Newcomer / Intro Crystalline Shards

You shouldn't need to log on or off at all, you will get a message that storage is full once you reach the max for that mat.
I thought I read somewhere that there is a bug (as of this month) and it initially gives you 100 capacity of a newly discovered material so you log on/off and it goes up to 150?

More annoying for me was the bug i had on my alt: think 4 out of those 6 materials were first discoveries on the Crystalline Shards bodies.
And first discovery for a top tier raw material will give you a bin of 100 maxim (bug). You have to relog to get the normal 150 bin capacity.
I had to get back to the first Planed to fill up from 100 to 150 when i did my first trip there on alt account
This was it. I have lots of undiscovered at the moment.

why these materials? whats so special about category 4?
Grade 4 raw materials are worth more than lower grade raw materials (manufactured and data go up to grade 5). They are generally used for higher grade synthesis/engineering. When you trade materials at a material trader, you will get 3 units when down-trading one category, i.e., 1 unit of yttrium will give you 3 units of niobium. When you up-trade (generally avoid this except in some particular circumstances) you give 6 units of the lower grade for 1 unit of the higher grade, i.e., you could trade 6 niobium for one yttrium.

Cross-trading (trading between categories) always adds a factor of 6 to the cost.

Category 4 is special because the grade 4 in that category is selenium. There is no shard site for selenium. You either have to cross-trade for it or surface prospect it in the "normal" way.

One mat at cat 4 will give you, I think, 1024 mats of the lowest grade, so trading high to low will fill your mat needs quickly, trading low to high will take forever.
Since every down trade gives you a factor of three, trading in one grade 4 will give you 3*3*3 = 27 grade 1s. 150 grade 4 would give you 150*27 = 4050 grade 1 (although that obviously does not fit in the bin).

Is this official or have we just not found a selenium site yet?

Selenium is never the highest mat on the planet for some reason, so no we have found no Selenium yet, it may be that selenium is always associated with a certain higher level mat.

Ah thanks, I knew I was going wrong somewhere. trading up is worse though right? 6 for one grade higher.

Do you mean grade 4 not cat 4?

Yes I did, sorry.

The game has four drop categories. If you go to a geological site at whatever planet, they will drop from pieceous cobbles, crystalline fragments, crystalline clusters, needle crystals, respectively. Unlike all other grade 4 raw materials, selenium is in the second category (which drops from crystalline fragments). When you look at the materials a planet has in EDDB, these different drop categories are shown in different colors. Selenium can exist on a planet with any of the other grade 4 raw materials (which all drop from needle crystals).

Just to explain:

Originally there were 5 grades of raw materials (as there are for data and manufactured), then 3 new elements were introduced (mined from asteroids) and F D reworked the raw materials tables so that there are now only 4 grades.

There is a graphics bug that some g4 still show with 5 "ticks" as if they were g5, just ignore that. Similarly sometimes you will find the bug you mention where an ex-g5 element seems to still have its 100 item limit - this clears on relogging.

P.S. I did the crystalline shards things once and found it incredibly boring. I prefer to pick stuff as I go along, bolstered by using the Bug Killer to fill up with raw whilst farming AEC and AEA data.

I also do as I travel, if I come across a crystaline shard site and it has materials I'm not full on I harvest until I am for that mat, never takes long, but since I am usually 10k+ly away from the nearest mat trader they never get traded until I visit one of the bubbles anyway. The other thing that removes the boring is that I don't actually need the full set of mats, just mats for Jumponium and SRV refuel, there's a lot of mats I am full of and never use so they act as a store for when I do visit a mat trader.

You're on Inara. If you have it linked through something like EDMC it should already know where you are.

Use the Find Nearest Material Trader button upper right

Inara will not let me set HIP 36601 as my location. I know how to find nearest material trader but it wont let me set HIP 36601 so it wont find them for me.

Click the button I mentioned then type or paste your current system in to the box labeled "Search Near Star System"

I just tried pasting in your system and it didn't work, just defaulted to my most recent docking, way back in Colonia. Doesn't EDMC tell Inara where you are? Inara should already know. Inara knows everything.

Yes Ive tried that 100 times. It will not let me set HIP 36601 as the nearest or even my current location. It defaults back to robigo. It shows as hip 36601 in my log.
