per hour or anything like that. Not doing anything PP related (doesn't interest me at all), not doing anything Engineer related (is no fun), but merely enjoying piloting a spaceship. It's the best part of the whole game and what i really like. And combat might not be "realistic", but it's a really good way to really use the agility of your ship and enjoy flying it. :)

Decided to put on my tourist hat and bounce out to Sag A* yesterday. Got there this morning.

Last time I was there was in 2017. Lots changed. In game I was still with Newton's Fusiliers, the Coma War was just starting to heat up, and I just met my soon to be real life best friend. I couldn't even imagine Loren's Reapers and the Nameless yet.

Out of game... well, I wasn't sick yet. Next month will be a year since my diagnosis with Type 1 Diabetes. It still sucks, but I'm managing. I'm living.

In another thread someone made a joke about trying to gank Sag A*. I said best to flip it the bird and go for the ram. In the face of inevitability my best answer is still defiance. Shouldn't surprise me, I suppose.

Thanks for putting up with my crap all these years, everyone. Hell of a game we got here.

Hehe. It's rare that i do agree with what you write. We're quite on the opposite scale of the spectrum of the community here. But you deserve more than just the like i gave you for that posting. I also wish you to get well and carry on.
( The game needs all kinds of people be fun and successful, after all. :) )

This is very kind of you to say. Thanks. :)

Fair enough, let's put some "facts" on the table shall well? :)

Let's take one item from your list shall we? Let's take a big one... the only chance CMDRs had to experience the first time an alien invasion took place in Elite Dangerous. "Thargoids!"

FD had years to prepare for the Thargoid Invasion. They knew it was coming, so had plenty of time to invest new mechanics and gameplay into ED, ready to then make the most of the invasion? Can you name a single mechanic they put into place in the preceeding years, ready to then leverage when the Thargoid invasion happened to make the most out of it? More involved combat scenarios? NPC Wingmen? Fighter based combat scenarions/missions attacking/defending locations? Stuff to actually leverage and utilise as part of Thargoid related gameplay? Because I can't...

Instead year after year was "wisely" spent on the likes of Multicrew and game unbalancing Engineering, so when the Thargoid Invasion finally came, the kind of gaming experience FD could offer us leveraging the mechanics they'd wisely investing in, was:-
1) Interdictions, where you could do nothing but watch.
2) Stations being attacked by invisible fleets when the game was offline.

Why aren't we swapping into a Powerplay type view to see the Thargoid position across the bubble? Why are we seeing tasks in areas to affect that position? Why in 2020 are we not able to utilise gameplay mechanics we have back in games from the 1990s, such as being able to launch in a wing of fighters (other CMDRs or controlled NPCs) to attack/defend assets/locations to actually affect the Thargoid position?

For the past 4-5yrs the level of features added to ED (IMHO) have been all too often half baked and shallow. And the Thargoid invasion underlines this... A chance to add some more involved joined up gameplay, and instead years were spent on other shallow features, such that when the Thargoids arrived, the game literally had no mechanics to leverage to make much of it.

And let's take a more recent example from your list? Mining 2.0? Areas of it certainly are good, but again, others just show FDs inabilty to do well designed layered mechanics. We have a scanner (PWA) which is all but pointless, and whole areas of mechanics (eg: subsurface deposits) so poorly implemented, they are all but a waste of time. Again, it just seems to show a lack of joined up design ability.

So yes, lots of things have been added to ED over the past 4-5yrs, but too many of them have been shallow (point and click Generation Ships), dust collecting (Thargoid bases), basically misguided (Multicrew) or even needlessly upset the the balance of the game (eg: Engineering for PvP and PvE). And all this with supposedly 100+ people beavering away on the game year after year?

IMHO, FD just seem to struggle at design or management level with what they're doing with ED... Too much effort has been squandered over the past 4-5yrs, and there seems have been little desire or ability to create bar raising features. And the fact so many features are pulled and delayed literally months before release, just seems to underline this design/management issue.

/facts
OK. You seemed unaware that there had been any additions to the game apart from multicrew in the last five years. I guess that really you were just exaggerating the time interval for dramatic effect to show your dislike of that one feature?

