I almost feel bad for Frontier

I fell out with Elite a while ago because of lack of content. FC's I was looking forward to, thought it may bring me back to the game. I expected the price of about 5B for one, but not the maintenance costs. I think I'll stick with the "other unmentionable" space game, that seems to have way more content and isn't just a screenshot sim.

But this means you are in a "good place", seeing that you have what you want already. For those who could care less about fleet carriers, their success or failure should be of no bother. It's the people who looked forward to the fleet carrier and came to realize in the beta that these carriers don't live up to their expectations, these are the people who have been let down.
Not quite. I wouldnt be here if I hadnt any interest anymore. You could call me a "potential future" buyer. But more grind. No thanks.

I don't think the situation is hopeless. Negative feedback mostly revolves around a few topics which are easy to fix, or get more in line with players' expectations.

  • Upkeep costs can be decreased
  • Wind up / cooldown times can be decreased
  • Universal Cartographics can be added

If only these three things are "fixed", or aligned better with the feedback than the reception of Carriers will be much better. Frontier can gain much reputation with relatively few changes this time around. It's not like Power Play or Engineers which had so many issues in the past. I'm hopeful.
You can't improve a useless concept much by just teaking numbers. There need some gameplay changes. Like Cartographer, rethink commodity market, actual carrier capability. And the some stuff that makes players actzally want to utilise the cargo space for.

Is CQC that "who can memorize where the powerups are" type of minigame with unengineered small ships? Not interested.
Ye, pretty much. I hate such stuff. Doom2016 MP was the same - collect enough and spawn OP monster to crush the rest of the players. It's an arcade plague. It would have been better without yellow lemons and blueberries and crap to pick up.

In fact I never wanted Elite MP. I just wanted a new Elite game. I found out that to play online game, live sörvice, you sometimes have to make big concessions. And these are not always worth it (individually speaking). In the end I think the ED marketing is misleading, but I'd probably jumped into anyway because it's Elite. I just might have not sticked longer. I dunno, pretty much liked it until grindyneers and the advent of the power creep MMO hamsterwheelins.

...To put all that time, energy, and enthusiasm into a project to just watch it bomb - I know I would be disheartened if this were the response to a project I invested time in.

And yet, I can't fully bring myself to feel bad for Frontier. It seems they are just totally out-of-touch with their customers and player base....

I agree on both points, particularly the first point. Although they must be a bit used to things 'bombing'... how is multi-crew faring theses days...

It's such a shame as ED has so much to really be impressed by and to recommend it... yet... it's somehow missing being a truly fun game to play. Rewarding yes, but too worthy, too po-faced, and lacking that sparkle of humour, even silliness, and dare I say joy. Does anyone remember the planet biographies from Elite 1984? They were irreverent, funny, light and a great foil to the 'seriousness'.

NMS has fun in spades, and they bypass sombre 'reality' and just make playing the game a absolute hoot. (Dreadful flight model not withstanding) So, please FDev - take a silly pill and ignore the forum masochists, as at the moment I'm faintly dreading the 'new era'.

Well, we asked for fleet carriers...

You may have. I certainly didn't.

Instead I really think 'Personal Carriers' would have been much more welcome. Smaller in size, PCs could hold (let's say) three of the owner's ships, have standard upkeep costs, and just be a cool way for individuals to tool around the galaxy. No special services, no guests welcome.

I can see why they opted not to have Wing Carriers though. Who wants a flying WC?

I personally don't want ED to turn into a "silly" game like NMS. After all, we already have NMS, Rebel Galaxy Outlaws, Outer worlds, etc. Adding smiles to the holome screen would be nice, but too much "humor" would ruin ED. Just look at the stupid NPC names and their ridiculous text comms.

For me, ED is boring (not always, but often enough) because it is half-baked and broken, not because it lacks hopping pineapples.

Actually i think the person to feel sorry for is...

Stephen Bonetti.

He who came into a new job right at the tail end of this "project" and got told to present it to the masses.

"Here stephen, take this ball of dung, and sell it baby, sell it!"

"ermmm.... thats massive...."

Poor chap.
His name is Stephen Benitoite.

It possibly also may be Benedetti.

Every cost is orders of magnitude too high and will continue to bankrupt you the longer you keep it. Fun times.
This doesn't just show a disconnect with the community,it shows a disconnect with reality!
