Newcomer / Intro Crystalline Shards

I found a post about getting raw materials from Crystalline Shards. It says to go to HIP 36601. But Inara doesnt have such a system? I also need to find a close raw material trader but cant because there is no HIP 36601 in Inara?

HIP 36601 C 1 D Biological [3] Ruthenium
HIP 36601 C 1 A Biological [2][3] Polonium.
HIP 36601 C 3 B Biological [10] Tellurium.
HIP 36601 C 5 A Biological [10 [6] Technetium.
Outotz LS-K D8-3 B 5 C Biological [1] Antimony. Only site #1 and #3 are located on the flat ground. All the rest are up crevasse walls.
Outotz LS-K D8-3 B 5 A Biological [19] Yttrium.

Then go to any raw trader in the bubble

Thanks. What are the figures in brackets?

Do I fill my bins with these materials in HIp 36601 and then go to a raw material trader back in the bubble and trade for lower grade items until I have used up all my higher grade stuff and then go back to fill up with higher grade stuff so all my bins are full? Obviously that is a lot of traveling.

That's the easiest way to fill up with mats, you will also find lower grade mats at the same site so if you want a bit of practice driving around, shooting and collecting mats you can gather those as well, but it's really easiest to just fill up with high grade and trade down.

Basically yes, but you can pick up some of the lower grade stuff while out there by visiting Geo sites as well.
The Geo sites can be even more precipitous than the Bio sites so drive carefully.

I would check which of the high grade materials you are unlikely to need for engineering and use those for the bulk of the trading that way you won’t have to visit too often.

When at the Bio sites be prepared for issues with the smoothness of the game due to how much stuff is there, I tend to switch to solo as if any one else shows up nearby my frame rate drops to single figures.

Being quite far out of the Bubble, most raw materials are more or less the same distance away - back in the Bubble.

Note that there is no shard site with selenium. If you want to completely fill up on all raw materials in this fashion, you will essentially need four full trips. Filling up all lower grade materials by down-trading is possible from a full bin of grade 4 as it requires 106 units of the G4 to do this. Thus, the four trips required if you want to fill all raw materials in this fashion will be:
1. Fill all the grade 4 materials and trade down for the grade 1-3 materials in the same categories. Everything that is left you can cross trade for the grade 1-3 materials in category 4 (iron, zinc, tin).
2. Fill everything up and cross trade to category 4 grades 1-3. Spend any remainder on cross trading for selenium.
3. If necessary, fill everything up and cross trade for selenium.
4. Fill all remaining grade 4 bins.
You may get away with only 3 trips depending on how full your material bins are at the moment as you may fill up your category 4 materials (including selenium) in step 2 and then you can skip step 3. Do not forget to down trade all of your grade 4 materials before going to the shard sites in step 1 as this will allow you to harvest more materials once you get there.

how do I find out about material grades and categories?
This is your current material inventory: https://inara.cz/cmdr-cargo/229615/
If you go down to the inventory, you can select "Components by type". This will sort all of the materials into their different categories, showing a structure similar to that you would see at the material trader. Each row corresponds to a different category and each column is the different grades (or rarities). For example, in raw material category #1 you currently have 300 of the grade 1 (carbon), 12 of the grade 2 (vanadium), 6 of the grade 3 (niobium), and 0 of the grade 4 (yttrium).

There's a table in the link that shows you the different grades and categories

When I get there how do I use my composition scanner to reveal materials? Do I have to log on/off to get the full 150 capacity rather than 100?

All Crystaline Shards have growth with the same material, the highest level material on that body, vulcanism associated with the Shards will have a variety of lower level materials, so leave the volcanic deposits if you just want the highest stuff. You shouldn't need to log on or off at all, you will get a message that storage is full once you reach the max for that mat.

At mat traders you can trade cross category at a lower rate.

You shoot at them to fall to the ground so you can scoop them up. They should be more than enough materials at each site to fill your hold without relogging

So do I have to down trade from each grade 4 to 1-3 in the same category? Why?

You don't have to, no. But the conversion rate is better if you trade in the same category