I won't address all those things above; too long. (Except to note that the fact it's too long shows how much game development we've seen). I think you need to ease back on the personal opinion words like "shallow", "pointless", "poorly implemented", "dust collecting", "misguided" when you're trying to list facts though. Those all seem to be just euphemisms for "feature I don't choose to take part in". Just one example: when you describe Thargoid bases as "dust collecting", is that really because you think players don't go to them, activate them and enjoy the display? If so, all I can say is: you're utterly wrong.

So this thread is aimed at people who don't play anymore to see what they can still remember?

My last enjoyable activity was doing planetary scan mission earlier today. I had a lot of fun, because first of all I'm flying new ship - Federal Gunship, that I've outfitted in such way that it has 100m/s top speed and distributor is unable to boost. I always felt that great speeds distort the sense of scale in the game, so I'm enjoying slowly approaching targets now :)

This is DD, where old people reminisce about the good old days and complain about the present.

The culmination of months of work on a project I am involved in is about to happen, tonight a friend & I have a war to start. The actual activities we are doing is lots of easy, little things. Knowing what things to do is the tricky bit.

Huge fun ;)

War is now pending after a big final push last night, happy with the result :) I normally work alone, or rather normally I am the only one working any particular system, this one is being done with a few other players from other groups that share a common goal but have very different motivations for achieving that goal, and that dynamic is the enjoyable, challenging part for me.

But now I must effectively put trust in others to complete the job, to win the war. The control freak in me wants to take charge of this part too but I have to trust them to do their part, trust that they know what they are doing too. I have other projects that need my input, and I have no authority over them anyway :) They couldn't have done this without us, and we can't do it without them.

In theory it's easy, I did what I agreed I would do, I helped to start the war. But I still care about the outcome, 'we' must succeed.

Fun ;)

I have been mucking about in RES sites for a few months in my Mamba, gathering mats and combat rank. Once in a while I pop over to my Krait Mk II and hammer on its build for a bit, before swapping back and going on more legally justified murder sprees. Good fun, and I love the fact that I can treat ED as an arcade space combat game for extended periods of time, and then dive back into other aspects of the game that are just as deep and fleshed out.

It is almost cool enough here for VR again too. Might use the headset for the last few % of combat rank "grind".

:D S

I recently started having great fun trying to create "Gold Rushes".

A little over a week ago, managed to turn the Taimin System into a Gold mine with the highest LTD prices in the Galaxy.
As of today, HIP 60174 managed to snatch 3rd and 5th highest LTD prices in the Galaxy :)

Yep, playing the Faction State fiddle is surprisingly fun, seeing all the Traffic rushing in :D

But... but... i haven't been there since quite a while. And so i saw nobody there for quite a while. Definitely nobody goes there any more... :D ;)

Mine was a recently getting into a big fight. Between Federation and the Empire. I was looking for mats from ships I destroyed and jumped into a place that had a Federation Capital ship and a Empire Capital ship warp in. It was super fun to side with the Feds and attack the Empire. Just a plain good space battle.

Text chat and voice coms not enough for you ?

text and voice chat only worked if you were in the same instance or were friends or were in a wing.

There was no way to communicate with your entire power. There was no way to create "channels" that you could join/subscribe to to communicate in the game.

Instead we have to (and still have to) do all of our real socializing outside of the game for the game.

So no...text and voice comms are not enough for me because I have this silly idea that the game should be played in the game and not force you to go outside of it to do what the game makes necessary to play it (notably, strategizing with people you've never met before and likely do not share your instance or may not be playing during the same time as you).

I think this needs its own thread.
There's a lot about the game comms that at first look seems really frustrating and drives a lot of players to Discord in a rush.
However, I think it's meant to be that way. You're flying around in space and jumping many lightyears at a time and you expect communication to be seamless?
How easy should it be to organise CMDRs across different star systems?

So good to see that there’s still people with some common sense on this forum. Unfortunately, you will never change the minds of the Elite nerds. We’ll have to wait for the Messiah 2020 Update to see once and for all if Frontier is able to produce non-halfbaked gameplay or not. But I’ll sure think twice (or thrice) before spending money on it.

My last enjoyable activity? Manually navigating to a crashed Anaconda last night as I'd forgotten to pack a surface scanner.

Life is what you make it. If you're not enjoying something - don't keep on doing it unless you have to, or lamenting on times gone by when you did enjoy it but don't any more.
Look to the future, live in the present, as a cumulation of previous experiences!
