Carrier upkeep

don't buy a carrier if you cannot afford one :)
Sure, if there is no other way. But we sure will try to persuade FD to make carriers useful to a wider circle.

Interestingly, FD cut the upkeep for the extras instead of the core modules. I'd rather have it the other way around so a stripped-down carrier could exist out there for a much longer time without selling explo data. Those who want an all-in carrier should pay the extra price.

A big problem with the upkeep mechanic is that it isn't going to work.

Most people who buy one will bank enough credits to make sure they don't have to worry about upkeep. Maybe they'll bank a few months at first but then they'll keep padding it. I'm guessing that most FCs will have years of upkeep set aside before their commanders go inactive.

So we'll still have the game cluttered with just about every FC anyone ever bought, for years to come.

If nothing else that shows why they should come up with a better way of clearing inactive ships. If your ship got mothballed when you went inactive for a few months most commanders would be fine with letting that happen, but by making it punitive FD is incentivizing players to make sure their FCs are never cleared.

If you can make 5 billions to buy a FC, you can afford the upkeep.
That rather depends on how you play, doesn't it? I made the bulk of my 10.5 billion from hauling and other activities over the course of my game to date (wasted a billion or so transporting my ships to Colonia and back, out of sheer boredom). Did a bit of Void Opal mining when the new mining was introduced, but the bulk was already made. I've been longing for a new feature to give me a reason to log in regularly again, but that doesn't mean that I'm happy to be forced to play on a weekly basis and engage in activities that I wouldn't otherwise for the honour of owning a FC. Can I afford one? Yes. Can I afford or am I willing to meet the real-world/real-time demands that it would make on my time? Possibly not. It may be manageable with the new pricing, but the whole concept rubs me up the wrong way.

If you can grind 5 billions, you might as well grind for extra 2.2 billion and have 2 years of upkeep already in your bank. With the money you own you could probably afford a FC till the game dies.

I didn't grind my 10 billion though, that was my point - I made it over the course of 2500 hrs or so from various activities. You may be correct about how far my balance will go - I haven't studied the new costs, but I still have an issue with the concept of upkeep in principle.

What makes you think they wont nerf mining? The double and triple hotspots are gone in the beta.

I didn't say the cost is fair. I said that if you can afford 5 bils you can afford the upkeep. I have 2.7 bil in assets with ~1400 hrs of play time. I will never buy a FC because I will never afford 5 billions. If I could, upkeep would be nothing compared to it.

Upkeep is an abusive mechanic that imprisons the player, who chooses to purchase a FC, in a weekly loop of negative reinforcement and fear based manipulation. If we want to encourage players to logon each week then we need to start from an equal point and provide positive reinforcement where players can optionally receive a buff of some sort because they have chosen to spend my time in game.

If I am not able to play, due to things in my personal life, whether they be sickness, work or family related, then I should not be threatened by abusive game mechanics that seek to punish me for things that may be outside of my personal control. Is this the sort of game that I will want to return to?

Telling me that I can choose not to buy one if I don't like it is like saying "I made this cake for you and here I'll just put this down in front of you, and boy doesn't it look nice. I know you've been waiting for a very long time for something nice to eat. Just imagine how good it must taste. However you don't have to eat it, you can just look at all the other people eating their own cakes I made for them."

Well no. It's more like saying 'I made this cake. It's not for you. It's probably best that you don't try it because you won't like it.'

Also 'abusive' and 'imprisons' ? Really? Oh my.

I have to ask, do you ever feel embarassed when posting stuff like that? Me, I'd be eating my own hands about now.
