Star Citizen Discussion Thread v11

This thread had to be built from scratch, it's doing things other threads have never done before and now that the pipelines are in place progress will be amazing. The defense force gameplay is becoming a bit stale, though, so we'll need to refactor that and build ExcusesEngine 2.0 from the ground up, which will require refactoring of the back-end server so that we can accommodate hundreds of thousands of participants in a single instance.

Um has this thread gone back to about 2014?
Well of course! Development began 2 years ago.

Any opportunity to repeat: 😛

From the article:
At this point, Cloud Imperium needs to just stop looking for money and actually produce something tangible.

Then underneath lots of coments from slightly offended people saying "nah aaah, nah aaah - reasons"

Honestly when is "no they don't need to make anything tangible, they need to make more money" a valid argument for any games developer. Imagine people making those kinds of defensive arguments if it was someone like EA or Ubisoft.

Yep. Creationists have no way of demonstrating how the mechanisms that they claim to work, actually work. It comes down to magic, or maybe a "cargo cult" understanding of science (if you dress up as scientists you're doing science kinda cart-before-horse situation).

Which, tbh, is a lot like CIG's methods of cargo cult game development. Or maybe it's cargo cult gameplay. Hmmm.

FWIW it's a really interesting phenomenon.

This writer obviously does not know anything about game development, pretty sure CIG is onto something great after all this time. Why would otherwise the Calders give them another 17 million? Just reward for their awesome and spectacular progress.

I'm quite sure the investors were drawn in on the back of how much CIG make from upselling assets and not unit sales of a complete game like other companies.

I can imagine the sorts of convesations they had around the numbers, "people buy game assets at these kinds of prices". "Look at these kinds of returns we can have over these periods".

That's a horrific place to be, we are so far from the original Kickstarter's claim of this being a game for gamers and "no pay to win" etc. It's a game for the money men.

Got it in one...the Calders aren't interested whether Ci¬G actually produce a space game or not, but merely raking in cash for their investment through the current financial model.

Coincidentally (and just to repeat something that hasn't been said in a while), cargo cult programming is a classic anti-pattern. It rather looks like CI¬G used that page as a checklist for determining how to set up shop…

There's a handful they haven't been able to implement yet, but it's not many and I'm sure they're working hard to cover those as well. :p

As you may be aware, we’ve been testing the Idris battle with our Evocati test group. Through these tests, we’ve discovered that the mission didn’t feel as good as we wanted it to, therefore we’d like to take a bit more time to ensure battling an Idris for the first time feels great. For these reasons, we’ve moved this card to the 4.0 column.

Dammit, wasn’t sceptical enough...

Will it be:

A) Stationary
B) Stationary and a cause of terrible performance
C) Mobile
D) Mobile and a cause of terrible performance
E) Removed within 3 months so they can add potted plants to Microtech.
F) All of the above

I’m going F

F in the chat :/
